I don’t think you get it - whatever you believe you’re going through it’s very similar all over the Western world. Your economy is performing much better than Britain’s is, we went through the same authoritarian policies you talk during Covid - my friends in Canada had worse by the sounds of it, the UK even more than America is addicted to war and is involved in more wars than the vast majority of our neighbours. The political system here seems corrupt - designed to make change difficult. Our press is being bought up by far right zealots and the political discourse has changed so much that our media now express views and ideas that would have been seen as racist a few years ago. In order to facilitate that we have this ridiculous culture war where people obsess over trans and immigration etc. In the U.K. for example there is an obsession with trans issues - a campaign that is funded by American Evangelical right - across the water in Ireland where the culture war has not been established Trans people have more rights than they do in the UK and there was no outcry and no chaos. Maybe it’s too late for the UK and America, maybe the shift to the right is too permanent, the power of the far right too powerful to make change possible - but that is something we should be frightened of.

America may have the #1 economy in the world, but we're #37 in terms of quality of life, so that economy is working well for somebody but not the average person.

I've said from day one that the "woke" thing, with all its identity issues, was a scheme introduced to undermine the left. Why have all these righttwing corporations embraced woke-ism, especially when we know "get woke, go broke" is true (well, until BARBIE)?

It's designed to create a backlash in order to swing the pendulum back in the opposite direction, and to keep the underclasses fighting with each other to deflect attention away from what the rulers are doing with all the money -- and that's the oldest political trick in the book.

Unfortunately, the dumber amongst us leftist have taken the obvious bait like fools.

I'm not well versed in foreign affairs (except when it comes to countries the US wages imperialism in.) My perspective is admittedly that of an American, though I've learned some about the UK through this forum. I don't deny that right wing policies are on the rise in the West as a whole, or that the culture war is used to distract people from more pressing issues. I feel awful about that, but the US is still far from a bastion of leftist ideals (even if economies, authoritarianism, and war mongering is even worse elsewhere.)
I wasn’t suggesting that America is - I think the scary from looking on as an outsider is that America looks like it’s at risk of slipping into authoritarianism and losing its democracy. Biden just seems so ineffective in taking the fight to Trump and the far right - at a time when the situation seems perilous. If only there was someone strong and charismatic that could challenge Trump. To me he just seems like the appalling and repugnant kind of person - void of morals, integrity or any form of basic decency. When that is electable something has gone very, very wrong. We’ve had a taste of that in the U.K. with Boris Johnson and Liz Truss - but the thing is we can’t really challenge the right in the U.K. because our media controlled by the right and there is so much fake news and disinformation put out that it’s impossible to have meaningful and healthy democracy.

The problem is also that Biden's actual policies (as opposed to his stated policies) are far-right, too.

Yes, I've said before that a demagogue like Trump would never stand a chance at becoming president in any functioning democracy.

Mainstream media in the US is the propaganda apparatus of the two major parties. They tell voters what to think and who to vote for. The only time the duopoly turns against their own is when they speak out against the establishment's agenda. Dems and Republicans have mutual interests (their posturing over the culture wars notwithstanding.) That's why both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump were smeared so heavily by members of their own party. Both have since fallen in line to varying degrees, which is typical.

The problem is some people are so thoroughly convinced that Trump is the lone source of society's ills that they lash out at people rightfully rejecting both parties.

  • The way in which troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan was badly handled but ending the war was the right thing to do and I'm glad that Biden finally took that decision.
Well technically Trump made the decision to withdraw the troops from Afghanistan. Biden just followed through on a decision that had already been made and unfortunately he made a mess out of it. It was a mistake IMHO to announce publically which date the US troops would withdraw!
What do you think Biden should have done, let Covid rip through the population and not encourage people to get vaccinated?
By the time Biden became President people had already started to get vaccinated. So again it was Trump who made the decision to lockdown USA during the start of the pandemic.

Having said that, I don't envy the American people having to chose between Biden and probably Trump in the election again. :(

It should also be pointed out that the disaster in Afghanistan was already going on before the withdrawal. But the government and the media only began reporting it during the withdrawal because the contractors -- dey want dat money!!

Yes, it certainly wasn't a rousing success prior to withdrawal either.

Another item worth pointing out is that the Democrats partnered with devil spawn Liz Cheney to oppose withdrawing from Afghanistan when Trump was president.

Of course, some people would have us believe that war mongering Democrats are morally superior to a "vaccine skeptic" like RFK Jr.

Michigan Dems stun MSNBC host by demanding that Biden stop using their tax dollars to fund war in exchange for their vote.

Sticking to the narrative, the MSNBC host indignantly asks "are you not worried about what he (Trump) can do domestically to this country?"

Hmm, if only Trump had served a four year term so we'd know what to expect! LMAO, things weren't much different domestically under Trump than they are under Biden.

And even if Biden was raising everybody's wages and overall quality of life (which obviously isn't happening,) is it still worth the slaughter of civilians half a world away?

I guess we know the answer when it comes to the ghouls in corporate media.

If I were American and had a vote, I would cast it for Biden. There is a difference between being old and being too old. I think Biden is the former. He is elected to make decisions, not to run marathons or do physical construction work and he has been shown to be perfectly capable of making tough decisions when required to do so.
I agree. It's clear that he's physically frail, but I'm not persuaded that his mental acuity is as bad as his detractors would like us to believe.

Biden's mental acuity isn't just being challenged by his detractors, it's also being challenged by high-ranking officials and members of his own party.

If a politician I supported was regularly confused, forgetful, and incoherent, I wouldn't be in denial about it just because their detractors were also highlighting it.

You take every opportunity to talk about your perception of Biden's cognitive decline but rarely want to talk about Trump showing signs of dementia.

Biden's physician recently examined the President and said he was fit to do the job so I'm happy to believe someone with the facts over people repeating Trump attack lines.

And you act like Biden's issues come down to his usual gaffes and a stutter. Biden is also the current president, which makes his mental impairment more concerning.

That said, I have stated Trump is also mentally unfit to serve. I've also stated that I'm not a Trump supporter and will not be voting for him either, so what more do you want?

But that's always been how you operate. You defer to whatever authority figure supports your personal biases, regardless of what we can see with our own eyes.

Not only that, but Biden only received a physical because his doctors determined "he didn't need a cognitive exam." Well, isn't it convenient that determination is made at a time when even Democrats are concerned about Biden's cognitive abilities? A special counsel doesn't think he's mentally aware enough to stand trial, but his doctors won't give him a cognitive exam. Meanwhile, Trump's diagnosed with dementia by "licensed professionals" without so much as a medical visit. But that's perfectly acceptable, right? That's why I'm glad I'm no longer a member of the uniparty cult. Both Democrats and Republicans selectively choose which sources to believe, so long as it fits their narrative.

In contrast, you brush off critiques of Biden as "Trump attack lines," even though many high-ranking Democrats have the exact same concerns. It's blatant partisan hackery.

Oh come off it, everyone can see from your posts that you spend way more time attacking Biden than Trump. Even when Trump was President, you spent way more time attacking the Democrats. That's fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but don't claim your criticisms are balanced.

Biden may appear frail at times and he's undoubtedly slower than he used to be, but at least he’s rational. I may disagree with things that he does but that's because I think he's wrong and not because I think he's mentally incompetent.

Biden is getting major bills passed and negotiating with world leaders while Trump is making increasingly incoherent and unhinged statements. I'm a lot more concerned about Trump's mental health than I am about Biden's.

That's because, in my opinion, people like you fail to see how the policies of the Democrats (as well as their "pied piper strategy") helped elevate Trump in the first place.

And balanced or not, the fact remains I've said Trump is unfit to serve and that I will never vote for him. I shouldn't have to meet a quota when it comes to stating this.

Biden may appear frail at times and he's undoubtedly slower than he used to be, but at least he’s rational. I may disagree with things that he does but that's because I think he's wrong and not because I think he's mentally incompetent.
I guess I'm in the unique position of thinking he's wrong on most issues, as well as being mentally incompetent.

Of all the Biden policies I despise, his war mongering is the worst. It's not just wrong, it's evil. That's why I say we have uniparty rule because it's the same with Republicans.

Biden is getting major bills passed and negotiating with world leaders while Trump is making increasingly incoherent and unhinged statements. I'm a lot more concerned about Trump's mental health than I am about Biden's.
That's because you like Biden and hate Trump. If you weren't so myopic, you'd see that Biden's also incoherent and unhinged, albeit with the pretense of being a kindly old man.

IMO, the few good things he's done are ultimately insignificant in comparison to his crime bill, war mongering, threats to cut social safety programs, pro-fracking stance, etc.

"Everyone can see" ? Really?? You're the shallow black-and-white thinker, not him.

Whenever anyone points out that they're not a Trump fan, you still insist they are -- as long as they're not willing to agree that Biden is fit, competent and not corrupted.

Both sides are utterly corrupt, but you're too immature and ideological in your thinking to have a layered understanding of that.

Yes, it's fascinating how certain people who embrace "non-binary" when it comes to gender refuse to accept such a notion when it comes to politics.

Apparently, quotas matter too. If you criticize Biden and the Dems more than Trump, they automatically assume you're MAGA. Hence, any criticisms of Trump fall on deaf ears.

Here's the thing, though. It is also entirely possible to believe both sides are corrupt and that neither man is fit to hold the presidency and decide that BIDEN is still the best choice between them.

I can at least respect that position because I'm not being conned into believing Biden's mentally sharp and has many positive accomplishments.

Of course, the choice of who the lesser of two evils is varies depending on who you ask. While I'm abstaining, I feel for anybody making that choice.

I thought about abstaining. But my state is so close, abstentions are votes for Trump.

I just can't do that.
