Selena: The Series, as the title suggests, centers around Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla Perez, who was murdered around her business manager named Yolanda Saldivar in March 1995.
I remember watching Selena, the 1997 biopic starring Jennifer Lopez, a lot with my mother when I was younger. When I found the movie in the five-dollar-dumb-bin at Walmart, I was totally psyched and I had to buy it. There was a time where I had friends that were Guatemalan-American, and they were big Selena fans. We use to watch the movie all the time together and we'd spend hours listening to Selena's music, with her signature "Dreaming of You" being our favorite.
Anyway, I've been watching Selena: The Series the past few days on Netflix, which premiered back on December 4. It is a little different than I was anticipating, but it is still a good show. While it's not quite as Selena-centric I was personally would've preferred, it still has its strengths. It's really like a family show, nothing offensive or brash, but it's about the entire family, not just the titular character. There's a lot of flashbacks to memories from other characters, but that doesn't make it bad. It's just different.
