I might sound uncharitable but I'll be looking at the headlines of the Sunday tabloids tomorrow to see which paper was going to out him which forced him to come out now. I still don't believe he came out now just because he was dealing with an inner turmoil but because someone had gone to the Press with a story that would have outed him. The more I think about it the more I conclude the timing is odd. Tomorrow he has to present Dancing On Ice and next week he is scheduled to present This Morning. Had he chosen the time voluntarily, surely it would have been better to wait for a time when he wasn't due to be on TV so often. That would have allowed interest in the story to die down a bit and not be a distraction from his work while also enabling him to gauge how the public have reacted to the news.

I'm not sure about his hand being forced. This Morning is often on when I am at work and so I would catch bits and pieces here and there. A few times I had noticed how thin and frail Philip was and now that I look at more clips recently he just looks shattered, even though he's smiling and laughing on camera. He looked unwell, so maybe he's just been struggling with this too long.
There seems to be from what I can see a lot of positivity from the general public about it which is nice. I'm sure it's been shattering for the whole family but I feel like it's been discussed long before this public disclosure.

He would never have got the gig on This Morning as an out gay male. They loved the whole married couple vibe. He was sold as the housewives fav, so he was probably also worried about his career.

I'm sure behind the scenes everyone knew, so it's interesting the media kept it under wraps.

I really don't think behind the scenes everyone knew. If that was the case then it would have leaked, there would have been rumours. It's been a secret he has kept all this time, his whole life. I think also back when he was a children's presenter and in musical theatre as Joseph it would have been the end of his career if he came out in the early 1990s. Then it just gets harder and harder and you have to keep lying. As he went into more presenting work and higher profile shows it just couldn't have been done. At 57 now, he has achieved everything he could have in his career and has nothing left to lose. If he was to have been sacked by This Morning now it wouldn't have been the end of the world for him. Of course they couldn't do that now, not for him coming out. But not so long ago it would have been as simple as not renewing his contract.

I'd certainly heard rumours many years ago when I worked in the world of west end theatres so the announcement didn't come as a huge suprise.

Coming out is very difficult though - when I came out I left a note for my mum saying I needed to speak to her that evening, I then came out (lots of tears) and she was just thankful that I wasn't on drugs. However, being the mid 80's she had big health concerns about it, as did the rest of the family. Thankfully it all went very well and didn't cause any issues at all.

Having done it though, and knowing how painful it can be and feel I now feel very differently about it. As much as I worried I had many years of coming to terms with it before telling anyone - but my family had no warning, they were just faced with it head on.

It's not just about telling people you're gay - you personally feel that you have let them down, that you're not normal, that your abnormality will impact on their lives and their friends - it's a terrible feeling of absolute despair and anxiety - and that's why it's so tough and so worrying to tell people.

And that's where I really feel for Phillip's family. After 27 years of marriage (very happily by all accounts) my heart just goes out to them because their world has collapsed and will never be the same again.

Yes they are being loving and supportive and I admire that hugely, but I can't help feeling that his wife is "having" to be positive about it because what are her other options?

I sincerely hope they can genuinely stay happy and live their lives to full without recriminations or any problems in the future.

As far as why he came out, I too have a feeling his hand was forced but we'll never know for certain.

PS: Just to add - I read somewhere recently about coming out - no matter what LGBTQ+ you are, you are always coming out, throughout your life, new friends, new family, new work collegues etc etc etc, it's a never ending cycle that does get very tiresome.

Hopefully the day when no one gives a damn gets nearer for us all.

I wish Phillip and his family all the very best.

Seeing those two together reminds me of this Spitting Image song which turned out to be prophetic regarding Mr Schofield.

I heard that Philip Schofield has a super-injunction in place preventing the media from publishing details of an alleged relationship with a young runner on This Morning. I don't know if that's true but it would explain why Good Morning Britain had to shut down what Joan and Perez Hilton were hinting at during that interview.

Oh, I knew all the time. She is burned into my memory forever. She did a movie with some moustachioed chap called Steven Kanaly, whose name vaguely rings a bell and which I’m never going to admit that I’ve seen. And if you dare suggest I have, I will personally sue.

I was in on Friday and happened to see Phillip Schofield’s (with two “l’s”)announcement live. I remember being a little unsettled by Eamonn Holmes’ joke. When I flicked over, they were talking about it on the BBC too on BBC2.

I once got to murder one of his characters. Although sadly Paul Scofield wasn’t playing him at the time. It was the next best thing. I was chuffed.

Joan Collins and some other celebs were on GMB and she said it was odd he came out as they had all known for years as he was out to them.


Gotta love Joan's sensitivity :giggle:

It's surprising the press didn't out him years ago. There are others as well, handy to know people who work in PR as you get all the goss over a glass or 4 of wine.

Whereas others, like sports men, seem to be forced to speak out.

Maybe it comes down to big corporations 'proecting' them for their own benefit.

It kind of makes me glad that he mostly supported by viewers and the general public. Forcing someone out like that is vile. He managed to keep his job and save face. I mean it was his life and between him and his family.
