Nothing of much interest in last nights public overnight ratings, with Return to Dunblane winning the 9pm slot with 2.3m for ITV - I caught up on this this morning and have to say even as someone who dislikes Lorraine Kelly she was the right person to host given her closeness to some of the victims families and seemed far more 'genuine' than her Lorraine personality - I also really appreciated the fact the perpetrator of the atrocity wasn't named and only briefly acknowledged and the focus was solely on the victims. More true crime documentaries and dare I say dramas could learn lessons from the approach. I imagine being up against the James Bulger documentary on Channel 5 harmed this a bit due to overlapping audiences so it could do well on catch up.

Channel 5 have acquired the rights to Eggheads after the BBC 'rested' it in favour of House of Games - not sure where they're going to but it though. Maybe a 7pm slot?
The BBC have announced a lockdown live programme BBC News Special for BBC One at 7pm on the 23rd March to mark the first anniversary of the Covid lockdown, whilst this is exactly the kind of public service broadcasting the BBC should be doing I can't imagine the public rushing to watch it on mass, especially with such an early slot when many might still be cooking dinner/commuting/working.
Bemusingly to me The Wall has also been recommissioned for BBC One on a 12 x 45 run.

They should put it out at it's original time, even if that means it's competing with House of Games. That's where it previously found it's audience and when fans of the show are used to watching it.
The BBC are getting a habit of losing popular shows that are then snapped up by rival TV stations (Birds of a Feather, Bake Off, Sewing Bee, Neighbours).

I mean that's to be expected when they're a non-commercial TV station, they've got caps on how much they can spend for certain shows, and someone will be willing to outbid them for some shows. Also given one of those shows first left the BBC 23 years ago, this seems a bit claw strutching.

Great news. I've missed my Eggheads, and House Of Games burnt out very quickly for me. I just can't watch it anymore.
That would be the ideal for me as well, but I can't see it happening. 5:30-6:30pm is now established as Aussie soap time on C5, with the news either side, so it would probably have to be much earlier or an hour later than its previous timeslot.

Maybe putting Eggheads at 7pm could work, Emmerdale and The One Show are both begging for an alternative in that slot which BBC2 has never provided and C4 can't with the news. Not sure what they'd put at 7.30 though against Corrie, some sort of quiz or factutainment show?

Oprah interview could well threaten the PMs statement on 7 and 28 day. Could only see a football match, IAC, Strictly or Line of Duty beating either of these when the years out. Unless we get some left field breakaway show.

Death In Paradise two parter makes the cut relegating The Masked Singer and The Serpent.
Looking below the cut by some distance The Drowning did incredibly well for Channel 5 - staying above 5m for 4 episodes of the stripped drama. I wonder if C5 doing this kind of drama could force the main channels hands a bit to find more.

I must add that Death in Paradise's popularity is a complete mystery to me - I remember seeing early series and thinking it was the biggest pile of shite I'd ever seen on mainstream telly (and there's been some woeful stuff) - I suppose it's family friendly nature and relative mindlessness play in it's favour but I'll never get it.

Midsomer Murders being thrown to the wolves by ITV again, will be up against Top Gear and Line of Duty on the 21st March.
Meanwhile, they've brought new detective drama Grace forward a week in order to save it from that scheduling clash (was originally 21st March)
This reminds me of the latter day treatment of Heartbeat - deliberately engineering low ratings as an excuse to cull an otherwise popular show.

Saturday Night Takeaway not having an 'in studio' audience doesn't seem to be doing it many favours this series.
Whilst still the best rated show of the day last night it's lost significant viewership from the first episode of the series....
20th Feb - 7.3m Overnight / 8.5m 7 Day
27th Feb - 7.0m Overnight / 8.0m 7 Day
6th March - 6.5m Overnight / TBC
13th March - 6.1m Overnight / TBC

I thought Sewing Bee was still on the BBC, promoted to BBC One? I think Egg Heads had run it's course on BBC Two and House of Games is doing good business for BBC Two. Perhaps Egg Heads could have replaced Pointless on BBC One? Losing Neighbours was a blow at the time, but Doctors pulls in a bigger audience and is home grown.

Channel 4 unceremoniously dropping absolute bomb Strangers Making Babies after one episode.
Forewarned this isn't a cookie cutter surrogacy documentary btw - it's people meeting up with the sole intention of finding someone to have a kid with and 'co-parent' but not be in a relationship with. Bizarre and creepy.

It was up against Kate Garraway's documentary about her husband's Covid battle which I imagine got a large audience which otherwise might have gone to this show. Channel 4 should have given it longer to find its audience before deciding to pull it.

Unsurprisingly or maybe a little surprisingly given it's divisive nature the Oprah and Meghan interview breezes straight to the top of the 7 day ratings chart for the year so far, outdoing even Boris's big speech announcing the current lockdown. Can only honestly see a latter stages Euro match, possibly an Olympic event with a British star expected to win or another major news event outdoing this.
