it looks like the cop was sitting at the driveway at 782 Potrero Rd. They've built a wall near the road since then, but the pillars at the ends of the old stone walls at the side of the driveway are still there.

(it's not a shabby little estate, I'd say)

Yeah...the pillars..but I still couldn't reconcile this. Here are my thoughts. As the police car pulls out, he's right by that tree that used to bend the road as discussed in a previous post here, and has a reflector. 782 Potrero to me was too far down. Plus 782 has a bend down the road too close to the driveway, unless distance-distorted by the camera which we have seen is done frequently. I'm wondering if back then they entranced the same property, only that 901 was split off and is now substantially different. At 901, zooming in gets the hill in perspective better, plus the driveway is larger....not that that really matters 40 years later. Plus 901 is closer to the JMJ pull off...doesn't seem to me to be that long of a drive, tho' the take was split. Like I said...just my perspective.

What I find interesting is this shot, with a bend in the road and white fence on the left. Immediately after, as Peter is ready to pull into JMJ, the fence magically turns to chain-link.

yep, just when you think you have it nailed, something pops up that doesn't square with the older or current view! Distances can look wildly different depending on the camera angle and focus.

It would be amazing if the Google Street View went back to 1978. It's interesting how quickly some of the newer trees next to the road grow from 2008-15, and also how some of the older ones (oaks, I think they are) look much the same as in the late 70s or early 80s.

ok, one more Portero Rd. one before the nice men in the white coats show up to haul me off to the looney bin again:

first, a creative shot from a tree in Sue Ellen's Sister, just before the famous 'Bobby drives around the bend, passing a small blue car going the other direction' segment that they used in a subsequent season as well.

Here's with "your back" to the JMJ entrance from the other direction. Hidden on the right is an entrance with urns. Note the slight dip in the road by the urn entrance. Interesting stuff. I'm really enjoying all of these posts....you guys are the best!!! Plus the road bends in the proper direction according to the Bobby shot. (If I were there, I would be right at the bend that bends to Bobbys left coming toward "me")

oh wow, yes! I was going in the wrong direction.. the 'urn' entrance looks like the Royal Oaks today. The buildings a bit more down the road on the right in the Bobby shot are there today as well. I wonder if the shot is from the tree that's still there near the driveway entrance.

What still blows me away is the way the camera compresses the distance so much. Those buildings are a good ways down the road. It makes the shot interesting, for sure, but trashes true perspective.

Jori's beach pad in Malibu. Note that it's at the end of a parking lot so film crews don't interfere with traffic. I don't know if they filmed at the cafe at the other end of the parking lot.

Still searching for Swellen's townhouse. Looks like she's on a corner. There's a house to the left of her L/R window over the bush, facing her. I think there's another series shot showing the home on a corner. This is a tough one! Took a long shot and reviewed townhomes on Realtor.com in Dallas and Culver City (general LA has too many).

While searching for Swellen's townhome, I came across this article, in a cheap publication called the Dallas Observer, no less, calling Pam's mother's house Swellen's house. Typical press half-@$$ed reporting.

They Done Tore Down Sue Ellen Ewing's House
Robert Wilonsky | January 6, 2011 | 10:38am

Friend of Unfair Park PeterK directs our attention this morning to a just-posted Flickr set from friend of the show Scott Dorn, a photographer who has spent the last several years documenting this teardown town. Turns out, Scott got a last-minute call late last week from Lindamood Demolition, the company razing 4930 Park Lane, the 1938 manse that's the longtime home of Robert Dedman Jr., former CEO of ClubCorp, which was founded by his late father. (Though Scott tells me this morning he was informed, by the housekeeper who was there New Year's Eve, that the house was actually built in '25, 13 years earlier than Dallas Central Appraisal Records indicate.)

If you like this story, consider signing up for our email newsletters.
SHOW ME HOW
Scott, armed with only a cell phone and two disposable cameras, caught as much of the action inside and out as he could -- in large part because he, maybe like you, recalls the home serving as Sue Ellen's house on Dallas. (It's always been a highlight on that drive along Park, between Inwood and Midway.) Notes Scott, "Robert Dedman tried to have the house restored, but the cost was $15 million to restore it -- too much money." This is what it looked like just before the 'dozers got to 'dozing. Two more photos, from Scott's Facebook page, follow.

In the article, if you click the "This is what it looked like" link, you get this.

Look what I stumbled across on 3504 Armstrong Ave, Dallas. We got Maggie's house. I was google-driving the area from Knox St., as a dear friend used to manage the old Highland Park Cafeteria at 3311 Knox.

amazing!! I bet if we gave the place a thorough search, tearing apart the walls and what not, we could finally find that elusive copy of Pam and Ed's annulment papers!

Great find, Bill!

We enjoy eating at the HPC now, although it is in a different location!
So cool. Hope it lasts. Is it anywhere near as good as the one on Knox was supposed to be? (I didn't get a chance to hit the original place)

Yeah...it's about 8-10 blocks from Jerry Jones' home.

man, I didn't realize Dallas was so expensive! That house is decent-sized but clearly nothing special (it was supposed to be the 'modest place on the wrong size of the tracks' where the Barneses lived, right?). Even in SF, where I live (San Francisco, not Southfork!), that particular house might not be worth *that* much. I'm guessing though that things drop significantly in the Dallas area as you move out of the fancy neighborhoods, whereas in the Bay Area you have to drive hours to get to a location where prices aren't outrageous

Yeah...location, Highland Park, Preston Hollow, University Park are the prime residential areas. Irving, next door, is a LOT less expensive.

Nice catch on finding the Texaco station!

No fair googling this. . .

Do you know what Texaco stands for?
