The de-sexualized, homey husband also makes it a challenge to bring out that horny sexy beast in him. I've read that somewhere.
hahaha... could be I´ll ask my wife about it! :D :D
perhaps that is also the reason why, since Leonardo di Caprio, the so-called "dadbod" has become socially acceptable as a sexy trademark.

My least favorite was Richard Avery.
I think I loved Laura's character too much.

It's a tie with Diana Fairgate... She was so annoying.

Mack and Karen could both be a little, okay a lot, overbearing but they were good people who would go out of their way to help their friends so I can forgive them for being sanctimonious from time to time. Richard was a jerk but he knew he was a jerk, plus he was vulnerable. Once he realized he was a horrible husband and unfit parent he did the right thing and left. Laura was one of the core characters essential to the show, it was never the same without her. Abby could have become a cartoon villain but instead she was a complex character; she was the one "essential element" the show lacked when it began, it took off once Abby moved to Seaview Circle.

Jill and Cathy both fell into the same trap: they were characters who were driven by plot when it should be the other way around. Cathy started out likable and I forgave her later missteps (though that may be more due to Lisa Hartman's charisma than the writers). Jill gave us one of the best plots of the series: Jill's attempt to kill "Poor Val" so there's no way she would be my least favorite. As for "Poor Val" I adore Joan Van Ark, she took a character who already had depth and made her even more fascinating. Yes, Val grew a bit tiresome when she fell into the trap of becoming the resident victim but the writers did a brilliant job of redeeming her when Jill tried to kill her. It's a shame that Val so quickly went from being redeemed to being destroyed by bad writing; I agree completely with Joan Van Ark that Val's relationship with Danny and her defense of him was completely out of character - but that one plot isn't enough to change my overall extremely positive view of the character.

My problem with Paige isn't the character, it's that I think the writers devoted too much time to the character at the expense of the rest of the cast. Paige's plots also resulted in a lot of extraneous characters being added who brought very little to the show. I preferred Anne when she was a guest star. I liked Kate, I really liked her. I can forgive her for getting involved with Gary so quickly after Val's "death"; the heart wants what it wants. Gary? He was a hot mess: an alcoholic and an adrenaline junky but he was lovable. Moving on so quickly after Val's death? Men do that, women need time but men don't. I know a man who remarried within eighteen months of losing his first wife (it may have been less time than that) and I know that he LOVED his first wife.

I hated Diana. I hated, hated, hated her. Thoroughly unlikable and deplorable person. I would not have wept a single tear if she had been killed by Chip. Is Diana my least favorite character? No, there's someone worse, much worse: Claudia. Annoying as hell, brought nothing - not a damn thing - to the show.

This is a hard question to answer, as Knots is one of the few shows where I don’t really hate any of the characters. If I had to choose my least favorite main character, meaning one who‘s actor or actress was fortunate enough to make it into the show’s opening credits, then I’d have to say Diana. I don’t mind her as a supporting character, but I never found her likable enough to exist as anything beyond that. I also think part of this had to do with her being a “main character” at a time that the show didn’t really focus it’s younger cast. For example, most of her story line had very little to do with her and actually revolved around Karen’s reaction.

But speaking of the younger cast, I really wish they had utilized Olivia and Michael more in their final seasons. They were as equally sidestepped as Diana, but in my opinion, earned their status as a “main character” far more than Diana ever did. I really would have liked seeing more of Harold and Olivia and wish they had been better integrated into the rest of the show. I also would have taken more Michael over Val’s brain virus any day.

LILLY FUCKING MAY! Hate her dumb ass country bumpkin, lying ass. She was a lousy mother and I wish Val had told her to swallow bleach and piss off. I never saw her worth. She did one good thing by running down Dianas rat boyfriend.... what else? Nothing

I nearly laughed when I found out everyone, apparently hated Diana. My mother said she stopped watching the show because of, "that miserable brat daughter of Karen's."
Was she always intended to be so unlikable? I realize they needed an opposite for Karen, but lawdy Christ, what a pain in the ass. I haven't seen the series, 3rd season onward in 20 plus years and I'm about ready to watch again. I know I'm in for a world of annoying Diana by S4.

Some of the later additions were garbage. Ann, Greg's dumb ass sister, her daughter and yes, PAIGE.

The Wards. Never gave one shit about either one. Glad they left.

Micheal was always a dumb ass kid and even though he grew into scorching eye candy, his acting was shit and his character dead end.

Mac- although he did become an important character, never felt anything for him as I did for Sid, Gary, Val, Abby, even Richard. Never wanted him to leave, but didn't care either way. Never felt him and Gary would be friends in any scenario.

I loved Jill as she provide some much needed fuel for the show in its later years.

Olivia was decent as a kid and her drug storyline did more for Abby than her. Well done.

Oh yeah. I can agree. There was always something about him that bothered me. On the one hand, he was always committed to social issues - on the other hand, he was stuffy as hell. Then he pretended to be liberal and open but was incredibly authoritarian. Then he kept signaling to Karen that she could come to him with all her problems - but when the time came, he didn't really listen to her or shrugged off her problems. Especially when he was in one of his countless midlife crises or had to pity himself again.
After the Wohlfbridge affair, he should have been written off the show and Karen should have been given another man! Preferably without a toupee.

I'm not sure the toupee ought to enter into discussions of Mack's character, since "Mack" didn't wear one. Kevin Dobson did, but they never wrote anything hinting that Mack was wearing a toupee. Everything else you mention is of course fair game, since the character flaws you mention are what should be discussed.

My least favorite character is, BY FAR, Karen...

I simply can't stand his need to know everything, to make judgement about everything, trying to fix everything even when it's not his business!!
When she has a problem, nobody can understand but when a problem occurs to anybody else she HAS to feel compelled to get involved personally!:scream:
Unbearable!:2B:
And since she appears in every single episode I know I have that moment when I will scream inside out!!
I must say that I think Mack has the same mentality, so they perfectly match each other!

PS: I also can't stand Diana... No charisma, no interesting storylines and I think Lonow is not a good actress...

In conclusion, Excepting Michael, I can't stand that family :llooll:

Yes. I agree. He was so bi-polar. One minute he is quoting the bible the next he is being abusive. This is another character that the writers were'nt to sure about what to do with. They tried to make him relevant by putting him on that tv show. He eventually faded away... :bye:
Actually, from my experience, all those "extreme" Bible-thumpers in public almost ALWAYS have that darker side in private.... it was tragic yet completely believable, knowing what often becomes of those American televangelists.
