But that's the problem, you can't plan
Shall we make a list of all planned soap events that could not have been planned?:D
and you can't plan that you're not gonna die or have brain damage or organ failure or something as a result of your overdose
Actually, Sue Ellen pointed out that she was willing to risk her life just for the sake of revenge.
This indicates that, according to Pamela herself, it was a cold and calculated plan, BUT maybe there was more emotion behind it then she realized, or wanted to realize.
And what was it even supposed to achieve?
She told John Ross in the hospital.
And it worked.

Actually, Sue Ellen pointed out that she was willing to risk her life just for the sake of revenge.
This indicates that

.......she's an idiot?

And think of all the real-life suicide attempts, people who want to be found, but not really die. A statement, or getting attention.

Yes, it might work as a cry for help, but as a revenge tactic on your cheating husband? Not so much. Sure it might make them feel bad, but it just makes you look a bit pitiful and pathetic.

A soapy character?

...the next time he'd think about screwing that slut, Emma. An image, forever connected with panic and vomit.

Well, wasn´t Emma Bell´s next role an appearance on "American Horror Story: Roanoke" (panic and vomit!)? Poetic justice? ;)

Her role was way too short and I can only describe that as "injustice".
I hope they keep her and give her more to do in other AHS series, better still, give her the spin-off show DALLAS II - The Rylands

I'm so glad I've "discovered" this actress, thanks to TNT Dallas.

So, I'm currently in the middle of season 2 (it's my first re-watch of the TNT series) and I really dislike Pamela. It's weird because when the series aired, I liked her and stuck with her the whole way (even, in spite of her nasty remark to Sue Ellen before the Southfork fire) - but this time around, I have zero sympathy for her.

I just re-watched the episode where Frank 'confessed' to Tommy and Becky's murder in court and Pamela seems to have no remorse. I actually felt sorry for Frank, who had apparently devoted his adulthood to Cliff, only to be undermined by his spoilt little brat.

Maybe my opinion will switch back but circa season 2, episode 4, I am not a fan. :mo:

I agree. I wish CC or someone from her writer's team would have read the Suzy Kalter book "The Complete Book of Dallas - Behind the scenes at the world's favorite television show" published in 1986. In it they perfectly explain and analyze the ingredients of what made Dallas into the phenomenon it was. It breaks down which elements a soap needs and yes plot twists is a part of it but so is the payoff and reality and coincidence. The stories needs to stay grounded and make people believe they could actually happen. A successful soap opera is not a crime drama. At least not in the 1980's and that's when Dallas was at it's peak. So the audience who tuned in to watch the new Dallas expected it to stay true to the show they loved. The book ends on a closing remark from David Jacobs "Dallas is just plain fun".

I think that sums it all up perfectly and the new writer's team could have learnt something from reading a book like this one!

Very interesting book. I have three copies !

I really disliked her, but what stands out to me is the glaring stupidity of the writers. We're expected to believe that Cliff is now this huge Godfather like character and yet no one knows what his daughter looks like....absolutely bloody ridiculous.

I do realise that's not a popular opinion but what made Pamela Rebecca so nasty?

Childhood abandonment issues. As she later said herself to John Ross, she had been initially raised without her father, and when she finally connected with him she was so desperate to please him and make him proud of her that she was willing to go along with his schemes for revenge.

That's not entirely implausible. I've known many folks who've done effed up things for the love of their parents.

Of course, the question as to why Cliff was still so hell-bent on revenge at that point in his life was never explained.

Also I wish they would have explored more of her troubled relationship with her parents. A Barnes centered episode would have been good. But it's yet another missed opportunity. :(

Agreed, it was totally wasted when they brought Afton in when Pam was in the hospital after the explosion. That was the time to have Cliff, Afton, and Pam together and fill in some background of how they all got to where they were.

I could have easily lived with the pairing of John Ross and Pamela Rebecca from the get go. I think I alluded to this in another thread that John Ross and Pamela Rebecca met up Europe, fell deeply in love and quietly married. The opening scene to TNT Dallas is John Ross and Pamela Rebecca driving in their red convertible towards the great city. Pamela Rebecca is nervous about her acceptance as the newest Mrs. Ewing. John Ross responds that everything will be fine, except he is now wondering if secretly inviting the extended family to Southfork was such a good idea. JR, Sue Ellen, Bobby, Ann and Christopher are enjoying pre-dinner drinks (except Sue Ellen). JR is up to his usual pre-dinner banter when in walks Cliff Barnes and Afton. To the surprise of many everyone is friendly...then in walks John Ross and his bride Pamela Rebecca....the fuse is lit...the fox is in the hen house...let the games begin.

This would have been friggin' AWESOME!

I thought it was a bit lame to have John Ross cheat on Rebecca that early on in their relationship. Felt a bit like a "look he's as bad as JR!!!!" moment.

Yep, that's exactly what it was, and it was lazy writing. It was just meant to be a "shocking" moment that we didn't see coming, which can be good when done right, but you should be able to look back and see the hints after the revelation. That wasn't the case. There was nothing in the previous episodes leading up to that which suggested that John Ross would cheat on Pamela, everything indicated that he was genuinly falling in love with her. Remember the hurt he felt when he first told her about Cliff causing the explosion and she didn't believe him and thought he'd just been faking his feelings for her? Sure, he'd had the brief fling with Emma but that was in the aftermath of his father's death, when he was feeling down. Once that was over, he wasn't showing any further interest in her, even rejecting her in the hospital when he was worried about Pamela. So it just came out of nowhere and seemed to be done because the writers thought "J.R.'s dead, so John Ross has to completely become the new J.R. now, and that means that he has to cheat on his wife."

While I agree that the vomit plan was stupid, I must say that this is a very good point.

And think of all the real-life suicide attempts, people who want to be found, but not really die. A statement, or getting attention.

And that is also a really good point. And there are probably many actual suicides that were meant to just be ways to get attention but didn't work out like the person planned...
