There’s “no credible pathway to 1.5C in place” today, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) insisted in a new report, despite legally binding promises made at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference to prevent average temperatures rising by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

Beyond 1.5C there will be dangerous impacts for the world. Some countries, particularly poor ones in Africa, Asian and South America will become too hot to inhabit and we will see mass migration from those regions to other part of the world. While the UK home secretary is dreaming of sending refugees to Rwanda, soon there will be an exodus from that country, and others, in the other direction.

The future is bleak unless countries take urgent actions immediately. I don't normally support the law breaking of Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil but those protesters are right about this urgency of this issue.

Last year was the hottest ever for the UK. Also, 10 or the hottest years ever have occurred in the past 2 decades.

Last year (2023) was the hottest ever on record. "What struck me was not just that (2023) was record-breaking, but the amount by which it broke previous records," said Andrew Dessler, a professor of atmospheric science at Texas A&M University.

To paraphrase the United Nations secretary general António Guterres, "The era of global warming is well and truly over, we are now clearly in a period of global boiling". Anyone who tries to argue that we are doing enough to deal with the climate emergency is ignoring the facts.

Of course not. Their "solution" is to target the masses by phasing out gas appliances and vehicles while the elites continue living lives of luxury.

Meanwhile, the world's biggest emitter of emissions (the US military) continues to grow and expand its domineering and destructive influence.

I don't doubt that climate change is real, but the grift is forcing average people to make all the sacrifices while the elites continue to rape, pillage, and live comfortably.

There is some truth in what you're saying. There is a push for individuals to reduce their carbon emission at home and the pressure put on big business is no where as great. The issue too urgent and serious not to take a more holistic approach to the problem and everyone needs to take action now.

This year (2024) the average global temperature is predicted to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels which was the limit set at COP21 (the Paris Agreement) so whatever governments claim they are doing, it clearly is not enough.

Living in South Florida I’ve become quite used to “frying” annually. This past summer was the hottest I’ve ever experienced yet I feel like I’m now saying this every year. The conversations used to be, “Well, this was a hot summer but remember three years ago? That was worse.” But now that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. I really hope that thread title is inaccurate, but sadly I’ve accepted the “frying” possibility.
