Trump safe after being rushed off rally stage when possible shots fired

Story by Olivia Rinaldi

Former President Donald Trump was rushed offstage after possible shots were fired at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, today.

The Secret Service says Trump is now safe, and his campaign says he is being checked at a local hospital.

Reporters heard numerous shots and Secret Service rushed the stage. Video captured by CBS News shows Trump touching his ear and then crouching to the ground. Some blood could be seen on his face.

Trump was taken away in a motorcade. He held up a fist as he got into the SUV.

"Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. "This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available."

The Trump campaign said in a statement, "President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow."

A White House spokesperson said that President Biden "has received an initial briefing on the incident."

Donald Trump Jr. tweeted a photo of the incident and wrote, "He'll never stop fighting to Save America."

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, considered a possible choice for Trump's running mate, posted on social media, "Please join Kathryn and me in praying for President Trump, his family and everyone attending the rally today."

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, another potential VP candidate, tweeted, "Praying for President Trump and all those attending the rally in Pennsylvania today."

Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, also on the VP shortlist, wrote, "Everyone join me in praying for our President Trump and everyone at that rally. I hope everyone is ok."

There are stories that a couple of bystanders were hit, and the shooter might be dead. (It doesn't sound like this is verified).

Again, the reports are that the shots came from far away.

Wow. This is shocking but also not. It feels like something like this was inevitable.

This is ironically a great thing for his campaign, which probably wasn't the shooters intention.

The shots supposedly came from a rooftop, one outside of the venue.

A couple of bystanders may have been killed.

Obviously someone with shooting experience who loathes Trump. I've been saying this could happen for 4 years now. I shouldn't be surprised, but of course when it actually happens, I do get surprised anyway.

Political violence is becoming more and more common again. I am thinking of that MP in Britain who was murdered just before the Brexit referendum. The attack on Salman Rushdie. The murder of a psychiatrist during the political week in Almedalen, Sweden where the intended target was one of the political party leaders. And the attemped assassination of Slovakia's Prime Minister Fico. And Nancy Pelosi's husband.

Glad he survived. I hope everyone will tone down on the rhethorics after this, but I doubt it.

Wow. Some Democrat supporters really need to learn that sometimes there's such a thing as not having anything nice to say - don't say it at all. Defusing these sort of situations should be priority but some people are just complete narcissists.

"If you really want to see something that's sad, take a look at what happened ........"

---Trump's words just as the shots rang out.

Right now it feels dangerous to be a Dynasty fan. Because we know how to connect the dots...we have become too big and too smart.
I've been censored elsewhere for posting about Alexis's gubernatorial assassination attempt! We're truly onto something here. It all just makes sense.

This is just pure "whataboutism".

C'mon you can do better.
It wasn't not "whataboutism" it was a statement of fact.

But OK, I'll do better. When Paul Pelosi was almost almost assassinated, Trump mocked him. When Trump was almost assassinated, everyone rightly condemned the act of violence. People, be less like Trump.

It reminds me of Alexis's shooting in "Dynasty". Just after the assassination attempt, she was told that her popularity was rising and she had some good chances to win the election (well, she eventually did not).

"Whataboutism" is a term I've heard you use as well. Personally, I see nothing wrong with calling out the partisan hackery of hypocrisy and double standards.

But OK, I'll do better. When Paul Pelosi was almost almost assassinated, Trump mocked him. When Trump was almost assassinated, everyone rightly condemned the act of violence. People, be less like Trump.
Are you seriously suggesting that Dems aren't as unhinged as Trump? Dems mocked Rand Paul after he was attacked by a neighbor. Calls for Trump to be assassinated have increased since SCOTUS decided on presidential immunity. I saw a video a few days ago of actress Lea DeLaria saying Biden should "take Trump out." Of course, she made the obligatory comparison of Trump to Hitler. There are partisan extremists on both sides of the aisle who have violent fantasies they openly want to act out on their opponents.

The irony of politicians who have cheered on and enabled the slaughter of 16,000 innocent children in Gaza now condemning the gun violence against Donald Trump.
I'm not sure which politicians you're referring to specifically, but Biden's one of the politicians that condemned the gun violence against Trump.

Considering he also "cheered on and enabled the slaughter of 16,000 innocent children in Gaza," I assume you want people to be less like Biden too just to be consistent.

Although I kind of agree with sher. All of the candidates ignore -- or promote -- the slaughter in Gaza, where nearly 200,000 civilians had been murdered.

Anyway, always pay attention to the very early news reports -- some in the crowd said shots came from more than one direction (which could be a perceptual error) and one of the networks had on a federal agent, a former Secret Service guy, who expressed his surprise that the "higher elevations" weren't monitored -- like rooftops -- because that's ordinarily a priority when providing security for such an event.

This is ironically a great thing for his campaign, which probably wasn't the shooters intention.

Oh, who's to say... Have you ever seen Tim Robbins' film BOB ROBERTS?

Also true.
