Actor Sir Roger Moore, best known for playing James Bond, has died aged 89, his family has announced.

He played the famous spy in seven Bond films including Live and Let Die and the Spy Who Loved Me.

This has reminded me I have the entire series of The Persuaders in a cupboard upstairs just waiting for me to discover it.

I loved his deadpan, throwaway style of delivery.

I was only watching him in The Man with the Golden gun this Sunday.

That must have been during filming of The Spy Who Loved Me.

Couldn't believe the news today, obviously it has been overshadowed by the awful events in Manchester.

Sir Roger was an absolute legend and over and above an outstanding acting career, his wonderful work for UNICEF has further demonstrated just how much of a national treasure he was.

May he rest in peace.

Sad news. He was one of the three of my favorite James Bond, was a very handsome man. RIP!!!

When I read he’d died, I felt sucker-punched. He was a large part of my growing up years, and I feel his loss.

When I was around 7 or 8 I stumbled upon a huge cache of books my da had tied up in stacks in a storeroom. I devoured as many as I could remotely comprehend. The Saint books by Leslie Charteris soon became my favourite. I have fond memories of an early photograph of me clutching a Saint book during the time when Simon Templar aka the Saint was my 'hero'. So naturally, when I found out that a TV series had been made out of his adventures, I had to watch it; and that was my introduction to plain ole Roger Moore. (And, later, to Ian Ogilvy.) I then caught up with Mr Moore’s TV career by way of Ivanhoe & The Alaskans. Yet, it’s in the Persuaders where I remember Sir Roger more fondly, and that's the series I enjoyed him in most. His Bond I didn’t much care for. (My Bonds need to be edgy/moody: Sean, Tim & Daniel.) Someone described Sir Roger as “quiet and self-deprecating”. That’s about right, in his later life. R.I.P, sir. Thanks for the memories.

Actually, his step-daughter, Helena Christina “Flossie” Knudsen; daughter of his widow, Kristina “Kiki” Tholstrup by her first husband, Hans Christian Knudsen, who committed suicide. Flossie died last July. Reportedly, she’d had a failed marriage, a failed relationship of several years & a failed business. I won’t be surprised if emotional stress and trauma set the stage for cancer to develop. ....Kiki herself had breast cancer. Her second hubby was Ole Tholstrup. He died of alcoholism. ....Sir Roger’s second wife, Dorothy Squires, died of cancer too, some 3 decades after they split. When they were together, she had a number of miscarriages. When she fell ill in later life, he was there for her, visiting & paying for her treatment. This despite their’s having been a very bitter & very acrimonious spilt. ….By some accounts, Sir Roger’s divorce from 3rd wife Luisa Mattioli Moore, the mother of his 3 biological children, was almost as acrimonious. Kiki had once been Luisa’s close friend, and Luisa (then married to Sir Roger) had nursed her when Kiki had her cancer. Then Sir Roger was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He and Kiki grew closer. Sir Roger told his wife that Kiki was his true soul mate. I hope Luisa Moore, now 81, is well and stays well and does not go down the cancer route.

I remember watching him in Ivanhoe but whether that was before The Saint or in reruns after I'm not sure. Then The Persuaders and onto James Bond. A true gentleman who never took himself too seriously.

Ivanhoe was in the late 1950s, before he did The Alaskans and Maverick. The Saint was filmed between 1962 until towards the end of 1968. Roger Moore directed some episodes of The Saint. The week after production was completed on The Saint, he started filming Crossplot at the same studios. He did the movie The Man Who Haunted Himself afterwards in the period before he did The Persuaders!.

Roger will always be my James Bond as I was a child of the 80's.

My favourite out of all the actors to play 007.

Rest In Peace Sir.

Here he is in a lovely picture with fellow Bond actor Richard Kiel as Jaws, who looks as if he's finally got the better of 007. Of course we know better don't we, as Jaws turned good at the end of Moonraker.

A soundstage named after the late Sir Roger Moore has been opened by the Countess of Wessex at Pinewood Studios.

Dame Joan Collins, Sir Michael Caine and Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were among the attendees at Sunday's private event.

Lady Moore and the star's three children paid an emotional tribute, saying how proud Sir Roger would be.

Sir Roger, who played secret agent James Bond in seven films, died from cancer in May at the age of 89.

It would have been his 90th birthday on Saturday.

Sir Roger acted in more than 40 productions at Pinewood in Buckinghamshire and also had an office there.
