AOC says "Woke 1.0 was crazy"

I've been reading a lot about Democrats and specifically progressives, backing away from what they are now calling woke 1.0 and now embracing what they are calling woke 2.0.

The "old" woke focused heavily on identity politics and social issues. The "new" woke is built around economics and affordability issues.

Progressive poster girl AOC is trying to distance herself from the old woke, saying "woke 1.0 was crazy." And yeah, a lot of it was, and it did a lot of damage to this country. Wokism is directly responsible for putting Donald Trump in the White House. It really angers me to see AOC and others now trying to brush the whole thing aside and act like it never happened. I personally don't think the Democrats can ever recover. Their intense focus on identity politics has been masterfully weaponized by MAGA.

AOC can't just laugh this off. She needs to take some responsibility for the carnage.

Actually, I guess what I really want AOC to do is just shut up.

What does it say about the U.S. when an old, orange, narcissistic, morally bankrupt buffoon can recover with self-proclaimed Christians from:

- Central Park Five
- Trump University fraud
-Trump Foundation charity fraud for personal profit
- 'grab'em by the pu$$y'
- multiple marriage infidelities (while wife pregnant)
- good people on 'both sides'
- Barack Hussein Obama
- Complete bungling of initial Covid spread
- orchestrating a violent insurrection on the Capitol
-stolen election lies and attempts to steal the Presidency.....etc.

But....wanting everyone treated equally with the same opportunities to better their situation... regardless of race, gender or sexuality is somehow bad to American Christians???

What makes this so ridiculous is that AOC's platform was built around economics and affordability issues in 2018! She shifted to "woke 1.0" because it was the trendy thing to do at the time. I guess she wants us to forget that now since most of the country has turned on the self-important woke garbage. I guess that's what happens when people can't pay their bills and there's yet another war going on. AOC vowed to "bring the ruckus" when it came to holding the establishment accountable, and she's since refused to hold a floor vote on Medicare for all, approved several war funding bills, and even called Nancy Pelosi "Mama Bear." If that's her idea of "bringing the ruckus," I'm not impressed at all.

Obviously, the platform should have been built around economics and affordability issues from the start but calling it "the new woke" doesn't work either. That term is just too toxic. However, I've been hearing another pejorative. These days, I'm more likely to hear "far left" or "radical left," usually by some old neoliberal relic like James Carvile. I guess they fear that they're going to take over the Democratic Party, and this is their death rattle since they're on their way out. However, I think you're right that the Dem party is in serious trouble after going all in on wokeism the past ten years or so. Not to mention the fact that there's not a lot of daylight between neoliberalism and neoconservatism.

Unfortunately, that was never what woke-ism was ever about.

When it got started a decade or so ago, it was so extreme and ridiculous that I figured it was some kind of intel psy-op to bring the left down.

Turns out I was kinda-sorta right. Last year, the USAID files came out and they revealed that they were fomenting wokeness overseas to destabilize the culture in countries where they wanted to facilitate regime-change. (Which is why many nations don't want our "humanitarian help"). So, if they're doing it around the world, why wouldn't they bring it home to their own people for the same reasons?

Well, it turns out they did.

Several years ago, AOC admitted that "there's no political Left left in Washington," conceding that the Democrats are really center and center-right, and the Republicans are right and far-right."

So, AOC knows. But she was on-board with the woke-ism stuff because it was en vogue and a prerequisite to survive the Democratic party at the time. And the "identity" politics helped deflect attention away from the fact that the Democrats were doing nothing to help the middle class (beyond the rhetoric).

Trump has no mask. He has no filter. He's a monster in plain sight, warts and all. He just can't help himself. What you see is what you get. The Dems, on the other hand, are much craftier. Generally speaking, they're more charismatic and charming. The fact that they have you believing they simply want people from all walks of life treated equally speaks volumes. I actually used to believe that too until I looked past the rhetoric and followed their actions. If I voted based on empowering speeches, I'd vote for Dems every time. If I voted based on who started the wars, who was in favor of corporate subsidies, and who kept wages and social safety nets stagnant (or worse, supported cuts), I'd stay home.

Trump, yes...the puppet masters manipulating his strings are not in plain sight, however. They're using Trump and the feckless Republicans in power to take down the U.S. position in the world...and it's working at an alarmjng rate.

Who are 'they'? I have no skin in the game for either U.S. political party. I'm merely using the definition of the word woke...that is until the right weaponized it and made it the apparent root of all evil (the carrot on the string so to speak to hide the real corruption and takeover intent).

Look, look over here at the illegal aliens stealing your jobs (you know, those low wage jobs Americans don't want anyway) the trans.....oh the scary trans whom want to convert your children....they want to perform sex changes on your children in public schools....oh the furry litter boxes in schools that someone's barber's daughter's 3rd cousin said exists in their local school and is coming to yours if you vote for Democrats.......

Those crazy beliefs can somehow be overcome and Republicans can be perceived as credible candidates but Dems can't overcome woke????

The puppet masters manipulating the strings have never been in plain sight, but they've always been manipulating the puppets. They didn't even want Trump in office because he goes off script so often. For all of his "America first" bluster on the campaign trail, Trump's doing exactly what every other deep state puppet before him has done; funding a war and a genocide on Israel's behalf, increasing the wealth of the uber-wealthy even more, and doing all of this by increasing the financial burden of the poor and middle class.

Who are 'they'? I have no skin in the game for either U.S. political party. I'm merely using the definition of the word woke...that is until the right weaponized it and made it the apparent root of all evil (the carrot on the string so to speak to hide the real corruption and takeover intent).

"They" are the Dems. They're the ones who claim to care about equality, but when it comes right down to it, they weaponized "woke" as much as anybody. Instead of focusing on policies such as universal health care, a living wage, and ending the wars, they decided to embrace Dick Cheney's brand of neoconservatism instead. As such, all of the disaffected neocons who hated Trump and MAGA left the Republican Party and were welcomed with open arms into the Democratic Party among the establishment elite.

In their rebrand, it was cool to be pro-war, anti-living wage, and anti-universal healthcare, so long as you were "woke." It was a cynical ploy, but they didn't care. Even the CIA and the military would highlight how "cool" it was to be part of their organization because gays, women, people of color, trans people, and other diverse groups were now part of these once exclusive institutions. It didn't make much sense, of course, but what they appeared to be doing here is trying to make imperialism seem palatable to the public.

As far as trans kids are concerned, you don't even need Republicans to talk about them because Dems did enough of that themselves. You couldn't get them to sign on to ending the wars, supporting a living wage, and supporting universal healthcare, but they were certainly all on board for gender affirming care for children. As soon as I heard that, it immediately clicked when Snarky said this was likely an intel psy-op. Even the biggest progressive lgbtq+ ally is likely going to have some reservations with that, to say the least. But again, thanks to woke 1.0, those folks are called transphobes for having concerns about child genital reassignment surgery and puberty blockers. Go figure.

As for illegal aliens, I think it's disgraceful how both parties treat them. I do believe every country needs secure borders, and the Dems shouldn't have allowed millions of people to enter here illegally. On the other hand, Republicans shouldn't make demeaning generalizations about them either, especially since many of them are wanting a better life. Many have even been displaced by our own foreign policy. That's why I feel like there should be a path to citizenship for undocumented workers with an otherwise clean record and work history. I'm probably getting sidetracked here, but to me, I don't consider this a "woke 1.0" issue because it's actually legit and not the usual cynical nonsense.

Another aspect of woke is identity politics, which they weaponized to use as a shied from criticism. For example, criticizing a politician who happened to be a woman, a person of color (or both) would often get you labeled a racist or a sexist, even if the criticisms were entirely policy based. Again, it was a ploy, but that is what woke 1.0 was all about.

Lastly, there was the whole "defund the police" nonsense. I believe that was the main reason AOC finally said that "woke 1.0 was crazy" (even though she was part of it). Of course, that also gives psy-op vibes because it feeds into the "radical/far-left" narrative that right wingers and neoliberal relics like James Carvile are always fear mongering about whenever they talk about socialists and progressives. "Defund the police" has always been a poorly worded phrase because it comes across like abolish the police. Instead, the focus should have been on putting funds towards retraining officers to deescalate situations. Demilitarizing the police and investing in mental health facilities would also be a step in the right direction. The problem with these woke posers is they always go for what sounds the most radical, regardless of the harm it may cause. That's where it feels like it's by design because it's clearly possible to be on the left and come up with practical ideas. However, some people are incentivized to shut that down cold.

A lot of people who'd refused to vote for Trump in 2016 and 2020 wound up doing so in 2024 out of desperation -- and the fact that Trump had started no new wars during his first term (but Butler, Pennsylvania fixed that).

Woke 1.0 was designed to sabotage the same issues they're claiming Woke 2.0 is going to be about. So, don't expect too much from it.

Sadly, yes. We saw that in the results of the 2024 election.

Your right - there's nothing wrong with being "woke" in the way that you described it, and the way most left of center people view it. Unfortunately, that's no longer what "woke" means to the general voting public. They view it as something to be repulsed by and afraid of. Fox News, and honestly most of the main stream media, are very good at scaring the hell out of older, white, Christian people with nonsense. And those older, white, Christian people are the ones who always show up to vote.

To be clear, my political leanings are certainly to the left, and I guess I could be accurately described as "woke.* My problem isn't with progressive politics, it's about the laser like focus on identity politics that led to the whole cancel culture.

But wokeness was always about that. Some folks just bought into it, not realizing the scam.

Thus permitting the conservatives to sound "reasonable" when they pointed it out. The problem being that those conservatives always wind up sliding back into insisting that the rich should never be taxed, that middle class tax revenues being returned to them in proper governmental services is "communism," and that homosexuality causes hurricanes.

'Round and 'round.

@Frank Underwood your false equivalence between the current Trump regime (and his Republican enablers) and any current mainstream Democrat is out of touch with reality right now.

What Trump is doing to your court system, voter suppression, your Constitution, taxpayer owned sites/buildings/parks, relationships with allies, etc. is completely unprecedented. It will literally take generations to repair what you can.

Just wait for what's coming down the pipe......

Obama killed American citizens abroad, engaged in warrantless surveillance, maintained a kill list, suspended habeas corpus, took us from 2 wars to 7, built the cages that housed undocumented immigrants (which Trump received all the blame for,) deported a record 3 million people (approximately 75% of which were fast tracked through a nonjudicial process), etc. That's why I'm always stunned whenever people accuse me of making a "false equivalence." It's easy for me to expose how Donald Trump has trampled on the Constitution and his crimes against humanity, but for some reason, some people still want to pretend that there's a decent alternative. If only that were true.

And sure, Obama isn't the only Dem around. Of course, the last Dem administration increased the military budget, funded a genocide in Gaza, and funded a war in Ukraine. People at home didn't get universal healthcare because Biden vowed to veto it if it came across his desk. They didn't get a raise in the minimum wage like Biden promised because Dems let the rotating villains in Congress and an unelected parliamentarian kill it as planned. Instead, we got rising inflation and higher grocery and gas bills which have gotten worse as his orange predecessor started another war on Israel's behalf. People get caught up in a cult of personality when it's really about a continuum of suffering.

And yes, Trump's vain desire to be immortalized is out of hand, but the fact that he's able to throw his name on the Kennedy Center and knock down part of the White House to build his ballroom shows that the problem goes beyond him. There's nothing keeping him in check, and the Courts only seem to intervene after the fact. Of course, his truly worst impulses (like his war mongering and using ICE to terrorize people here at home) have roots going back to the Bush Administration and the war on terror. And as I pointed out before, Dem Administrations (most notably the Obama Administration) have used those expanding presidential powers to trample on civil liberties too. That's not a "false equivalence," it's a sad fact of life. I voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012, so he disappointed me as much as anybody. However, I had to take the blinders off eventually.

And as for voter suppression, the voters didn't even get to elect Harris to be the Dem Party's nominee for president. The way they pretended Biden was fit to run again until the last possible minute was disgraceful. Not to mention all of the discrepancies and outright rigging that took place in the primaries in 2020 and 2016. Some people try to dismiss this because they were primaries and not a national election, but how a political party's candidate is chosen matters. After all, it's supposed to be "country over party."

Getting back to woke, one of the interesting things to me is seeing how exclusionary many of these "inclusive" people tend to be. I keep seeing the right get all of the criticism for using scare tactics to turn people against progressive policies, but what exactly do we mean when we say "progressive?" When it comes to taxing the rich, ending the wars, and implementing universal healthcare, the establishment Dems attack "the far left" and "socialists" just as much as the right." Where establishment Dems and the right disagree is on issues such as gender affirming care for children, and I don't consider that progressive (If you're an adult, do what you want). I know other trans people who feel the same way that have been shunned by many in the community. It should be possible to simply have a difference of an opinion, but as I said, many self-proclaimed woke people tend to be pretty exclusionary. People on the right have sarcastically joked about the "tolerant left" for ages, but there's a grain of truth to it when it comes to the woke.

Another reason I don't put all of the blame on the right is that many Dems (including Obama and the Clintons) didn't even support gay marriage until the late 2000s. Bill Clinton was a Dem, yet his administration did "Don't Ask/Don't Tell," as well as "The Defense of Marriage Act." He also helped gut welfare, and Hillary said welfare recipients would "no longer be deadbeats." Wow, how woke of them. Sounds like something Reagan or Bush would have dreamed up. But who knows, maybe I'm making another false equivalence.

I'm merely using the definition of the word woke...that is until the right weaponized it and made it the apparent root of all evil (the carrot on the string so to speak to hide the real corruption and takeover intent)
Those crazy beliefs can somehow be overcome and Republicans can be perceived as credible candidates but Dems can't overcome woke????
The establishment Democrats did the exact same thing in reverse for the same reason! Dems hid behind the woke agenda to hide their corruption and ill intent, so they would basically have to overcome a failure of their own making. Sure, the Republicans put fuel on the fire, but the Dems added the logs. Now you have AOC apologizing for "woke 1.0" because she knows the public is fed up with the phony virtue signaling and identity politics nonstop. That's what people mean by "woke" (not legitimate social justice issues).

Standing up for the rights of marginalized groups is noble, but being "woke" these days means to virtue signal and distract from the lack of polices aimed at ending the wars and helping the working class. That's why you had Biden hosting topless trans activists at the White House, gender affirming care and trans athletes becoming hot button issues, and the weaponization of identity politics. For example, the woke will call you a racist and a sexist for criticizing Kamala Harris's policies. That's why it's not taken seriously.

Wow, so it really is true that Trump could shoot and kill someone in the middle of Times Square without any repercussions. Instead, it would be...what about the Clintons, Obama and Biden who're just as guilty because they gave tax breaks to the bullet manufacturers? SMH

The 'establishment' is so deeply dug into the government control levers....but shouldn't it still matter if the President at least exhibits some shred of human decency, empathy, ability to unify, be respected worldwide and be able to speak coherently at the very least??

Focusing on ridiculous dog whistles like woke, communist, etc. isn't remotely helpful. People know how to end mass illegal immigration and the billionaire puppeteers. However, only a tiny percentage of people have the ability and the intestinal fortitude to do it (no violence needed).

it's about the laser like focus on identity politics that led to the whole cancel culture.
Wasn't cancel culture the negative side effect of the MeToo movement?
It's possible that that negative side effect was hijacked by the same people who hijacked the Woke movement, the self-imposed spokespersons who became the public face and voice of the various marginalised groups despite the fact that nobody has asked for it. The incredible damage caused by these people has even reached the sensibilities of the most progressive countries in Europe.
It's when politics is taken over by an endless stream of intentionally controversial, sexy-newsworthy social media garbage. The celebrity cunts in their big mansions who always appear in the morning shows and podcasts, thinking they can speak for the man/woman/transexual on the street.

Nevertheless, regardless of how it all came about, a gender politics-friendly government is in itself not a real problem as long as it doesn't happen at the expense of bigger issues that affect all people. You need a strong foundation to fine-tune certain issues, you can't build castles on quicksand, and in that regard it's not difficult to imagine that many people including former Democrates are hoodwinked into thinking that Trump is the most sensible choice.

But if it's true that the faith in the Democratic Party has reached an all-time low then they are actually in a perfect position to make a positive comeback.
To stop being tone-deaf is a good start, to stop handing over ammunition to the opposition who, of course, will use it for their hate & fear campaigns would be even better.
Politics is not rocket science, and any politician with half a braincell should understand that the word "woke" has been tarnished beyond repair.
