Dallas Actors Members of the cast who also directed episodes

Would it be possible to come up with a definitive list of cast members who were also given the complement of being allowed to direct some episodes of the series?

Certainly, I remember that Larry Hagman as the star turn directed some episodes but were there any others?

Also, I’ve often been puzzled as to how Larry directed scenes that he himself was in.

This is to say how is possible to be in front of and behind the camera at the same time?

I think we have discussed this before. But yes several of the cast did direct some episodes too.

Larry Hagman has directed 32 episodes.
Patrick Duffy has directed 29 episodes.
Linda Gray has directed 5 episodes.
Steve Kanaly has directed 3 episodes.
Ken Kercheval has directed 2 episodes.

It's not unusual. Clint Eastwood has done it in a number of feature films. Barbra Streisand did it twice. I assume they just give their instructions to the camera person and other actors, say "action", and play the scene. I don't imagine it would be much different from a non-acting director except that they can't watch from the "outside." They can't talk or signal while filming is going on in any case or the actors would be distracted from the scene.

I think it depends on the the size of the production. But I worked on a tv movie once and on that movie the director was not the person who called "Action" but the assistant director was.

Slightly off topic, but it’s interesting to see that while she didn’t do any directing, Susan Howard wrote two episodes (the 23rd episodes of seasons 9 and 10). I think she may be the only cast member to have an acting and writing credit on the show.
