US President Donald Trump was greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos as he took to the field for the national anthem during a college football game in Atlanta.

But as The Star-Spangled Banner began to play, social media users turned their attention to his anthem etiquette.

Mr Trump's supporters said they were proud to see him standing with his hand over his heart, while his critics said it looked as though he had forgotten the lyrics.

Did he forget the words?
He certainly didn't sing all of them.

Video of the anthem shows Mr Trump getting off to a slow start. He appears to mouth some of the words while occasionally pausing and missing some out.

Some lines and phrases are sung with gusto. The president can clearly be seen mouthing "bright stars" and he finishes with a flourish, smiling and singing "the land of the free and the home of the brave".

Politicians can win with what they do with their national anthem. I always think that if there is a chance you will forget the word,s you should just stand respectfully and listen to it being played and sung by others but when Jeremy Corbyn did that he was heavily criticised by in the main stream media for not singing and disrespecting the Queen.

For Trump to forget the words is particularly embarrassing because he places so much emphasis on patriotism.

I think he's forgotten the words the Constitution and Bill of Rights as well, but that seems to plague most politicians these days.

Dotty Donnie's brain is fried from all the tweeting and cable TV he watches every day. Not to mention buckets of KFC, burned steaks and all the Splenda from a dozen Diet Cokes he guzzles every day.

And makes a big deal out of NFL players kneeling.

According to 'Fire & Fury' he'd never known the Constitution and "his eyes rolled back in his head" by the time an aide got to the 4th amendment during an attempt to teach him.

Excellent point. It's just bluster and pandering to his base. They equate patriotism with forced nationalism.

I doubt Trump gives a rat's ass about the national anthem. It's like how he pretends to be a Christian, yet refers to Second Corinthians as "Two" Corinthians. Proud of himself, he says to the crowd "That's the one you like, right?" The people who buy into Trump's patriotic and religious act aren't very bright, and can't fathom that Trump is simply pandering to them.
