The 1970’s

The seventies was a decade of change. The women’s movement was gaining strength and it became more common for women to go back to the work force instead of being housewives. Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister in the UK while Isabel Peron became the first female president in the world. Other prominent world leaders this decade included: Richard Nixon, Fidel Castro, Mao Zedong, Gerald Ford, Anwar Sedat and Indira Gandhi.

The Vietnam War came to an end when the USA withdrew their troops. The Watergate scandal occurred. Violence increased in the Middle East. There was an oil crisis in the Western world. Disco was at its height of popularity. ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest and was touring their world while producing new records. On TV shows like Little House On The Prairie, The Waltons, M.A.S.H, The Brady Bunch and All In The Family dominated the TV landscape before Dallas first graced our screens in 1978.

I thought the year was so you understood which movie was voted on and you only needed the year where a film had a remake or had the same title.

Oops, it's probably not important but Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) was released in 1979 not 1972.

Okay so we have a result. It's the second time this movie wins a category as it's also won best musical. Your favorite movie from the 1970's is:

Grease (1978)
This movie brings you back to Rydell High in the late 1950s. We get to follow the new Australian girl named Sandy as she is transferred to America just in time for Senior Year. At the school she meets Danny, a guy who she has had a summer fling with. The only problem is that Danny is totally different when he hangs with his cool guy group "The T-Birds", who are into car-racing and chicks. Sandy also has trouble fitting in with the cool girls at school who calls themselves "The Pink Ladies" as their leader Rizzo doesn't find her cool enough. This movie is based on a musical with the same name and stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing. It was success at the box office and has both a spin-off and a soundtrack.

Okay for our next round it's time for another director:

Martin Scorsese is an American director, script writer and producer. He was born on 17th November, 1942 in Queens, New York. Scorsese is of Italian decent. When he grew up he wanted to become a Catholic priest but when he went to New York University he decided to work with film instead. He has a master of arts with film as his major from 1966. While in College he began his career by making short films before he made his first feature film in 1967. In the 1970s he became friends with “the movie brats” of his generation and embarked on a collaboration with Robert De Niro. Scorsese’s career took off and he directed movies such as Taxi Driver (1976) and New York, New York (1977). But it would take until 2007 until he finally won an Academy Award, as best director for the movie The Departed (2006).

Today Scorsese is considered one of the most important directors of his generation. But which of his movies is your favorite?
