Classic Soaps Love of Life returning as audio soap

I thought that this random bit of news deserved its own thread. 47 years after its cancellation, Love of Live will be revived next year as a scripted audio drama. It’s being led by the producer and writer of other scripted soaps, Haven Falls and Forever and a Day (neither of which I’ve ever heard of but must check out). A former LOL associate producer will act as consultant on the series.

I’m open to being corrected but I think Dark Shadows is the only other US daytime soap to date, that has had an afterlife in audio format.

The guy writing this is super passionate but I can't get behind his work. I tried to listen to Haven Falls and it was hard to get through one episode. The sound quality is different for everybody and some of the actors read their lines like they're just reading something for the first time. Having listened to some of the old radio soaps, the quality difference is pretty huge.

I also find it odd he's revamping Love of Life. I know he was trying to get multiple soaps and I guess this i the only one he was able to get the rights to. But then I wonder: how much does he even know about the show? And is there really a point in bringing it back at all after so long? It would have to be all new characters based on the actors ages.

It’s mentioned in another article, that outlines for how the show would’ve continued post-1980 courtroom cliffhanger, were recently discovered in archives at the University of Wyoming. It also says that producer Paul Sladkus (who worked on the original, and will consult on this revival) once stated that there were six months worth of story outlines drawn up for the show, post cliffhanger.

I’m presuming that the audio drama will pick up from the courtroom scene, but be set in the present day? Or it’ll be some sort of remake of the original? Whatever they do will have to reference the original, otherwise what’s the point in them acquiring the rights to it.

The whole thing sounds more like a "labor of love" project that the producer might enjoy but the general public would not be as interested. The show went out with a whimper in 1980 so I don't think any sizeable number of people are clamoring to know what happened next. But if the producer has the $$$ and the passion for the project, he has my best wishes.

I agree. The Dark Shadows audio dramas appeared 30+ years after that show ended in daytime but it is an exception, given the cult afterlife (pardon the pun) that the show has enjoyed. This, as you say, sounds more like a labor of love. I’ll be interested to see what they do with it regardless.
