I admit that I used to find Trump to be a likeable asshole. His uncouth, unpolished demeanor meant that he'd cut the media and other politicians to the bone in hilarious fashion. He was like a stand-up comedian who was unafraid to tell the truth about how thoroughly corrupt the US political establishment is. I found it refreshing, considering how much politics is about ass-kissing. The problem is he became an
unlikeable asshole once he took office (and especially in his current term.) He's still the same uncouth prick he always was, but he's proven to be a swamp creature just like he accused other politicians of being. He's another war monger screwing over his base, and he has the gall to lash out at them when they dare call him out on it. Trump chews up his allies and spits them out once they're no longer of use to him. His entire presidency is one big, self-aggrandizing circle jerk. I can see why wealthy narcissists continue to support him because he's one of them, but I don't understand how any working-class person could continue to do so.
If it's #2 - the archetypal evil person - then there's no point in complaining and objecting. You cannot reason with this kind of person because he has NO intention whatsoever to improve the situation. Your agony and dismay are not symptoms, they are the PURPOSE.
I have dealt with this type of people and the only way to make it stop was to magically wish them out of my life. It's always worked.
That describes most politicians. The only people they want to "improve the situation" for are the people who are already well off.
What sets Trump apart is he seems to openly revel in it more than most. Turning American institutions into a memorial to himself is his way of rubbing salt in the wound.
You're right that it's futile to complain and object, but at this point, our voice is all we have left.
