Richard was a tragic character in that he didn't realize he did have the dream. He had a cool wife, a good job, and beautiful home, and a kid but didn't realize how good he had it until he lost it. He had it twice in fact with the restaurant. He could have worked fine in the middle years, upscale him into a lawyer, and make him part of Empire Valley hijinks.

The new Laura was more suited to Greg Sumner. Richard was more her past. Richard just couldn't cope with Laura, as his wife, being such a breadwinner and so confident in herself.
YEah, he was definitely a sexist pig like that. I wonder if the same writer wrote for Ray Krebbs and his insecurity with wife Donna.

Good point. Cliff and Richard are very much alike. THEY can't be happy in the moment, always looking on the other guys plate wanting some. Egos raging. When they do find some sort of peace, they blow it. Marginalize their women and come off looking like a cad.... yet you root for their sorry asses.
Cliff was more of an egotistical fool. Richard was just insecure. He was jealous of Sid for having it all, including Karen. And definitely jealous and envious of Gary's wealth; offended by his self righteous notion of rebuking it....
