A Ewing... is a Ewing... is a Ewing.

Jock's Ghost

Sue Ellen's famous quote fits in with the lead up to me watching Season 4 and the friction between Jock and Ellie. Ray is now a Ewing and despite her saintly behaviors, Miss Ellie is acting like a child and her resentment towards Jock is out.

Does anyone know if the storyline was going to have Jock and Ellie divorce? Had they planned that far ahead, especially with Jim's illness slowly creeping in this season? The more episodes he's in sitting down, you can tell he gets more ill.

In this instance Miss Ellie had every right to feel resentful. Jock and his secrets were coming back to bite him. First Amanda then money in the trustfund for Ray without consulting with Miss Ellie as well as Takapa.

It was definitely Jock and Ellie's turn for some dramatics in their marriage but I don't think the divorce would have been a thing even if Jim wasn't poorly and I would hope not.

Those last episodes are a hard watch with Jim looking so ill. He was a trooper though and kept going for as long as he could bless him.

I certainly hope not. That would’ve been awful! I did like the drama involved with seeing them separated that season though. It was quite different to see them in that light and always bickering. The performances of all involved had me believing a divorce was actually possible but I would’ve still expected a reconciliation the next season at some point.

Had Jim not been sick, they would have pushed the fight to season's end. During the Finale, they would have reunited.
I hate this season, poor ole Jim is sick. He went from his huge strapping self to sitting all the time, reading his lines from cue cards. He later has to wear a wig and his face gets all puffy by the time of the make up. Poor guy.

Wasn't it a Ewing is a Ewing is a Krebs? My memory may be inaccurate, but your point is good.

It’s hard to watch, but I admire his ability to keep working despite knowing the inevitable. I’ll give the man credit because I’m not so sure I could’ve done the same thing under those circumstances. He was tough right up until the end.

I was aware of the slight error in the quote and didn't like to correct it as I assumed @Jock's Ghost had added Ewing instead of Krebbs deliberately. Ray was a Ewing after all and much more a Ewing. Adding Ewing on the end seems far more apt.
I think Sue Ellen's point was specifically that Ray was tarred with the same brush. Just saying Ewing a third time wouldn't have been so clear or dramatic.

Oh yes I know what was said and how it was said. I was making reference to the post title. Great quote coming from Sue Ellen! Could have been the only ever subtle nod to their one night stand too although she did used to warn Pam about Bobby being the same as JR deep down and now she was including Ray.
I remember the scene very well.

Jim Davis, even with declining health, was still a formidable presence. Season 4 was a disappointing season, especially after Season 3, which was the best one IMHO.
And Jim Davis, even with declining health, was still far more watchable than the boring, disgusting Leslie Stewart (one of the worst full season characters in the show's history.
IMHO, The worst mistake that Dallas made was not recasting Jock Ewing, because the show's characters' interactions were never as interesting

And yes! A recast of JOCK should have happened. The character was too valuable to lose. He had a great send off, but just because Jim left didn't mean Jock had to.

Morgan Woodward who played PUNK was originally offered the part of Jock. For whatever reasons, he declined and suggested his friend Jim Davis for the part..... Had MW taken the part, Jock would have survived the series, the reunion films, and even the SEQUEL series as MW passed in 2019.

Agree completely. Dallas was never as good without Jock, although Seasons 5-8,10 were still strong IMHO
Steve Forrest should have been Jock, and it would have given BBG and Howard Keel good story lines, as opposed to being relegated to annoying
plot devices

OR Steve Forrest was Jock when he returned later on.

Jim tragically had no choice, he was terminally ill with a multiple myeloma of the brain. He didn't leave of his own free will, the poor man died of his debillitating illness.

Well yeah but technically JR's assessment of Ray was more accurate where he usually referred to poor old Ray as a half breed. He took great delight in pointing this out to all and sundry. Years later at a dinner with Vanessa, James Beaumont pointed out JR was just like Jock because he was his secret son! The shocked look on JR's face was priceless to see. :)

I'm pretty sure it was Cliff who said, "A Ewing is a Ewing is a Ewing." It was during the fight for Ewing Oil, around the time Bobby was pressuring the cartel over the Wellington oil field.

Sue Ellen said, "A Ewing is a Ewing is a Krebbs" just after Pam woke up in 'Return to Camelot' (not that I'm suggesting for a second that everybody doesn't already know that).
