Time To Abolish The UK Monarchy

The scandal surrounding Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and his recent arrest exposes a fundamental flaw in having a monarchy: no matter how badly its members behave, we are stuck with them for life.
Had Andrew been the first-born child of Elizabeth II, he would now be king, with no democratic mechanism to remove him as our head of state, regardless of his conduct. In a republic, an elected president who behaved in this way could at least be voted out at the end of their term.

Instead, the Royal Family has protected Andrew for years, closing ranks and deflecting scrutiny. In time, it may become apparent just how much the family knew about his behaviour and how deliberately they chose to ignore it.

This sordid affair reveals a deeper truth: the monarchy does not work for the public. It believes it is untouchable. The sooner we abolish this undemocratic institution, the better.

I disagree with you. I much prefer having a monarchy to a republic. That said I am grateful that the Swedish laws were changed into making the first born child the successor to the throne regardless of gender. Because of that we'll some day have Queen Victoria in Sweden. I much prefer Victoria and her husband Daniel to her younger brother Carl-Philip and his wife Sofia.

I don't like the way Prince Charles treated Princess Diana when they were married. I was definitely on Diana's side when they divorced. After reading Prince Harry's book there's no doubt about that the British Royal family is a somewhat dysfunctional family. That being said I would like to see Prince William and Kate become the next King and Queen of the UK some day in the future.

But yes it's lucky that Andrew was not the first born son. His behaviour is a disgrace to the royal family. That I agree on. It's a shame though, as I used to like him and Fergie. I feel bad for their daughters though.

Kate and Willie are too out of touch with the public to be effective monarchs. This week when the Andrew/Epstein scandal was leading the news, Wille's response was to give an interview to talk about his mental health and not even mention mental health in relation to the victims. Kate only works 25 days a years, significantly less than King Charles, who is an old man being treated for cancer so I doubt very much she could cope with the workload of being Queen.

This photo was taken in 2019 long, after Andrew’s alleged sex crimes with Epstein were made public and now they claim they are "deeply concerned". Yeah, right.

Psychics (not that I believe in that stuff) say William won't make it to the throne, Kate will disappear (death or divorce), and someone will be crowned king who never expected to.

A spare, perhaps?

Does Meghan remind anybody a just little bit of boyfriend-slaughterer Jodi Arias?

You're forgetting the fact that Kate's also had cancer. I don't think it's strange that she's only been working for 25 days while undergoing chemo and being a mother with three young children.

When my sister had cancer she had to work every day until a month before she died because she had bills to pay and 2 children to support and, unlike Kate, she didn't have over 60 staff to help her. Women the world over have to work when they have cancer, doing more work in a month than Kate does in a whole year. Kate has always been workshy and didn't do much work even before her diagnosis.

We wouldn't tolerate an elected President who did so little work. If we had an elected head of state who did so little work, we would be able to vote them out and get someone in who could do a better job.

So far this year Kate has only worked 5 days. Most people living with cancer will have worked 5 days in one week and they do more strenuous work that going to the ballet or spending 30 minutes playing with children at a school.

Andrew, who still has police protection officers which we are paying for, has done nothing other than being an embarrassment to our country.

Abolish the lot of them, stop paying them £510 million each year and make them do real work to earn their keep.

You're counting on the common sense of voters. Good luck with that.

Being untouchable is actually a pratical part of leadership, otherwise he's going to be just another voice in the crowd.
And that's always going to be the big dilemma: we want "strong leadership!" unless we "don't!" We always want to have our cake and eat it, and as the Royals would say "let them eat cake".

The issue I have with monarchy is that they’re shielded from criticism and celebrated across the media - so we can never know what they’re actually like. Despite the fact the media is so focused on making William appear like the strong, quiet but determined type who is a great family man - I don’t buy it. I don’t think getting rid of them would lead to stronger democracy in the UK but we would still have got rid of them at least.

The trouble with the UK Royal Family is that they think they are untouchable and they provude no real leadership so we get the worst of both worlds. That's why the King's brother was able to get away with giving secret government documents to a paedophile.

Willie, who recently was recently hanging out with the Saudi Crown Prince, a man who was heavily featured in the Epstein files, is just another example of how out of touch he is. Willie also took money from someone associated with Epstein to fund his Earthshot Prize. The focus is rightly on Andrew, but few of that family's hands are clean, including Willie.

I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like your sister lived a tough life. I hope someone was able to take care of her children once she passed away. :(
I think over here most people who have jobs and are diagnosed with cancer can get some sick leave to focus on their health and take a year off while battling the beast known as cancer. Even though this might be changing as our social security system and benefits have changed radically for the worse in the past 10 years.

I don't think the current first lady of the USA did that much work during her first term either. It's not fair to compare Kate to the President as she is not the one in line for the throne. Her husband and children are. Hence her most important job is to do what Prince Philip did, support the person who will take over the crown.

That’s ok but if her role is to support William then he should pay for her.

Thank you. Our family came together and looked after my nieces who are now wonderful young women. Unlike Kate, we didn't have a team of nannies to do the work, we did everything ourselves.

It's an elitist argument that posh rich people should be lauded for doing nothing when they are totally capable of working while everyone else is expected to to work hard, even when they are sick.

Kate is little better than a bone idle parasite living on the backs of hard working people. She's currently in remission but only wants to do 5 days work in almost 2 months. I'm expected to think she is an asset to this country? Hell no!

The people we should look up to are carers, teachers, shop workers, cleaners and others key workers who keep the country running , not lazy elites who do very little other than provide cover for an alleged treacherous child rapist.

Here in Australia I'm surprised our Federal Labor Party - currently in government - is not taking advantage of the current woes afflicting The Royal Family. But then I'm reminded the labor party - while in office - makes little noise about Australia dumping that institution until they are in opposition.

Royalty also means tourism. Who needs to see a castle if there's no king or queen in it.
Tourism is good for the hard-working everyday man.
