Telly Talk's "Reaction" function (Likes, etc.)

To me, that should not be removed-- if someone has gone to great lengths to find the facts about a particular subject being discussed, then "informative" seems to be a good way to say "way to find out things about this subject that I/we didn't know about before," among other things.
That's exactly how I've always interpreted it and used it.

I must be ignorant never having questioned the deeper meaning of all the reaction likes etc. I must be getting old obviously. I use "like, agree" mostly.

If I remember then I was posting in the old forum more or less twenty years ago, I wasn't very confident back then. Reading all this expert knowledge of people who watched the shows in their original run for example was sometimes intimidating. Additionally English is not my first language.
Maybe I'm too sensitive, but dislikes would have discouraged me back then.
So my only wish is to stay away from dislike/disagree functions. If someone wants to state his disagreement with me, I'd like to know why in order to get a discussion.

Thanks moderators for your work and your consideration in this matter.

Indeed-- a fair and reasoned explanation of opinions is usually the best way to get the juices flowing, so to speak, on a discussion of issues.

People need to just wise up. Anything can be viewed as passive aggressive or used passive aggressively, and so what if someone posts a passive aggressive smiley face on your post. It's an internet forum, not the United Nations.
Weren't the dislike and disagree ones removed during the TNT Dallas years because people just couldn't stand that people had differing opinions? I would understand how someone could be annoyed if someone replied to their post stating at length why they disagreed but why were they getting all up in arms about a meaningless smiley face with no words or proper context? Why would that bother you? Are you that sensitive?

I liked the disagree and dislike options as sometimes some posts were so rambling and full of it that that's all that was required. I also like creative use of language and word play, I like sarcasm and irony. I like using something in a way that it wasn't intended to be used. F**k the system! Bring back them all!

Right, it's not the end of the world but it's not very nice. And I guess it doesn't matter if someone does it randomly, but in a discussion when you're trying to connect and get on the same wavelength it can be unnecessary confusing, as in "where do we go from here?"
Why would that bother you? Are you that sensitive?
To (quasi-)quote the title of the Celine Dion thread: if you don't like it, don't rate it. It's that simple.

Well if they just flatly disagree, where can you go from there? That's how real conversation works too. If I meet someone at a party and they spew shit and I don't agree with them I just don't get involved, I don't need an endless pointless ping pong of words to try and understand their shit.

Yes.

But some do, even to the pint of (successfully) lobbying to have them removed -- and then pretending to be above it all and not to care.

So, like the United Nations, it's all politics.

Then you can agree to disagree and that's that. I like clarity.

If you and I were discussing The Colbys and I said "Frankie is misunderstood victim of circumstances" (which she was) and you would rate it with a DISAGREE smiley then that's all I need to know.
But an optimistic or informative smiley is dismissive of the entire post, not just that particular opinion.

But in a real life situation I would say I don't agree with you and we don't really have anywhere to go there, then leave the conversation, that's not unreasonable. Why shouldn't I be able to express my disagreement? I found that when I would have to go on at length why I disagreed it riled the poster up even more and then it would derail the conversation so it wasn't about what it started out as, and instead became an argument. Why cant I just express that I don't agree and move on. That's how life works.

The fact that people would be offended by someone's sarcasm to the point of having the functions removed is very, very sad.

Wouldn't the forum equivalent of that to just move on after reading a post you don't like? Why the need to click a button if you don't want to get involved?
What's wrong with simply saying I dislike it. Why is it alright to have the like and agree option but not the other side of the coin? Are we only allowed to be positive and agreeable without context, but if we have a different opinion we have to explain why? It's ludicrous and silly.

Missing the point again.
It's not about feeling personally offended, it's how it affects the communication.
You have a keyboard, use it. Be sarcastic in a creative way, it would be very much appreciated.

If someone walks by and waves at you, or someone walks by and flips you off -- exactly the same thing in your book?

The point of the forum is discussion and engagement. "Like" and "Agree" are positive reinforcements that almost certainly make people want to post more. "Dislike" and "Disagree" are conversational dead ends. There's nothing anyone can do with that information that is conducive to conversation.

Sarcasm isn't always picked up in black and white text. There are many times where it goes over people's heads, for many reasons, including language barriers. Or a difference in sense of humour. For instance a lot of American posters take a sarcastic response as a straight real response. I find it very dull to explain sarcasm, if you do that, it's not funny.

Someone should be allowed to express their disagreement just as they would their agreement. Lets be honest, if I disagree we aren't going to have much to talk about, but why should you be safe in your little bubble thinking everyone agrees with you and thinks your opinions are glorious. So what if 25 people hit disagree, that wont end conversation or pontification because those people were never going to add anything to the conversation anyway. You would know though, that not everyone agrees with you.

Well if they come back, I look forward to unleashing in the Celine Dion thread that you actively requested no negativity in.

Why would a bunch of likes or dislikes in that bother me. Now if you came and posted at length all of your reasons for disliking her that would bother me. Though you are free to do that now, you just don't because it would be a waste of your time. Maybe that will make you understand my point?
