Why does it seem so gawd damned difficult for this generation to be willing to do something simple like boycott and demand change?
Because to them it doesn't feel like high-stakes issues, or they're not aware of it.
Those previous generations you mentioned knew exactly what they were fighting for, what needed to be achieved.

I admire your optimism and I prefer it to pessimism, it's just that the arguments made in this thread aren't terribly convincing.
I mean, waiting for someone to upload that hugely influential tiktok video is basically the same as "sitting on your ass doing absolutely nothing".

Rallies have happened thanks to organized protests going viral. We've seen that with the "No Kings" protests that took place across the country.

Organizing isn't the problem. Unfortunately, it's only amounted to performative activism so far. "No Kings" was a joke because it accomplished absolutely nothing.

As the saying goes, "power concedes nothing without a demand." Perhaps young people are afraid to make demands because they were raked over the coals for doing so. After all, many were blamed for giving us Trump because of their "purity tests" (which is another way of saying they had integrity and principles.) If people want change, they have to challenge the billionaires and politicians. The establishment and its enablers will always say that it's "not the right time" because they want to preserve the status quo forever.

I'm doing something. I grow my own vegetables or go to local farmer's markets, locally sourced butcher shops, buy Canadian whenever possible and am part of a grass roots movement to move away from conglomerate corporations (especially the ones who support singular political candidates). I can't even remember the last time I went to Wal-mart.

I actually like what my current PM is doing to move Canada away from giving the US preferential treatment for trade. He's diversifying and jobs are being created rapidly.

The U.S. on the other hand is rapidly in danger of falling from the top of the hill. Especially if they lose reserve currency status with their massive $40 trillion debt. Tik Tok....errr tick tock.

My grandpa grew his own vegetable garden too, but he also owned his own house. My other granddad lived on a farm.

For the majority of the millennial and Gen Z generation, home ownership has been out of reach as home prices and income inequality have skyrocketed (at least in the US).

Poor people living in overpriced apartments don't have many options when it comes to food sources.

The college students seem keenly aware of the threat AI poses to the job market, with many of them pushing back whenever tech giants say it's the wave of the future. Perhaps this will be what lights a fire under them to demand change, but who knows? I've felt like we were on the verge of a revolution before, only for it to fizzle out with a whimper.

Yeah, the housing market has become rich people selling other rich people houses. Their goal of "you will own nothing, and you will be happy," where they intended to rent over-priced houses forever (with entire neighborhoods bought up across the country and kept empty) hasn't really panned out for them as they'd envisioned. So, word is that investment firms that have done this may be deciding to dump all these properties back onto the market to sell, but the asking prices for these middling properties is so inflated today that no one can still afford them.

But there seems to be a weird intention on the part of the oligarchs to destroy things, not as a side effect but as a key goal. They seem to assume -- or suspect -- that the end result will benefit them is some ways.

Even the A.I. tech kings seem to be wary of their own product and the dystopia it may unleash between 2027 and 2030. Yet they're enthusiastic about it too.

When Peter Theil was recently asked if he had any religious beliefs, responded, without apparent irony, that he wasn't sure "but maybe Satanic."

What's not to be optimistic about with that?

I've said this before but eating healthier is surprisingly cheaper than eating processed junk. You don't have to grow your own. Even supporting local, works out cheaper.

There's just so much more fiber and protein in healthier options that you eat less. I also don't miss refined sugar when I use honey or maple syrup instead.

Homes aren't affordable here either for people in their 20's without help from parents now (since covid price hikes). However, I think I could easily be happy in a tiny home. I'm rapidly becoming a minimalist (as long as my dogs have a spot to roam freely). I think the younger generation is too...tiny environmental footprint allows money to be freed up for travel, etc.

"Not knowing" is never an option for human beings. The only way to know what happens is to see it through. Maybe that's how the Nazi ideology happened.
