Stanley Baxter Has Died

This news hasn't had a much coverage as I would have expected because I'm old enough to remember when Stanley Baxter was one of the biggest stars on UK TV. His shows were great comedy and I particularly liked his impersonations of The Queen because I always thought he looked quite a bit like her.

I must confess that because many of Stanley's peers have long since died I simply assumed that Stanley himself had as well. Of course, many of those people died far too young. It's heartening to see that Stanley lived to be a good age.

I always associate him with his good friend Kenneth Williams. Stanley received many mentions in KW's diaries, letters, autobiography and anecdotes. One anecdote that springs to mind is of a time Kenneth was a passenger in Stanley's convertible. While they were stopped in traffic a pedestrian recognised Stanley, stopped and said "Oh, it's... It's... No... No... Don't tell me... It's... Oh... Don't tell me", and Stanley retorted "I won't" as he sped off.

I saw him a few times in Panto when I was a little girl (if it wasnt him as the Star then it was Ricky Fulton North of the border)

I was always excited to go and see Panto and it was a great day out

99 is a grand old age

The Scots born comedian has died in a retirement home a few months shy of his 100th birthday.

In Britain, he was best known for being the star of his own eponymously named sketch show - the Stanley Baxter show - which aired on itv in the 1970s.

I believe that many of Stanley’s tv shows were produced by the legendary David Bell who went on to become head of light entertainment at London Weekend Television in the early 1980s.
