Let me shout to someone I've not seen get a lot of accolades as he should is Ken Kercheval. A fine actor that always delivered. Cliff was a unique character in that he would run of the gamut of hate, rooting for and laughing with/at. I like how they did the Cliff/JR antagonism. Cliff wasn't always the focus, but in the background and vice versa. Lots of lesser shows have a constant antagonist and it usually flames out of gets redundant real quick.
I was a little surprised they made him so mean in the sequel series. Not that it hurt anything, but it was a route I didn't see it going.

I liked Ken Kercheval a lot . Cliff was much more serious at the beginning, then became bigger and broader and more comical, and then finally mellowed toward the end. Ken got to display a lot of range.

I hated what they did to the character in the TNT series. I don’t think it was true to his character. Even when he was going after the Ewings in the original series, it wasn’t because he was a true villain. He wanted to avenge the perceived wrongs done to his father.

Cliff was an interesting character in the early years. It's easy to forget that he was smart and hard working enough to put himself through law school.

The best season! The look of the show is gorgeous. Why was Bradford May not appreciated by the powers that be? Perhaps his way of working wasn’t schedule friendly and maybe they got behind. But over 30 years later it still looks glorious.

I did a series rewatch about ten years ago and you can literally fly through season 7 as it’s so watchable. Episode after episode.

I vividly remember season 8 coming along afterwards and being, well a bit bored.

everything about this season is perfection. Everyone gets a chance to shine.

Fantastic television

I have to agree. It's one of my favourites. Season 7 feels like a true ensemble series with every character involved. I know a lot of people had issues with the Sue Ellen/Peter story but with every re-watch it grows on me. I'll never forget that scene when Sue Ellen and Peter thought they were having a private conversation; only for the camera to pan up to reveal JR standing on the balcony, his menacing gaze reminding me why no one should mess with him. Right there, as the screen froze, we knew something wicked was coming Sue Ellen and Peter's way. And it did, in the restaurant. There is a sweet spot in this scene when Sue Ellen comes to the realization the game is up. It's subtle, ruthless, cruel even. Everything was on song for Dallas. The writing, direction, lighting....everything.

when I went to Southfork I stood in the exact spot JR was and thought about that scene (although I know in the show that was actually the sound stage at that point)

I agree, his acting was superb for the many dynamic scenes he had. I also recall Cliff being more stable, self-made, confident in the early years. Once he had the suicide attempt, the doctor had said there could be brain damage and a change in personality. I think that gave Ken the green light to play Cliff to the extreme and back down, over and over. What a creative opportunity for any actor!

If Cidre had had the gumption to put just a few lines into the Cyntax Dallas after it became known that Pam was dead it might've helped his character.

Something like this. "My sister was married to a Ewing, she was in a car accident because of a Ewing & she ran away from Dallas because of the Ewing's! I may have buried the Barnes Ewing feud because of Miss Ellie when she was still alive but no more. I loved my sister & I won't rest till I bring the Ewing's to their knees after what they did to her!"

That would've helped make sense of why Cliff was so bitter toward the Ewing's in the Cyntax Dallas. He did it all because of Pam, even paying off the Doctor who tried to help her before she died. I could understand him being bitter towards the Ewing's after he discovered that she had died of pancreatic cancer not long after escaping from the hospital following the tanker collision. Cliff did love Pam very much, he might not have shown it but he did and I believe that's why he acted the way he did in the Cyntax Dallas. The grief of her death clearly made him unhinged & very bitter. Very sad. :(

Who was the character Louise, played by Mary Armstrong? Louise appeared in 17 episodes from seasons 6 to 8, but I can't find a photo of the actress (only another Mary Armstrong) that might help me remember her. Was Louise a waitress?

The only Louise I can think of would be Pam’s maid that worked for her at her house that she moved into after Rebecca died. The same house where Bobby would “die” at the end of season 8.
