I’m Probably Late, But Was It Explained How Miss Ellie Left Part Ownership Of Southfork To John Ross

It wasn't explained as the show just ignored Clayton except for including "Farlow" on Miss Ellie's tombstone.

Maybe Clayton died before Ellie and his part of Southfork just went back to her? I can't imagine Dusty making a play for it either way.

ETA: somewhere along the way it was revealed that Clayton died in 1999. I think it might've been in their fictional Facebook feed the show had? I don't recall that they said so in the series...

Clayton and Miss Ellie gave it to Bobby in the original - I have to assume in trust other wise they’d have had to drill for oil just to cover the taxes. So, I’d have to guess she changed the beneficiary of the trust to add John Ross - which is maybe why he was in such a hurry to sell it before he “died” - thinking he was going to die. Maybe at that point John Ross becomes sole beneficiary. There’s assumptions that have to made here but they’re reasonable. It’s not reasonable to believe they just gave Bobby what is tens (or more) billions and he didn’t have to drill for oil to pay the enormous gift tax. Of course as it turns out the oil was not part of land any way so he might have been fine, but then once the 3 boys inherited the mineral rights they’d have estate taxes to pay. More complicated then they portray but assumptions certainly make it possible for John Ross to get part of the trust - though it could turn out he has no power as a trustee.

I’m also curious about the voting thing regarding the mineral rights. I’m not a lawyer but I’m familiar with separating mineral rights. I never had a situation where anyone would say no but I don’t think if even the majority voted not to drill they still couldn’t keep my share from me - that just seems absurd. But I could see it written in a trust that way.

Reality: Miss Ellie would have set up a foundation between her and Clayton. She’d have given the land to the foundation to protect it and set up a $1 a year lease to The Southfork Cattle Company. Then she’d have given the mineral rights to the foundation separately with an iron clad restriction from drilling on the hand for it. Or she might have given the mineral rights to her 3 sons and set up a way to drill on it which protected the land. She’d have then given her Cattle Company to Bobby, maybe Gary or maybe both. JR had zero interest in it. Then she’d have given the house to JR just as was her family’s tradition. I’m sure land would have been set aside for other family members to build. Forgetting the mineral rights was lame.
