I just this minute finished re-watching season one of new Who. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire season and am looking forward to starting the Tennant seasons.

I also ordered the last 3 episodes of the season before, with Christopher Eccleston.

That will give you a good picture of the final run up to the switch between Eccleston and Tennant. If you go back just two episode further--The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances you'll get to see two really well written and highly regarded episodes and they introduce a new character, Captain Jack, who turns up from time to time after that.

Jon Pertwee, but I also really liked my first Doctor, Peter Davison, and Colin Baker. Never saw much of the new Doctor Who to give an informed opinion.

Jon Pertwee is my favourite too. I really like Tennant, Colin Baker & of course Tom. I've a soft spot for both McCoy and Troughton. I really like them all but my absolute fave is Jon.
