I could watch "The Searchers" over and over again, as well as many of John Wayne's movies.
On the lighter side, he did guest appearances on one of Lucille Ball's shows and also the Beverly Hillbillies,
as himself.

A iconic actor, always entertaining!

I mean, the book talks more about Leslie Howard and even Elvis as being strong leading men. It feels like the writers deliberately shafted Wayne, who was virtually the biggest box office star in America for probably 15+ years, just because they wanted to.

Like Joan Crawford, John Wayne's onscreen reputation took a big hit because of his offscreen life. It's arguable whether their personal life or political leanings should influence the perception of their work, but that's the reality of what happened to both of them.

I'm watching THE SEARCHERS (1956) as I type for the first time in ages -- it's such a gorgeous-looking picture. Leisurely RIO BRAVO (1958) was on over the weekend, shot in Tucson, and I watched it again. (Director Howard Hawks said Angie used to deliver her lines "like she was trying to get rid of them," so he slowed her down; he later called her "a terrific actress" but that was just before the second season of her '70s cop show permanently ruined her -- or she allowed it to).

I also like TRUE GRIT (1969, the original). He got the Oscar for that one. Co-stars black widow Kim Darby.

I don't think I've ever actually seen STAGECOACH (1939) other than clips.

I was in Monument Valley as a boy. It looks as it does on screen.
