I guess I can understand -- even if I don't entirely agree -- with the removal of the overtly critical "dislike/disagree" emojis.

But the removal of the 'optimistic" emoji is emblematic and says everything that's really going on here, bluster and subterfuge notwithstanding.

Yes, it's quite obvious that it's about people feeling personally attacked, or butt hurt, otherwise why remove the "optimistic" and "informative" ones? It's so silly.

I hadn't noticed that one was even gone, but I always find it to be kind of ... sweet.

It was viewed as "passive aggressive" -- and I'd be lying if I claimed never to have used 'optimistic' myself in that manner.

And for the same reason, some personalities want "informative" gone.

Do you like our Reactions?
Yes I do very much, I always use them.

Are they all clear enough, or can some be misread or cause offence?
I always thought they were all clear enough and didn't realise how many ways they can be interpreted until I read this thread.

Are there any you'd like to see given the axe?
I'm happy with the selection we have.

I use the 'wow' and the 'cool ' reactions the least but I still appreciate having them. I will sometimes use the 'cool' reaction as it makes an alternative to always using the 'like'. When I use the 'wow' reaction it fits in well if I've read a comment which is surprising or extraordinary.

Any previous ones that you miss?
Personally I didn't mind the 'disagree' reaction, although I can understand if others might have a problem with it.

The 'dislike' reaction sounds rude and needless to me. Even if you personally dislike someones comment its good to remember its their opinion and they have taken the time and effort to comment. I think it would be preferable to reply in words why you might dislike what is being said.

I always enjoyed the 'naughty' reaction. To me it felt like a friendlier way to show disproval. I I received the 'naughty' rating a couple of times and I couldn't take any offense because it genuinely made me laugh. I always found it amusing to see that rating.

I’ve been of the opinion that the dislike & disagree reactions brought very little to the forums, but always felt if the majority of members wanted them back I would be fine with that

This thread has been great to follow and I can see valid points from both sideswith a comment (below) from the-lost-boy that struck me harder than the rest.

Maybe I'm too sensitive, but dislikes would have discouraged me back then.

The majority of our members are familiar with each other and therefore I would imagine the disagree reactions would not cause too much of a stir as it’s plain to see who is happy and who isn’t, but the thought of any newcomer joining and receiving one or more disagree reactions could prevent them from posting further.

I have often read from members over the years speaking out how they lingered the forums until they built up enough confidence to join and participate. The idea that they then feel upset at receiving what they would perceive as a negative reaction does not sit well with me.

But in a real life situation I would say I don't agree with you and we don't really have anywhere to go there, then leave the conversation, that's not unreasonable. Why shouldn't I be able to express my disagreement? I found that when I would have to go on at length why I disagreed it riled the poster up even more and then it would derail the conversation so it wasn't about what it started out as, and instead became an argument. Why cant I just express that I don't agree and move on. That's how life works.
Lots of threads have involved disagreements. It's how they're dealt with the determines the course of the thread. I've had both constructive and unconstructive disagreements here. Sometimes the best you can hope for is an understanding of where the other person is coming from (though sometimes you get an ad hominem reaction instead.)

That's a good point. I pretty much know who I'm good with here and who I'm not, and they know as well. Any likes/dislikes on our end would be obvious.

Good post.

I do think its a good idea for the forum to be a little more alert about rudeness.
Some individuals are rude, confrontational, obnoxious and bullying, at that serves no good purpose.

All emojis can be interpreted as negative (and, of course, some are) or pandering ambivalent/passive-aggressive (and therefore negative).

And even openly-praising emojis may be deemed as sarcastic or not sufficiently sincere.

So perhaps we should either dump them all, or reduce the choices down to concrete death threats or legally-binding proclamations of marriage.

Oh okay, we can set a date for our wedding then!

Now we really do need the dislike emoji button back. :)

I think I've used 'disagree' once. I can't remember what the topic was but I had made all my arguments earlier in the thread and didn't feel that I needed to repeat them. I'm sure it was not my intention to be dismissive.
