Was The Colbys a flop?

I wonder in an alternate universe, if ABC had told the Shapiros and Spelling (and they in turn had told the Pollocks, Huson, and Bast) that "you have two years" what it would have been like.

Now that I have seen season 2, I will say that the show was enjoyable, and not a flop. Unfortunately, season 2 was reduced, from an image standpoint, by the stupid UFO cliffhanger.
I mean, for exemple, in France, they aired season 1, and waited more than a decade to air season 2 on a confidential cable channel... But us, Dynasty fans, all knew the UFO ending (the french press talked about it, and made fun of it)... I was not especially excited to watch zombie Fallon take a ride....

Yes, there was a marked improvement in writing quality with better plots. But I still think that the funniest thing is how Connie had a bigger role this year than when she was in L.A.

And finally, it was great. I mean, usually, writers tend to ignore a character when the actor has left or is fired. They did the total opposite. That's refreshing.

Steven came back! In the reunion! Dynasty did not ignore him!

Actually, it was Steven's real return since season 2. The Coleman reboot of the character was still ignored.

To prouve my point : Coleman's Steven and Blake had already resolved the gay thing and were in peace with it. But Corley's Steven still had not.

It has more episodes on DVD than Murphy Brown, which was a huge critical success at the time

True, but let's not forget that almost every sitcom is released on DVD, but how many soaps do we have? Knots, Falcon Crest and Peyton Place are still incomplete.
So it's not really a fair comparison.

ABC learned from it's mistake when Grey's Anatomy first spin-off Private Practice kind of flopped the way The Colbys did. They moved it behind Grey's Anatomy and it worked for a few years. The only difference is that GA never had a lead-out that really worked, while Hotel did a fine job following Dynasty. I'm also not sure if The Colbys would have had more viewers than Hotel, maybe for the first few episodes, but not at the end of the season.
