Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, the alleged shooter. A good student. A registered Republican yet one who donated to progressive causes.

So, does the plot thicken?

a federal agent, a former Secret Service guy, who expressed his surprise that the "higher elevations" weren't monitored -- like rooftops -- because that's ordinarily a priority when providing security for such an event.

Very odd to me in this day and age if in fact true. You’d think with all the shootings that have gone on over the past decade in schools, churches, at concerts, other public places, etc. that a presidential candidate would be safe. One witness is now saying that the gunman was seen moving “from rooftop to rooftop” before the shooting. That’s completely mind boggling to me if it’s true.

"Whataboutism" is a term you like to throw around a lot. Personally, I see nothing wrong with calling out the partisan hackery of hypocrisy and double standards.

Are you seriously suggesting that Dems aren't as unhinged as Trump? Dems mocked Rand Paul after he was attacked by a neighbor. Calls for Trump to be assassinated have increased since SCOTUS decided on presidential immunity. I saw a video a few days ago of actress Lea DeLaria saying Biden should "take Trump out." Of course, she made the obligatory comparison of Trump to Hitler. There are partisan extremists on both sides of the aisle who have violent fantasies they openly want to act out on their opponents.

I'm not sure which politicians you're referring to specifically, but Biden's one of the politicians that condemned the gun violence against Trump.

Considering he also "cheered on and enabled the slaughter of 16,000 innocent children in Gaza," I assume you want people to be less like Biden too just to be consistent.
I'm not suggesting anything about the Democrats or Biden, both of whom I never mentioned in my post. I was actually thinking about Sir Keir Stamer, although my comments could apply to a large number of politicians. Stamer tweeted "Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack" It struck me that those words could apply to Israel's genocide in Gaza, which Starmer has not only refused to condemn, but believes "Israel does have that right" to respond the way it has.

Calling out the inconsistency of condemning political violence that lead to Trump being shot and while supporting, including by supplying with arms, Israel to kill 16,000 children might be "whataboutery" to some people, but I think it's hypocrisy about an appalling massacre of innocents which was avoidable.

Oh, it's at least that.
It's sad but correct to point out that the figures given for those killed in Gaza are probably an under estimate. Who knows how many more are buried under the rubble.

Yes it's right to condemn the person who fired shots at Trump but equally it must be right to condemn the slaughter of innocent people in Gaza.

Since you support Biden, I wanted to know if he was one of the politicians you were calling out for hypocrisy. He's an enabler of genocide in Gaza and called out the shooting.

As for the Democrats, you said everyone condemned the gun violence against Trump. The truth is extremists who support the use of violence exist in both parties.

I actually agree with you completely here (shocking, I know.)

My point wasn't that I think you're wrong for calling out inconsistent viewpoints. In fact, I think you made a fair comparison and were right to do so.

The point I was driving at is that I've heard you accuse others of "whataboutism" on many occasions for doing the same thing.

Is this real?

Jesus. None of this "I'm just a patsy!" stuff, huh?

Come to think of it, what does "You've got the wrong guy!" even mean?

He's a registered Republican who hates Trump and the Republicans, then asserts we "have the wrong guy" in a YT video we're all supposed to see after he's dead??

Was he a willing fall guy happy to sacrifice himself in some greater entity's conspiracy, or is he indeed a lone nut looking for post-mortem infamy by attempting to be enigmatically contradictory, suggesting that he's the "wrong guy" (an enthusiastic patsy) so we'd wax conspiratorial about him long after he's dead?

Whatever democrats will or won't do from now on ... with this assasination the election was decided.
That guy lost his life and killed innocents for the complete opposite of what he wanted. What irony.

Yes, perhaps the aptly-named "Crooks" (in the plural) was part of a pro-Trump plot, a sharpshooter with his AR15 intent on grazing the former-president on the ear, willing to sacrifice his own life, making an "I hate Trump!" video, asserting that he's "the wrong guy!", so we will infer he was part of a leftist plot to kill Trump when he was really part of a rightwing plot to wound Trump and thus swing the November election in his favor.

Now that's I've typed it, I'm convinced that that's what actually happened.

It's more West Fork than Cedar Abbey, however.

This is where my mind went too when I heard that Trump had only been grazed. It all feels a little too perfect. The fact that it happened as Dems are embroiled in a contentious debate over what to do about Biden is also... interesting. That already gave Trump an advantage, and now his image is being bolstered yet again by an attempted assassination.

And the lack of security (which even a former Secret Service agent found odd).

Conspiracies are not always theories. Although we can only guess which one might apply here (if at all). But the 'somebody-let-it-happen' trope seems strong in this one.

Maybe he was acting alone. But maybe he was willing to die as part of someone's scheme to guarantee the sympathy vote for Trump. Especially when his YT video asserts he's the "wrong guy" (leading us to wonder if there were others) and that he "hates Trump and the Republicans" (leading to wonder if there were others and that they were Democrats) even though he was a registered Republican (who'd only donated to progressive causes).

I mean -- pheww! --- it's only been 16 hours and I've already given myself a headache!

The irony of politicians who have cheered on and enabled the slaughter of 16,000 innocent children in Gaza now condemning the gun violence against Donald Trump.
Political violence is the real threat to democracy no matter what your political beliefs are. The mentally ill 20 year old who tried to kill Trump was raised with Kathy Griffin's disgusting beheading "joke" and all the dangerous the world will end if Trump gets elected rhetoric.

As someone who used to behave as a rabid dog on this very forum using every opportunity to spew over-the-top melodrama regarding everything Trump, yesterday’s assassination attempt is a reminder of that embarrassing toxicity that had driven my past political posts, which I have regretted since about 6 months into Joe Biden’s tired sitcom of a presidency.

One should be able to disagree on policy without resorting to histrionics and dehumanization and participating in a collective “oh my God if he wins, it’s the end of democracy!” hysteria (fueled by the biased legacy media machinery), including over-the-top comparisons to the Nazi monster who had millions of people murdered (yes, I’d posted some of the Hitler memes myself, guilty as charged).

But it’s all just a scam to ensure up-for-grabs votes (and if you’re gay or black they think they’re entitled to them by default). Sadly, it’s playing with fire as it can lead to a tragedy.

A similar event took place 2 months ago involving our Prime Minister here in Slovakia. Though a leftie himself, he’s a conservative (therefore often mistaken for a right-winger by the Western media), whereas his opponents are US-style woke lefties who also love to hyperventilate and had painted him as the Ultimate Evil / Hitler prior to the assassination attempt that sent 4 bullets at close range into his stomach.

Does that include Trump and his friends not-so-obliquely encouraging Hillary's assassination? Or do only pie plates smeared with ketchup count?
