The freedom of wearing shorts must be great although with your job could be a hazard like the posties!
At least you have the weather for shorts. Men here don't seem to mind any weather conditions. It's as if anything goes, shorts all the way
Most people I know haven’t ever even seen me in pants. I guess I only wear them for special occasions. As far as work goes, I can’t picture wearing anything but shorts here. I’m still amazed though that people work outside in them in your climate. Even I probably wouldn’t do that.
That's great! I obviously haven't got the intelligence to appreciate camp in a drama. Anywhere else is fine
I don’t mind it just as long as it’s not overdone, which I know is the definition of camp anyway but you know what I mean. I don’t mind my dramas a little over the top but there’s a fine line between that and being a complete joke and I don’t like crossing over that line.
You make your job sound so interesting and fun ( I bet it isn't all fun though) Would love to hear your elevator story, getting hit on and being locked inside properties and your broken bones, infact I would love to hear all of it!
Oh no, it’s not always fun, believe me!
Let’s see, being locked in an elevator? Well, it was a thunderstorm and I was in this three story building. The power happened to go out as I’m on the elevator (of course), so I’m standing there all alone trapped up on the third floor. Luckily it was a glass elevator and I could see out, which made it a lot easier. In the lobby I could see three women standing there and they were all looking up at me and telling me it was going to be okay and they were going to get me out. That was the nicest part, having people concerned about me as I’m waiting there. To tell you the truth, it was also a little embarrassing because the glass made everything visible to everyone and I felt like such an idiot just standing there with everyone watching me and nothing to do. Sadly I had left my phone back in my vehicle also. Anyway, after a few minutes the thing just started up again and I was able to get out.
The second time was a little more scary. I was in an apartment building and it was a very tiny elevator with no glass. The thing just stopped and I’m ashamed to say I panicked. The elevator phone was working so I called for help. They called the fire department but I called back again ‘cause it was a very tiny elevator and I felt really enclosed. The girl on the other end informed me they were on the way. It was scary. But like last time, all of a sudden it started up again and I got out before they arrived. Fresh air never felt so good.
Getting hit on? You really want to hear about that? LOL. Okay, part of the job I guess. I will use one example of this house I go to.We’ve always hit it off. In fact, we hit it off instantly which is hard for DFF cause I’m notoriously shy at first. I mean I noticed very early on when I went there that she was hugging me and kissing me on the cheek, which I’m not complaining about of course. I just figured she was either very forward or whatever was in these packages must’ve meant a whole lot to her. Anyway, her house was getting totally redone at the time so she would ask me in to give me the grand tour. She’d give me sodas and offer me food. We’d chat for a few minutes but of course with that job I have to keep moving so I’d respectfully tell her I had to go. To make a long DFF story short, one day last year we’re talking outside her house and she proceeds to make my day. She starts saying the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. She’s telling me she thinks I’m the nicest person, she’s going on and on about my personality and manners, and she’s even telling me I’m gorgeous. I suggested an eye doctor for the last part but she said her eyes are just fine and likes what she sees. She even told me I smell good and when she asked me what I’m wearing I told her it’s my own special fragrance called “Perspiration.” I think what really helped my cause though was the fact that she wanted a dog and her son and husband were telling her she couldn’t have one. That didn’t make sense to me because her son didn’t even live at home anymore so I told her to get a dog if she wants one and her husband and son would pick up the pieces one day and move on with their lives. (I’m proud to say she listened to me and now has a puppy). Regardless, as you noticed there is a husband and DFF has the unfortunate flaw of being a gentleman so her and I have remained good friends and strictly professional, but I have to say it is nice to go to a house and be the center of someone’s affection for a few minutes. I am the center of her universe when I show up (LOL) and til this day everything including the dog, the husband and children get cast aside while I’m there. It’s a nice feeling.
Broken bones? Let’s see, I’ve broken bones in both wrists but continued working through the pain like an imbecile. I broke one when slamming a sliding metal door shut too hard on my truck, and I broke the other one on a different door on another truck. I know it sounds crazy but those doors are very unforgiving and picture opening and closing them 100 times a day. It takes a toll. I had to learn a special way of doing that to put less stress on my wrists. Those were the two most serious injuries I’ve had. I’ve also sprained both ankles, hurt my shoulder, sprained my back twice, but luckily never anything that made me miss work. And right now I’m dealing with a hyperextended right elbow.
Getting locked inside properties? It’s happened more than once. One time I went to this house and they had a gate leading into a courtyard. The gate was open so I walked in, but somehow the gate ended up closing behind me and it was electronic. I couldn’t get out. No one was home. Luckily for me someone pulled up and I was able to leave. She was laughing and it was kind of funny.
Another time I went to this house and they had a gate, but it was too narrow a driveway to get the truck up there so I decided to park outside the gate and walk. I rang the call box and they let me in. I walked up to the house and made the delivery and as I’m walking back to the truck I notice the gates are locked. I’m locked in and the call box is outside the gate so I did the next best thing. Furthermore no one was home as they had let me in from their phone I’m assuming. I had to climb over the fence to get out. Somewhere there’s probably a video of it.
My job sounds so boring in comparison and trust me I hate using the word boring.
Jobs I've had in the past have been a bit more interesting especially when I used to care for the elderly. So many characters, so many stories they had to tell. God they were fascinating. I would sit ages with them listening to their tales.
Sometimes I would rather have a boring job to be honest. I would bet your stories of caring for the elderly aren’t boring though! I’m sure there are some fascinating tales to tell there. Was it a job you enjoyed doing? I’m sure it had its drawbacks as well.
I was also a mimic back then and had so much fun copying certain ones. I never ever intended it to be rude, I just love voices, accents and phrases (some I still use today) My behaviour would be frowned upon now and I'd be called all sorts, but I know I wasn't rude. I just appreciated them and enjoyed bringing humour to a very hard, stressful, thankless job.
I feel we have to laugh, especially at ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with mimicking someone as long as it’s done in good taste. Yes, things are different now than when we were growing up but we need laughter now more than ever in my opinion.
