Gary & Sue Ellen

Something interesting occured to me while reading this thread:

I didn't like how Gary was presented. He had evolved over the course of KL so much, that his portrayal here seemed to have no knowledge of that. The Gary from the middle to end of KL would have steered clear of codependent Sue Ellen, not out of lack of compassion, but more for self-protection.

The Gary we saw on DallasTNT was not the same Gary from the middle to the end of Knots Landing. Remember, it was in KL season 7 that Bobby died. And from then to season 14, and the reunion movie, everything we saw was taking place in the timeline in which Bobby was dead.

But DallasTNT is, obviously, in the timeline in which Bobby's death was just a dream. So this Gary experienced the events of Knots Landing seasons 1-6, where last we saw of him he was still married to Abby, and Val was married to Ben Gibson, and still trying to get her twins, whom she'd only just recently discovered were still alive (and whom Gary had no idea were his), back. We have no idea what happened to Gary after that, just that at some point before 2012 he and Val reconciled. But a lot a stuff obviously happened in between that, that remains unknown.

Interesting point. Dallas delved into science fiction in a way. This was a different universe. Maybe the Schrodinger's Cat hypothesis could be applied in some manner. Two Gary's existed simultaneously for those who didn't see the Dallas episode where Pam opens that shower door. Oh, wait, it must be that two Bobbys existed simultaneously for those who didn't see that episode.....? Dallas used to explain quantum physics? Oh, Pam, maybe you should have just closed the shower door and gone back to sleep.

Like with Marvel and DC Comics, there is a Dallas "Multiverse" of parallel realities and diverging timelines.

Timeline 1: Dallas: The Early Years, Dallas seasons 1-8, Knots Landing seasons 1-14, Knots Landing: Return To The Cul-De-Sac.

Timeline 2: Dallas: The Early Years, Dallas season 1-7 & 9-14, Knots Landing seasons 1-6, Dallas: J.R. Returns, Dallas: War of The Ewings

Timeline 3: Dallas: The Early Years, Dallas season 1-7 & 9-14, Knots Landing seasons 1-6, Dallas TNT.*

*In this timeline there were also more changes, as some of the events in those previously seen series may not have happened, or happened differently than what was seen on the screen, such as the inclusion of Carmen, Elena, and Drew Ramos working and living on Southfork while Pam was there (so pre-season 10 of the original series), the Ewings being completely unaware of the existence of Pamela Rebecca (I thought at least Bobby knew about it), Cliff never getting over his belief that Jock betrayed Digger (and having the means to sponsor a poor child in Islamabad, putting him through school and bringing him to work for him as an adult), the status of Wentworth Industries, etc.

There's also the alternate timeline shown in "Conundrum", which at most includes some of the events of Dallas: The Early Years (except there was no teenage J.R. at the Southfork BBQ in 1951), I presume he was probably a stillbirth, or died shortly after birth, since we know it was that pregnancy which pushed Jock and Miss Ellie to get married in the first place. And that would also explain why Gary, now the eldest son in this timeline, was not named John Ross Jr.

And then we have the "subjective realities" made up by Val on "Knots" ("Capricorn Crude") and Don Lockwood on "Dallas" (the J.R. movie)... plus the gossipy version published by the "Dallas Press" of all the Ewing shenanigans... We might also add the probably juicy (and nonsensical) things that Swellin and Katherine wrote in their unlikely diaries (and Miss Ellie too, if we have to believe the trash perpetrated by the Cider House...). Just to add insult to injury...

Good point. Were there any other diaries that conveniently turned up at just the right moment? I remember Lady Jessica Montford had one where she detailed all her evil actions and future projects of the criminally insane.

Oh yeah, but Jessie´s diary would be a sort of "American Psycho" rip-off...remember her serial murders in the penultimate season...?

Gary LOATHED Sue Ellen in the original Dallas and I don’t see why his viewers would have changed in the TNT version. It was a WTF Cidre moment.....

Where did you get that idea? What was the worst thing Gary said to or about Sue Ellen in original Dallas?

I never got the impression he loathed any of the family although he didn't like JR. Still, he made the effort to visit JR when he'd been shot. As for Sue Ellen I remember Gary specifically taking her aside and trying to help her with her alcoholism. He was offering his support and saying how he understood her well because he was also an alcoholic. That took a lot because Sue Ellen was acting like a bitch then. While Gary was talking to her in the nursery she picked up one of John Ross' toys and purposely dropped it on the floor, breaking it. She wouldn't give John Ross any attention at that time, to the point that they had to hire a woman to take care of him because Sue Ellen didn't want to be bothered. JR wasn't giving John Ross attention at the time either, but that was because he had good reason to believe that John Ross was Cliff's son.

In the Knots Landing episode, Kristin, Gary says of Sue Ellen, “I can’t stand my sister-in-law”. Gary also says that Kristin is using a Sue Ellen manipulation. Four episodes later, in A Family Matter, he referred to JR as “My brother, the goon”. Gary also tried to avoid contact with JR in that episode, until events force him to. In Designs, Gary tells Sid Fairgate that JR has the ethics of a rattlesnake. In A Family Matter and Designs, Gary warns Abby Cunningham and Sid Fairgate of the dangers of dealing with JR. and them coming off worst. In Community Spirit, after spending time with JR, Karen Fairgate says of JR that beneath his Texas charm, he’s not nice”. Gary replies, “You got it!”. Gary also says in that episode, “When JR’s in town, always assume the worst”. When, after the reading of Jock’s Will, JR walks in on Gary and Abby in New Beginnings, Gary is absolutely definitely not pleased to see him and eventually orders him out of the hotel suite. In Reunion, Gary tells Bobby that if it was Jock there, he still would have come but when Bobby asks if he would have come up if JR was there, Gary replies, “What do you think?”. Gary isn’t particularly pleased about Kristin coming to stay at his home and phoned Bobby for information but Bobby forgot to mention to Gary that Kristin had shot JR. In Designs, Gary tells JR that he wasn’t really looking for a dinner invitation from him. Gary says of the prospect of having dinner with JR in A Family Matter, “I don’t think so”, “I don’t think that’s a good idea. Val and I are busy”. When JR turns up at Knots Landing Motors, it’s vice-president (Gary) is annoyed and says, “Abby what the hell did you bring him here for?!” When he first sees JR, Gary is not pleased and his first line is “What are you doing here?” When JR says that he was doing business and couldn’t leave town without visiting his little brother, Gary sarcastically says, “Nice of you”. On the prospect of Gary having to borrow from JR, Gary says “No way”. And “Abby, when my brother wins, everybody else loses. And let me tell you something. You fool around with him long enough, you’re gonna find that out.” And Gary reply to Abby’s suggestion of him meeting with JR is “No”.

“Look Sid, I know my brother. You’d be making a big mistake if you got involved with him. Everybody who has had any dealings with him has come out on the short end of the stick. He’s got the ethics of a rattlesnake. Everything about him is crooked, doubledealing, and corrupt!”
- Gary telling Sid Fairgate about JR. From Knots Landing: Designs

While Gary was talking to her in the nursery she picked up one of John Ross' toys and purposely dropped it on the floor, breaking it.
Incorrect. That didn’t happen with Gary. It happened with Bobby, at the beginning of the previous season. When Bobby tells her that he would never use what she told him about Cliff and the baby.

Then there is that speech that Gary gives Abby and Valene at the end of Power Play. And in season four when Kenny gives Gary that true Ewing speech, likening Gary’s behaviour to other Ewings, which is one of the contributing factors to Gary starting drinking again.

Which was nice of Gary, considering at their last three onscreen meetings before JR’s shooting, JR told Gary that he was going to break him again, if Gary didn’t keep his mouth shut and stay out of JR’s plan to drill on the beach near Gary’s home in Knots Landing. JR also threatened to tell Lucy about her parents getting remarried at a time when she didn’t know about it, unsuccessfully using it as a means to force Gary to not use whatever information he had found in JR’s secret files. JR also told Gary that he had better be afraid for his near and dear and swore to use every ounce of his power to break him. However, Valene and Gary called JR’s bluff on his Lucy threat (pointing out the trouble it would cause Lucy and the way Jock and Ellie might react towards JR) and JR was forced to back down and change his plan. Although he did it in a way that he got himself the cover of Time magazine and he told Gary that he was proud of him and he congratulated him for using dirty tricks and therefore starting to act like a real Ewing. And as soon as he got back to Dallas, JR then tried to get Lucy married to Alan Beam, to make sure that Gary wouldn’t muscle in on his action, as he envisioned Gary and Valene swarming over him and he wanted them out of his hair.
