US media is reporting that the Mandalay Bay hotel in the city has been evacuated.

The Las Vegas metropolitan Police Department confirmed that they are "investigating reports of an active shooter near/around Mandalay Bay Casino".

Local media is reporting that one police officer has been shot and emergency services are at the scene.

At least two people have died and 24 are injured with suspected wounds after a gunman opened fire on a Las Vegas country music festival.

US media is reporting that the Mandalay Bay hotel in the city has been evacuated. Country music artist Jason Aldean was playing a concert at the Route 91 Harvest Festival when gunshots were heard.

Dozens of patrol vehicles descended on the Strip after authorities received reports of an active gunman near the hotel.

Some officers took cover behind their vehicles while others carrying assault rifles ran into the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino

University Medical Centre spokeswoman Danita Cohen said the hospital was taking in "several" people with gunshot wounds. She did not have any other details.

Authorities shut down part of the Las Vegas Strip and Interstate 15.

Some flights destined for McCarran International Airport were diverted due to the incident.

Witnesses heard numerous gunshots at the casino hotel, where police tactical teams were searching for the attacker.

Concert-goers reported seeing muzzle flashes from the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across Las Vegas Boulevard from the country music festival and the sound of what they described as automatic gunfire.

Witnesses said they saw multiple victims as they fled the shots raining down on the concert venue.

Some later huddled in the basement of the nearby Tropicana hotel-casino.

Here are the main points and quotes from Sheriff Lombardo’s press conference:

‘Lone-wolf’ suspect killed

At approximately 10.08pm we had calls coming of multiple shots being fired from the Mandalay Bay hotel towards the Route 91 concert, on the East side of Los Vegas Boulevard.

There was a shooter on 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. Officers engaged the suspect at that location. He is dead. He has been identified. He is a local resident. I will not release his name at this time ...

We are confident that the primary aggressor in this event has expired, or passed away and is no longer a threat.

We do not know what his belief system was at this time. We believe he is the sole aggressor at this point and the scene is static. We are attempting to locate the person of interest.

Right now we believe it is sole actor, a lone wolf type actor and we have the place under control.

Asked if the shooter was part of a militant group, Lombardo said “no”.

At least 20 dead including two police officers

We have well in excess of 100 plus injured and excess of 20 plus that have died.

I have two police officers who are currently at the hospital, one in critical condition and the other minor injuries. There were other police officers, that were off duty, attending the concert that have expired. We don’t have those individuals identified at this point. All’s I know is they are room mates.

Police searching for suspect’s companion

We are interested in a companion that is travelling with him [the suspect]. Her name is Marilou Danley. She is an Asian female, approximately 4ft 11in, weight of 111lbs. We have not located her at this time and we are interested in talking to her for follow up.

Police search for suspect’s vehicles

[There are] two vehicles we are interested in locating. We have Hyundai Tucson [of unknown colour] with Nevada plate 114B40 and a Chrysler Pacifica Touring, [of unknown colour], Nevada plate 19D401. These are the plates registered to the suspect that we located at the Mandalay Bay.

No other shooters are at large

There has been multiple conjecture coming through social media that there is multiple shooters at other resorts. That has been proven to be false. Additionally there has been accusations or beliefs that there is some explosive going off. That is also false. The only explosive contained in this event was our Swot team breaching the room. We are pretty confident that there is no longer a threat other than we are attempting to locate the person of interest.

Plea for video evidence

Anybody that may have cell phone video or any type of video that would be of benefit to the investigation, please respond to the LVPD HQ and we will take custody of that video.

This is horrific!

50 dead at the hands of one man

Las Vegas shooting: Gunman Stephen Paddock kills 50 people

At least 50 people have been killed and another 406 have been wounded in a mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert.

A gunman, named as 64-year-old local resident Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel towards an open-air music festival attended by 22,000.

He was found dead after officers stormed the room where a number of guns were found.

The attack is the worst mass shooting in recent US history.

US President Donald Trump tweeted his "warmest condolences and sympathies" to the victims and their families, and called the shooting "terrible".

Sheriff Joe Lombardo described the shooting as a "lone wolf" attack. He said there was no information about Paddock's motives.

"We have no idea what his belief system was," he said.

He added that police were now confident they had located a woman, earlier named as Marilou Danley, who was thought to have been travelling with the gunman before the attack.

Sheriff Lombardo said he was unable to give accurate details of dead and wounded, but confirmed two off-duty police officers were among those killed.

Early this morning when I read the news, there were 2 reported dead and 24 injured. Bad enough.
When I checked the news again around lunch time, it was 50 dead and 400 injured. My eyes were as big as they can possibly get.

Either this man suffered from a severe psychological illness or he was purely evil. To lack that much empathy for others, much like a jihadist...

Police have identified Stephen Paddock as the gunman who opened fire on concertgoers from a hotel room in Las Vegas, killing at least 58 people and leaving 515 wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Paddock, 64, began shooting from the window of his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino just after 10 p.m. local time Sunday evening, police said. A SWAT team found Paddock dead in his hotel room and suspect he killed himself.

Police said Paddock had "at least 10 rifles" in the room. He had been staying in the room since Sept. 28 and was traveling with a female companion believed to be his wife named Marilou Danley. Police said they had spoken to Danley, who was overseas at the time of the shooting and is not believed to be involved.

Paddock had been living in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, about 75 miles northeast of Las Vegas, according to the Mesquite Police Department. He had no criminal record beyond a routine citation several years ago that was handled in court.

Eric Paddock, the gunman's brother, spoke to reporters outside his home Monday morning. Eric Paddock said he is "horrified" and "dumbfounded" by his brother's actions. "No religious affiliation. No political affiliation. He just hung out," Eric Paddock said

Investigators are still trying to determine Paddock's motive. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the shooting, but offered no proof. U.S. officials tell CBS News there are no signs that Paddock had ties to radical Islamic groups or showed signs of being radicalized.

Hard to think that a simple security check at check in could have prevented this. When I was staying at a Disney resort last year, we had to go through airport type security before we could enter the hotel.

They can easily check in, but what about when they come and go?

He probably took the guns to his room over a few days.

Our news is reporting that there is no limit on how many guns people can own in Nevada and they don’t have to register them.

Truly horrendous, it simply beggars belief as to whatever drove this individual to do this.

I think USA will have issues like this til the end of time
or until they do something about their constitution and ammend the right to bear arms

We have come a long way since 1776! But the NRA dont support that or the gun lobby so mass shootings will continue ad everyone will say how dreadful, it cantr happen again

it will!

Lone-wolf’ suspect killed

If the shooter was Muslim, everyone would be calling this atrocity a terrorist attack. Trump would be tweeting some Islamophobic bile to whip up hatred against Muslims. However, because the murders were committed by a 64-year-old white American male it's a "lone wolf" attack and no one is suggesting limiting the freedoms of aging white men.

the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history
Someone, somewhere, sometime is going to try to top that. Because every killer wants to be the deadliest killer.

And no, this has nothing to do with being ill. Pure evil exists, evil creatures disguised as humans. They should not have human rights.
I'm not against death penalty, but human bodies (and especially the organs) are precious. There are better ways to benefit from that.
Or use them as lab rats.
