I saw original Dynasty, but I am not as nostalgic about it as the rest of you. I thought it was silly many times. I thought it was filled with soapy over-acting and childish behavior. And ridiculous 80s fashion - worst fashion decade ever! Original Dynasty was a soap opera, in every word. Just like new Dynasty is. I expected new Dynasty to be exactly what we got. And I like it.

Well, Dynasty did suck sometimes, but not because it was a soap.

I've watched the video with quotes from episode 4, and there was one thing that made me smile. It's when Fallon said "I hereby banish you from the manor!".

Sorry, that title belongs to the 70s, with all its browns and oranges. The 80s had its fair share of hideous-ness, but whenever I see anything fashion-related to the 70s, so rarely does anything look alright.

I can't stand watching a single episode of those telenovelas. I would need a pillow covering my eyes and ears to stomach it. They are incredibly bad.

Sorry, that title belongs to the 70s, with all its browns and oranges. The 80s had its fair share of hideous-ness, but whenever I see anything fashion-related to the 70s, so rarely does anything look alright.

I am not a fan of the color brown, but I think the 70s had some pretty funky clothes. Not as good as some of the 60s fashion though. BTW: the 90s fashion was pretty awful too. But nothing beats the 80s shoulder pads, 4 cans of hair spray, blue mascara and pink lips, puffy dresses mess. Just too much of everything bad combined into one look.

I don't know if that hurts my eyes or ears more. My eyes probably because all I focus on is the lips moving differently from the sound. I will never understand dubbing. Watching series in original language is a terrific opportunity to learn more languages - i.e. become smarter.

I agree with you 100%. Though watching just soaps in English (with or without subtitles) won´t make anyone smarter, if you ask me. You have to be more demanding, eg watch classic / thought-provoking / etc. movies, maybe just any kind of movies, whenever they are not about a superhero.

Anyway, there is nothing for better learning a new language than sex...That´s what Miss Piggy says.

In all honesty, the shoulder pads never bothered me. True, they looked bad on some people, but others could pull it off.

You must have seen way more 80s fashion examples than I have, cuz I can't think of any who wore stuff like that all at once... well, maybe Alexis, but she managed to almost always pull it off (except for the Season 7 cliffhanger; she looked like such a joke in that getup).

BTW: the 90s fashion was pretty awful too.

I'm trying to remember the 90s, and all I can think of is Meredith Blake from "The Parent Trap."

I like soaps, but I don't talk about it with people. The soap opera is the drama series' silly cousin. And the daytime soap is the primetime soaps' even sillier second cousin. Trashy, everyone sleeping with everyone (preferably if they are members of the same family), endless conversations stuck in a hamster wheel, slaps and loud fake kissing. Yet I watched The Bold and the Beautiful for 25 years. Disliked most storylines, but my favorite actors kept me coming back. I finally got out of the cycle when my favorite actress left.

So, yes, I think soaps can be really silly and I think that most actors are either stiff or over-acting at least now and then - and I could never see anyone in real life acting like the characters act. And that's why soaps are guilty pleasures. Not quality in any sense of the word - but they can be very addictive. I both love soaps and feel embarrassed for it.

My mother reads a lot of romance novels and Harlequin crap, and I'd say they are just like soaps. Not anywhere near quality novels because of the language, the stereotype characters and the standard storylines, but still: guilty pleasure (to some at least, I wouldn't waste my time on them).

You can find good and bad in every style and every decade.
These days I struggle to find clothes that complement/support my body, not that I'm so awesome but I usually know what looks good on me.

The low position of the back pockets on jeans, for example.

It makes the person who wears it look fat and unattractive.

The clothes should support the person, not vice versa, but most modern designers are completely clueless eventhough they think they're very cool and hip and all that.
Well, they suck, they suck big time.
Gimme those tight, bleached 90s jeans any day, you could walk into a crowded room and - bang! - have all eyes on your ass.

I think of soaps as an endlessly continuing drama. How good or bad it is depends on the writing and acting, but there is no rule that dictates that soap can't be brilliant within its own genre.
And what is critically acclaimed drama? Drama is people, people dealing with fictional issues. Many soaps choose to over-do it and create ridiculous and over-the-top situations, but again it's a choice, not a rule.
