Andy Murray has been voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for a record third time.

Murray, the 2013 and 2015 winner, took Olympic gold, claimed his second Wimbledon title and became tennis' world number one in a remarkable 2016.

Triathlete Alistair Brownlee was second and show jumper Nick Skelton third.

"It's been a great year for British sport and I am so proud to have been a part of it," said 29-year-old Murray as he accepted the award in Miami.

Well deserved, but at the same time one cannot help but wonder how much longer this award can continue given the manner in which BBC continues to meekly surrender sporting TV rights. They'll soon have no sports left to broadcast.

I think the award should have gone to Nicola Adams. She has single handedly put women's boxing in this country on the map and to win 2 consecutive gold medals as a boxer, male or female, is an awesome achievement.

Disagree that he has won 3 years in a row. He's only 'British' when he's successful. It's a disgrace that Carl Frampton wasn't in the running.

Andy Murray and Personality are a contradiction in terms
he aint got one

My vote went to Mo farrah, the double double and an amazing athelete
what does this guy have to do to win it!
I never watched it tho, the BBC at its back slapping best

And why they feel the need for back-slapping I don't know, as I mentioned before, given how they are losing sports coverage hand over fist.

I can understand anyone not liking Andy, but I can't understand why someone would disagree with the public vote.

He's accomplished quite a lot in the last few years and he's also the first Brit to top the ATP rankings

If only that was true.

I think he has a great dry sense of humour and an interesting personality.

What does he have to do? I guess he needs the public vote.

There are lots of names that I think deserved to be on the short list. Chris Froome won the Tour de France and Anthony Joshua became IBF world heavyweight champion, both would have been worthy. Why is Jamie Vardy there? If an individual from Leicester City should have been on the list to represent their stunning Premier League victory, it should have been Claudio Ranieri rather than singling out just one player.

It wasn't that long ago that the award went to the Queen's granddaughter which I think completely devalued the prestige of winning. So maybe Andy Murray isn't a bad choice after all.

In terms of sporting achievement Andy Murray genuinely deserved to win, from that point of view I don't think there was anything wrong with selection processes.
