Even when sitcoms were at the top of their game as soon as they move them to a different area/abroad they lost a huge chunk of what made them popular, even for 1 episode - certainly the movie versions of all the 70's sitcoms were hugely lacking their TV charm
Only a few shows have managed it - Only Fools, One Foot In The Algarve & Absolutely Fabulous, that I can think of.
Fawlty Towers is set in a Torquay hotel and has a varied cast of characters - that's what made it Fawlty Towers - having Basil on his own with a new team just won't be the same.
I would watch the first episode and hope it would work, but it's a very dangerous idea in terms of it's core audience of fans.
It;s like when Golden Girls became The Golden Palace....Oh how bad that was!!!
John Cleese once said he had an idea of a FT film, with Basil, Sybil, Polly and Manuel all flying away on holiday together and getting hijacked. That may well have worked back in the day, but still wouldn't have been FT.
Also, a laughing sountrack works for sitcoms, when they put it on film it changes the whole concept.
