Opportunities for Outrageous Displays of Wealth

In the original DYNASTY, the Carringtons and Colbys were supposed to be incredibly wealthy, and a complaint I've heard repeatedly on the issue is that the characters, particularly their surroundings, were never "rich enough."

What are some things that you'd like to see on the new show that would perfectly display just how lavish the Carringtons' lives are? For instance, how they do weddings:

I mean, DANG, talk about extravagance! An upside-down wedding cake serving as a chandelier? A 5 and a half foot tall cake layered and layered with candy flowers? A cake shaped like an actual castle with a water fall? And that one cake covered in candy-crystals (or at least I think they were candy, I'm not sure lol) that look like real jewelry?

Now THAT is what I expect from a Carrington wedding! Let's have junk like that on the show! :D

Personally I think this would be mistake. If the producers allow "junk like that," on the show then that wealth becomes the main player rather than "us" caring about the characters. This worked in the original series run however I don't believe the viewing public today have a tolerance for watching people drowning in dollars but still bitching about life's little challengers. For instance if they present a scene with Blake and Cristal marrying then keep it a low key affair with just close family members in attendance. On the other hand if Fallon were to marry for the first time then I expect that Carrington wealth to be on full display, but keep it classy, none of those God awful theme cakes from reality baking shows.

Good points, but I'd still like at least a *few* moments of outrageous displays of wealth. You even came up with a perfect scenario: Fallon's first wedding. Especially if she were getting married to Jeff Colby! Two people from two of the richest families in America getting married? Why wouldn't their cake be made of edible crystals? lol If anything, that would be foreshadowing of Fallon and Jeff's marriage being a farce: it looks like real jewelry, but its all fake.

The wedding in this case should be lavish but I'm concerned about the reboot. Are we truly going to see high production values on Dynastly 2.0 or just a cheap interpretation of the original. That's my main concern here. Of course Fallon and Jeff's marriage should occur in a traditional church with 6 foot flower arrangements, a fleet of black limousines. Fallon's dress could be by Vera Wang with a 20 foot train. I'd love to see some opulence - when it's called for - just don't overwhelm me with it in every single scene.

Well of *course*. It was never my intent for each and every single scene be opulent! Heck, even in the original show I thought there were some scenes that could stand to look grittier and messier. Like Sammy Jo's New York apartment, or other places like that. Some scenes and places need to look 'glammed-down'. But other scenes and places... yeah.

I think this is where my interest in Dynasty began to wane. You'll notice beyond season 2 most scenes were indoors, little wonder the characters looked pale. It was like the intent was to write whole episodes to take place inside complexes so as not to mess with Alexis and Kyrstal's perfectly coiffed hair. This is why I loved Dallas more than Dynasty - sorry Dynasty fans. The Ewing family (despite their wealth) were more grounded. Sue Ellen, Pam, Donna were perfectly happy meandering around Southfork in their jeans one minute and the next they floored you with their attractiveness at the Oil Baron's Ball.

I always liked it whenever the characters were outdoors with their hair blowing in the wind. :)

They shouldn't look like hillbillies going crazy after winning the lottery.
"Don't know what to buy anymore! Let's buy a cake!"lol

But Cecil should be as vulgar as possible, let him do the outrageous cake thing.

Another reason for Fallon and Jeff's wedding to be vulgarly decadent. :D

He should be as vulgar as a Bond villain. An indoors pond with piranhas or something like that and of course his house has to be bigger than Blake's because he wants to appear more important than his rival (but I still like the idea that he's in love with Blake and he could try to kiss him and then Blake will reject him - more anger and drama etc etc)

Its extremely ironic you should say that, because in my own Dynasty-esque story, my Cecil character (Simon) has a strange obsession with my Blake character (Clint) that could be misconstrued as sexual attraction. And yet that wasn't my intention at all, and it still isn't. Simon's obsession with Clint is because he sees the latter as a replacement for his long-deceased twin brother, with whom he shared an intense sibling rivalry (that their mother, who is both the Constance Colby character as well as a Mary Carson character, encouraged because she loved how her sons fought for her love). Simon doesn't know how to love anybody, even his own family members, without hating them.

But anyway, back to the main subject: I like the idea of Cecil always wanting to show Blake up in almost all aspects of life. Cecil is the perfect candidate for the show's regular villain, with Alexis being either The Dragon or The Heavy for him. But I'm not sure about Cecil being in love with Blake, but I guess that depends on the actors they end up getting. lol

No, Amanda and Prince Michael got married in a greenhouse. ;) lol Oh yeah, and the marriages of Jeff/Fallon, Jeff/Kirby, Fallon/Miles and Steven/SammyJo were all elopements. And Alexis married Cecil in the hospital, and then married Sean in... a hotel, was it?

So yeah, even soaps weddings can happen anywhere. X)

Blake and Krystle married at the house twice!, and renewed their vows there as did Adam and Dana and Jeff and Fallon were supposed to. On Dallas, everyone married on the bloody driveway. On The Colbys Jeff and Fallon married at the house. TV shows like to make use of their existing sets. I don't really mind it at all.

That cracks me up :lolling: With all their wealth you'd think a church wedding would have been on the cards, at some point. But I suppose the scene was set in case someone ended up in the Southfork pool, generally J.R.
