I want to start a discussion ahead of the broadcast of the King Coronation on 6th May Saturday.
ITV yet to announce their coverage plans but the BBC already confirmed theirs! https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/articles/2023/bbc-how-to-watch-the-coronation-and-coronation-concert
Coverage will be on BBC One and iPlayer with a signed version on BBC Two. There will also be accessible coverage for people who are blind or partially sighted on Red Button, hosted by Petroc Trelawny. The Coronation will also be the BBC’s most accessible live event ever on BBC iPlayer.

Your thoughts on this below-have your say

I find this fascinating, because the last time there was a coronation was in what 1953? I don’t know about here in the us what coverage there will be but I expect there will be a broadcast of it.
I would have to look it up.

Two things I hope the coverage will address, firstly something good on an alternative channel for the majority of Britons who like me are not interested in the coronation and secondly, the BBC needs to be less fawning and obsequious over the Royals and show balance and impartiality by giving equal coverage to the growing republican movement.

I agree. Regardless of our personal feelings on the Monarchy I'll will be watching as this will become part of history. Whether or not the Monarchy survives my lifetime I can say I witnessed this event, just like the Queen's passing.

I agree.

I plan on watching it, not just because it’s a big part of our life right now, but also I find it captivating. I would much rather experience this than avoid it and not learn anything. That said, I do appreciate its not for everyone, so I hope there is an alternative, but if the way our TV channels are always high jacked by the football, I feel for those who don’t have any streaming sites to escape it.

As much as I think our country is unbalanced and corrupt, I’ve always been interested in the monarchy and many of the traditions that have continued through the years.

In terms of BSL Interpretation, it's good to see BBC Two doing this ALL over again, this time for the Coronation. ITV HAS confirmed to me that they will do BSL Coverage. Yet to announce the channel, surely on ITV1 or on ITV3

the majority of Britons
Will be watching the Coronation I think - at some stage and it will be one of the highest ratings progs of the year
It will also generate ££££ in tourism as people will come from far and wide and from abroad to see it

Charles is not QE2 and I dont have the same love and affection for him - she was a one off and special - and it will never be the same again, but its history, I love history, and no one does ceremony, pomp and pageantry quite like the Brits - The Queens funeral was an amazing, truly well organised event and it didnt miss a beat. It was faultless.

And I will lap it all up, and I am getting a day off from the NHS to watch it

My dad on the other hand - who very much valued the Queen for her life of service, and was born in the same decade as her, doesnt like Charles "The Adulterer" or his mistress (as he calls them) and will have no intention of watching and will be hoping for a sunny day to do some gardening.

I feel for those who don’t have any streaming sites to escape it.
I dont have any streaming services like Netflix, Sky, Disney etc - but there is always something on the iplayer or ITVx to watch / catch up on
Failing that Ive got Crossroads :) x

Its good to see that BSL will be interpreting /signing- I watch most progs now with subtitles

People always claim the monarchy is good for tourism and it's regularly used to justify the money we spend to support their lavish lifestyles but their is no evidence to support this. The campaign group Republic made a freedom of information request to Visit Britain (the government funded tourist agency) asking for any data or research they might have that showed the impact of the monarchy on tourism. They couldn’t provide any.

Research has estimated that each bank holiday costs the British economy £2.3bn through lost productivity. Even Visit Britain's most optimistic guess for revenue brought in by tourists encouraged to come here by the Royals is significantly less that this.

There is an argument that the coronation can be justified because it is a moment of national celebration but as a means of bringing in tourist revenue it will provide a very poor return on our money.

How do you feel about BSL Interpretation appearing on BBC Two and ITV? is it in the right step towards these events having sign interpretation? Have your overnight thoughts here, in case you missed the news see below: Sign Language.png

It's right that the coverage should be more accessible for people with hearing impairments so I think it’s great that the BBC and ITV are going to have it signed. However, why are they putting it in BBC2 and presumably ITV will put it on one of their minor channels? I think it should be on its main coverage and use it as an opportunity to be more inclusive and raise awareness that TV should be accessible for everyone. A version could be streamed on iPlayer and ITVX for people who don’t want to see the BSL interpretation.

I would like the option not to see it if im honest, as I find it distracts me from what Im watching - having someone signing in the bottom corner of a screen and I dont concentrate on the TV prog - so a bit like subtitles - would like an option of you can switch it on or off

For subtitles I usually have them switched on

Yes, I'll be watching. Mid-morning morning in the UK translates to prime time in Australia. Perfect timing for Saturday night viewing. :)

Hmm, I think in this day and age there's always a way to watch something else. Besides, one day without television is not the end of the world.

True, but I think that a coronation is one of the (if not THE) reasons to justify that point of view. Regardless of how people feel about it, it is a rare spectacle.

Let's have the coronation first, and then talk about everything that's wrong with it. That way we can have our cake and eat it.

This is true however we are paying for the right to watch TV in the UK so the BBC in particular should provide decent alternative programming for the majority of the people in this country who are not interested in the coronation.

It's right that the event should be broadcast on the main channel but having it shown simultaneously on BBC1, BBC2 and ITV is not reflecting the opinion of the majority.

Why? He's already king, the whole ceremony is unnecessary and is just pro-royal propaganda. We are spending millions on the "rare spectacle" that most people don't care about while ignoring the common spectacle of people sleeping rough on the streets. That is the obscenity of having a monarchy.

Yeah, you should be able to claim a refund for that day of useless television.
He's already king, the whole ceremony is unnecessary
But it is especially those kind of ceremonies that makes you feel the monarchy.

I think you're putting the cart before the horse. Monarchy isn't only about the monarchs themselves, it's also about tradition and a country's identity.
That the UK of all countries should have such a shocking poverty rate, that is the obscenity.
A (relatively) healthy economy, which is what most West-Eurpean countries have represented for quite some time, is not a blessing. It's not a matter of good luck. It is supposed to be standard for people all around the world.

Surely there must a reason why refugees try to get into Europe rather than, say, a different African or Arabian country.
