It’s a long time since I’ve watched a police procedural with any regularity (early SVU and Third Watch being the last ones I was a fan of) but this caught my eye. I’ve watched the first two episodes and I quite like it. It’s reminiscent of NYPD Blue albeit not as gritty so far. Has anyone else watched it and what did you think?

I’ve just finished episode three and I like how the characters are fleshing out. I see that the show is getting a bit of criticism from real East New York residents about its unrealistic portrayal of cops in the area and then from cops about its unrealistic portrayal of community policing. I’m just here for the drama though and I’m enjoying what I’m seeing onscreen.

I know that it’s early doors but I’m wondering, if the show is a success, will we be seeing a Manhattan South spin-off featuring those cocky detectives that guested in episode two?

i think what people forget is that it's tv and anyone who expects a crime drama to be as realistic as they want it to be is kidding themselves, however i remember when ER started my mom who's now a retired RN watched it for years than at some point i'm not sure when she did stop watching it anyways, one thing she complained about was how fake the show was and how you wouldn't do this or that you'd do this and her being an RN i can understand why that would annoy the hell out of her but if i recall her telling me as time went on it got better meaning that the show as it was learning how to write for it and it's characters and so on and so forth got better at the medical stuff than it did when it started. my point is that with this new show who knows maybe it's the same thing? we all want cops who give a damn instead of giving us a George Floyd at least i think that's his first name? my apologies if it isn't. i do think there are some good cops out there but we never hear about those they aren't news.

than you have some good ones who don't speak up for whatever reason. hell Tom Selleck sorry about the spelling i recall him doing an interview where he was asked about the NYC cops in real life he was kinda vauge but he pretty much hinted at that he wasn't a fan. who can blame him? we all want cops like the Reagan family who give a damn but sadly that's not what we always get

I know that it’s early doors but I’m wondering, if the show is a success, will we be seeing a Manhattan South spin-off featuring those cocky detectives that guested in episode two?

Again, I may be reading too much into this but one of the Manhattan South detectives showed up again in the latest episode. He’s going through a divorce and is being transferred to a different precinct because his soon to be ex also works in Manhattan South. I’m presuming he’s going to end up in East New York (as Morales love interest) while the Manhattan precinct will be revisited as it’s set up for possible spin-off setting.

Yes, I’m possibly overthinking the spin-off possibilities and they’re just expanding the world that the characters operate in (as they have done by showing us Suarez’s family life). But given that CBS is home to the CSI and NCIS franchises, I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to spin something off if the show continues to be a success.

I see that East New York is now being described as a “bubble” series, with renewal still to be confirmed.

To be honest, I haven’t watched since the mid season cliffhanger. I was initially enjoying it but as the series went on, my interest waned a bit. There’s good characters and actors in there but some of the writing felt a bit contrived to me, particularly the community policing bit and Brandy trying to forge a relationship with the neighbours.

I'm expecting all three bubble shows to return, now that new drama True Lies is not doing good in the ratings. I haven't watched East New York, but it sounds good on paper.

East New York aside I hope Blue Bloods gets renewed for a final season. Eventually it should be over, especially as long as you can count on Tom Selleck, after all he should be in the closing scene of the show. Now that CBS has had similar success with Fire Country on Fridays as it did with Blue Bloods, Blue Bloods can finally be dispensed with.

I've always found Swat overrated, not bad a show, but nowhere near as good as it is trying to sell itself. I wouldn't mind if it continued, but I wouldn't be sad about the cancellation either.

East New York was on the bubble and not previously renewed. It certainly didn't help that the show has been on par with the canceled NCIS: Los Angeles at demos and young demos for the past few weeks.

I think the CBS fall schedule is pretty smart. Survivor and The Amazing are getting extended by a half hour each, so there's no need for a drama on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. anymoe. And on Sundays until the end of the football season, only drama repeats will air on or after 10 p.m., so that CSI Vegas will only be moved to its new timeslot with a short season in 2023. CBS knows how to save money.

As @Monzo said, it wasn’t actually renewed although they seemed to be trying hard to work out a deal for a second season as they were negotiating for a lengthy period of time over streaming / “stacking” rights before they finally pulled the plug. Had SWAT not been un-cancelled, it looks like it may have stood a chance. I saw an article discussing the possibility of East New York being picked up by another network but apparently whatever the logistics of the writer’s strike are, it means it’s dead in the water.

The writer’s strike had nothing to do with CBS’ decision.. The decision to reverse the cancellation of SWAT coupled with the wranglings over streaming rights is what got it cancelled by CBS. The writer’s strike just means they’d have difficulties bringing it to another network to be revived.

Because in all likelyhood the season will start at midseason so there's not really any need for "filler shows" like East New York. Nobody expects this strike to end soon.

someone said somewhere how the writers only put rehashed shit anyways they want more money to rehash old shit. movie wise it does feel like it in recent years since there isn't that much Original ides in films anymore, but tv i really wonder how much they even make to do another writer's strike? they can't make that little money to keep doing strikes
