The Proud Valley (1940)
A seaman joins a mining community, where he must make a huge sacrifice when a disaster in the mine threatens everyone’s life. It starts kind of slow, perhaps even by 1940 standards, but the last half hour of the film is very exhilarating.

He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
A rom-com that tries very hard to position itself as the anti-rom-com.
A younger Ginnifer Goodwin here than the one I've just been watching in Why Women Kill, but she never stops being perky, does she? I think she's this generation's Sally Field.

The Road to Eternity (1959)

I didn’t realize this was the second movie in The Human Condition trilogy when I started watching it, so now I need to go back and watch the first movie. It’s basically about a Japanese soldier in World War 2 Era Japan and his struggles to cope with everything going on around him. He even becomes a Soviet POW at one point. It can be quite sad at times and I notice the entire trilogy is almost 10 hours in length so this might be a chore to get through.

The movie has an extremely detailed and opulent visual style, which reminded me of Alice Through The Looking Glass. And maybe the stories aren't that different anyway.
I think it's very well made, like a gay Christmas on acid, over-the-top glittery with a few eerie and few emotional touches. It also made me laugh a few times so I guess it was an all-inclusive event for me.

It's not a great adventure for kids because the main character doesn't take the viewer on a journey. The opulent Christmas world starts from the very beginning, even before she arrives in Christmas Tree Land or whatever it is. There's no contrast, it doesn't look funny or bedazzling to her. It's almost like literally stepping out of a Harry Potter movie and then into a Narnia movie.
Maybe it's a little too relentless to make the "wow" moments pop. It over-indulges, but it never stimulates. That wasn't a problem for me because I only watched it for the pretty shiny stuff, but without stimulation it never becomes part of the young viewer. There's nothing for them to do and it won't create any links or associations that could gradually develop into fond memories and nostalgia.
Clara is also too perfect and princessy for a misfit character, maybe they should have given the story to her brother Fritz.

I enjoyed it but I can see why it didn't became the smash hit movie it was supposed to be.

I' ve never seen Network (1976) but i've heard more than once that it told us the future on how things are today compared to than sadly. the last films i watched were the Lethal Weapon (1987-1998) films as i own them all on dvd. Fantastic Series and i love them all i think the one i've seen the most would be part 2 i think (1989)
and sadly they just do not make em like that anymore NO f... shaky Cam and that's how it should be ya know? cause i f... hate Shaky Cam and for those who don' t

know what that is, it's where the director shakes the camera so damn hard you can't tell what is going on and it can give you a headache. See The last Jason Bourne movie it had so much of it that when i went and saw it with my folks. i got a bad headache and my mom got sick

Old (2021)

Old_2021_film_poster.jpg

A group of people on holiday agree to go to a secret beach not knowing that once there they will start aging rapidly. I so wanted to like this film more but I veered from thinking it was just ok overall to it being a bit of a mess. Without giving away what is the secret of the beach, I felt the idea was interesting but the execution left something to be desired. I didn't warm to any of the characters and didn't care what happened to them. The film also had too many plot holes. It wasn't terrible but it could have been so much better.

Burnt Offerings (1976)

An impressive cast in a rather less impressive film that feels like a test run for various better projects such as The Shining and The Amityville Horror.

Everything about it feels horribly dated. The production values give it a schlocky TV movie feel. Quiet dialogue scenes feel at times like a bit of a chore and endless in a daytime soap kind of way. These are broken up by dramatic sequences that are intense and loud and shrill as only films of this era can be. And it all leads to a "what the hell did I just watch" kind of non-ending.

I can't tell if good editing is improving bad performances or bad editing is spoiling great performances. Oliver Reed and Bette Davis seem really good at times while at others Davis in particular seems to be phoning her performance in. Karen Black is an actress that I frequently find unintentionally funny anyway. The mobile face emotes fear or concern or whatever, while the delivery and body language make her seem disinterested and insincere at all times, almost as though she doesn't understand English and is reciting her dialogue phonetically without giving it any meaning. She's given an awful lot to do in this one, taking top billing over Oliver Reed!

The title makes it sound like a comedy, and I'm still not sure it wasn't.

I'm a sucker for movie posters with title cards in the tradition of the soapy disaster movies.

She's fascinating, like a B-version of Claudia Blaisdel.
But WHO is DUB Taylor?

I watched the trailer without sound and I think it looks somewhat intriguing (youtube doesn't have it, dammit).

It certainly is a very promising poster.

Ha ha. Yes indeed.

But WHO is DUB Taylor?

Well, in this film he was Walker: the toothless old handyman in the filthy vest who keeps everything "spick 'n' span".

Walker also had a bit of an attitude with the lady of the house who employs him:
Roz Allardyce said:
If your busy schedule permits would you mind taking the mirror out. It's cracked.
Walker said:
Ain't the only thing cracked round here.
Roz Allardyce said:
Old fool.
Walker said:
Grouchy old bastard.

Oh, that's a shame. I watched it on Prime if that's any help.

On the plus side I will add that The Chauffeur is one of the creepiest characters on film. He doesn't even say anything, and he's all the more chilling for it:

The Spy With My Face (1965)
The second theatrical release for The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Also not a particularly original premise - the old "evil twin with plastic surgery" bit - but they pull it off with the usual U.N.C.L.E. flair.
The placement of the additional footage isn't as obvious as in the previous effort but there's a shower scene which, although tame by today's standards, wouldn't have made it onto TV in the 60s.

Dub Taylor was Fireman Wally in the Casey Jones TV series and a familiar face in sitcoms of the 60s or so, but I'm surprised to see him get such prominent billing.

The film had a very small cast. Dub - along with Burgess Meredith and Eileen Heckart - had a cough and a spit in the opening ten minutes. After that the focus was almost entirely on the other four, barring the occasional flashback or funeral scene.

Grandmother's House (1988)

Another weird one. It feels like an episode of Degrassi Junior High gone awry. With Knots Landing Season 3-8 font for all the credits. And a liberal smattering of panpipes.

Candyman (2021)

Candyman_%282021_film%29.png

Stand in front of a mirror and say "Candyman" five times and you will summons him and he will kill you. That is the premise of this film which is a horror that is more than just a gore-fest but has a strong narrative throughout and has some genuinely scary and tense moments. Far from the best horror film I've seen but one that I enjoyed watching.
