Fantastic. Now we're totally up the river without a paddle!

Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire has resigned from government, the Northern Ireland Office has confirmed.

It's understood he requires surgery soon for a lung condition.

Mr Brokenshire took the role in July 2016, replacing Theresa Villiers.

More to follow.

I'm sorry he's not well but he clearly wasn't up to the job. Northern Ireland has been without a government for months and he has made next to no difference in making any progress in resolving the issue. He should have been sacked long ago.

Somewhat ironic that he resigns, legitimately enough on the grounds of health concerns, and yet a Sinn Fein MP refuses to go after mocking victims of one of the IRA's worst atrocities at Kingsmills.

Doesn't add up somehow.
