Marni Nixon was the first ghost singer to receive substantial press coverage. She became well-known for providing vocals for famous actresses in a string of successful musical films in the 1950s and 1960s.
She dubbed Marilyn Monroe's high notes for the "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" number in GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953), sang for Deborah Kerr in THE KING AND I (1956) and AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957), and dubbed for Natalie Wood in WEST SIDE STORY (1961). Perhaps her most famous -- and well-publicized -- assignment came in 1964 when she dubbed for Audrey Hepburn in MY FAIR LADY. Outside of her work dubbing for actresses, Nixon occasionally appeared in film, television, and the theatre. In 1954, she headlined THE GIRL IN PINK TIGHTS on Broadway, and she later had small roles in movies like THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965).
I watched the video Be Kind Rewind did on the 1965 Oscars this morning. That was the year Julie Andrews won for MARY POPPINS, and when the controversy arose surrounding Audrey Hepburn's casting in MY FAIR LADY, a role Andrews had originated on the stage.
