What does she mean when she tells Julie Gray that they were once both "working girls"? Is she saying what it sounds like, or did she mean they both worked at a hotdog stand when they were teenagers?

Thanks, @Toni!

Thanks to you for sharing.

BTT. I loved all those nuances from the early seasons. I think that "working girl" didn´t exactly meant the "oldest profession in the world", but well, take a look: Julie spent many years sleeping with her boss, Pammie left good old Ray for millionaire golden boy Bobby (whom she quickly married), and then, Garnet (who Pam had known for years) played with J.R. for a recording contract while sneaking around with Ray (too). It would have made a great "Valley of the Dolls" spinoff directed by Russ Meyer...

Pam used to work at the store before she married Bobby. I think she just meant that she too used to work a regular 9-5 job to support herself. Just like Julie worked as a secretary to support herself. They both came from working class backgrounds. They were not rich or middle class when they grew up.

it would explain why she was suddenly “best friends”‘with the glamorous and seductive Leanne “Amber” Rees in that one episode! They were old friends from the “Laurie’s girls” days, as Vice Squad detective Matt Henderson could tell us.

Was the “love nest triangle” setup that Leanne and Pam and that reluctant photographer pulled on the powerful but bumbling financier Ben Maxwell their first? Maybe not!

Oh I forgot Leanne from Hill Street! The first full season was really filled with girls from the wrong side of the tracks...How delicious, TNT Judith would have loved it...

The Barnes family were working class. Digger would go from periods of drunken wandering to sober hardworking at oil installations, Maggie brought up Cliff and Pam, living in that small apartment, once Rebecca disappeared from the scene. Cliff worked hard as a young man to become a lawyer, determined to hold the likes of the Ewing family to account, while young Pam hated the Ewings and was a vandalizer of Ewing property, which she got away with. Pam had jobs like she did at The Store before she married Bobby.

The Cliff and Pam dynamic flipped at the time of the TV series, where Pam marries Bobby and starts to see the Barnes-Ewing feud as childish, while Cliff gets increasingly bitter at his setbacks and starts hating the Ewings to obsessive levels, which even Digger called Cliff out on during Series 3 DVD. Digger said something like "I don't HATE Jock Ewing. I just want what's mine."

Possibly working girls as in working to improve their position in society?

I think Pam just meant they both had to work for a living, but in truth, they both used what they had to attract wealthy men to take care of their financial needs, so....

We hope!
