Jack Coleman as Steven

Yeah, at the time he just seemed like a pale, stiff imitation. The character's integrity was already compromised (which is why Al Corley wanted out) and it continued with the re-casting with Jack Coleman.

People say Coleman was a nice guy and he grew into a decent-enough actor after DYNASTY. But at the time, he was too rigid (except in the right way) and uncomfortable playing gay.

Much later on, however, I realized what a self-righteous bitch Steven#2 was. I mean, he needed to be beaten with an oversized salami every day of his life, he was so obnoxious. (That said, I want to see Krystle beat the crap out of Sammy Jo in the foyer after her niece makes one homophobic comment too many -- especially after Luke dies, motivating Sammy Jo to ramp up her scheme to kidnap Krystle).

He didn't have one exchange with anybody for six years where he wasn't an indignant creepazoid.

Which is why I always like the idea of bringing back Corley's Steven#1 someplace in, say, Season 6 after it's revealed Jack Coleman is indeed Ben Reynolds, an imposter who may or may not have realized he was an imposter. A Steven-on-Steven dogfight ensues (not a porn) and Corley emerges victorious, Reynolds withdrawing from Denver entirely and moving into a lighthouse in Maine owned by his brother, Willard.

Krystle gives the real Steven one long "welcome home" hug..... or is she really Rita??

I'm glad that we got to see Jack Coleman years later on Heroes in a different genre, most Dynasty stars weren't so lucky to be able to do something completely different. In any case, his performance on Heroes convinced me that there is more to Jack Coleman as an actor than he showed on Dynasty - or he has simply learned a lot as an actor since then.

I like @Skanky Whore! 's idea and it would bring back Al Corley. A fun twist would be some character, maybe Rita, hires a private investigator to look into Adam because they suspect he really isn't the son who was kidnapped and want to blackmail him. The p.i. discovers in the course of this inquiry the truth about Steven instead.
Back to Jack Coleman, I never saw him on anything else, but I would like to just to compare performances. He was so obviously ill at ease on Dynasty it was hard to watch.

I didn't enjoy Jack Coleman either. Al Corley may not have been the second coming of James Dean but he left an indelible impression. Coleman had no substance.

Corley should have been brought back in season 6.
Steven got shot in the face in Moldavia , bandages off and there’s Al.
Perfect world Pamela sue returns (change back the painting ) forget those awful Emma Sams scenes at the end of 5 and real Dynasty is back.
Throw in Gordon’s idea of having Alexis gang raped in a Moldavian dungeon by guards, kill Claudia and Dex and the Moldavians and ditch fake Krystle and season 6 would have been great.

just view the scenes where Fallon supposedly was killed and look at Jack portraying grief.
Horrible the guy couldn’t act at all

Reynolds withdrawing from Denver entirely
That would have to happen before season 7 otherwise they would simply adopt him.
On the other hand....we'd have gay Steven and gay Ben. They could marry and he'd still be a Carrington (yes, the other Ben Carrington). And then there would be a storyline about Danny seeing Ben as his real father...oh the possibilities are endless!

Well to be honest, and fair, both actors played Steven how he was written. It's the same with both actresses playing Fallon. It's not fair to compare the performances, when both the replacement Steven and Fallon were not written at all like they were originally conceived.

I found it odd, they bring the Steven character back with a new actor.
After Blake has a nervous breakdown over driving his son away and when he’s found gets into conflict in about 3 minutes of being back home.
The guy (despite no physical scars, his face should have been disfigured, after all he was in an explosion at sea but this is Dynasty season 3) you would think Blake would take it easy on the kid.
Steven gets a roommate
A good looking guy his age who’s also gay and went the same route of marrying a woman blah blah
They’re just platonic friends (why it’s the same old story, he doesn’t go after Grant Goodeve but Claudia he has the hots for??)
Blake should have walked into Steven’s apartment and caught them in bed together with the baby in the next room.
That I could see why he would freak out like he did
“I’m Steven’s roommate and “friend” oh I hear your grandson crying for his bottle I’ll be right back”
Ahhh no come on
They bring Steven back just to continue his straightness it was pointless, especially with wooden Jack Coleman now in the role.
Steven’s sensitivity and love of literature and the arts GONE

In my alternative Season 8, Chris Deegan returns and is dying of AIDS, sending Steven into a flutter about his own health status -- he may never have slept with Deegan, but Ted Dinard (who was introduced to Steven by Chris) damn well did.

Steven's current squeeze (a Fallmont cast with someone else) is safe because of the condoms.

That's because Steven and Chris were supposed to be lovers. ABC did not want that (even thought they did not object to this storyline when the seasonal bible was written) but the Pollocks did not want to cancel their plans with the custody trial so they went along with it anyway. Claudia was added to the mix just to appease ABC. She was not supposed to return.

For me, back watching it on TV on original airings, this was a classic example of how homophobia was inseparable from many actor's portrayals of gay (or gay-coded) characters. Actors had to fight the perception that they themselves were gay or anything other than uber-straight. I used to (and still) groan loudly at Coleman's taking every. single. possible. opportunity. during interviews to proclaim his unassailable heterosexuality and often declaring how challenging it was to even portray a gay. In a more enlightened world, this would mark him as a lesser actor who needed to only portray characters like himself, but back then, it was viewed by many as an understandable challenge, and a mark of how "brave" an actor was. This was not at all unique to Coleman, but I always appreciated the way straight Al Corley didn't distance himself in a judgmental way from his gay character. He handled this very, very differently from Coleman in interviews, and I (and others) noticed this at the time. Actors could play rapists, murderers and mad scientists, but it was when they "played gay" that everyone needed to discussed how Challenging! Brave! Unprecedented in its Complexity! every gay role was.

Ironic, really, because Esther said that if Al Corley had remained with the role, they would have written the character with more "anger" -- when the Stevenbot was way more angry (and often with far less reason!)
