Who will replace Biden as the Democratic nominee?

Republicans may be a "viable option" for all the reasons you listed. Trump, however isn't - at least not for me.

Harris would have never been my pick, but I will hold my nose and vote for her, same as I did Clinton and Biden. The Dems choose their candidate, rather than letting the voters truly choose, and they never seem to pick a decent one.

Harris has a strong record on women's reproductive choice, which is very important to me. She also seems to be more in the "middle" of the middle East conflict. She doesn't have a strong record when it comes to campaigning, but since her last go round she has logged four years as VP, so her skills may have improved.

For me, the choice is all about SCOTUS. I have seen the judges Trump appointed and he is promising more of the same. With Justice Thomas openly calling for challenges to same-sex marriage, birth control, and segregation precedents, we cannot afford to let Trump out even one more judge on that court.
All of the reproductive rights and liberal SCOTUS justices in the world won't do you any good when you can't afford to put food on your table, gas in your car, the medicine that you need, or get raped and murdered by a criminal animal who entered the country illegally on Harris's watch.

He's not viable for me either. I plan on either not voting at all or voting third party (probably for Jill Stein.) Not that my vote matters, as I live in the blue state of Washington.

However, after the shit show of the last four years (and the scandal over Biden's mental health and subsequent replacement,) I get why people are giving Trump another look.

I get that, and I respect your decision. I don't think this choice will be easy for the vast majority because there are so many, many things to consider.

The vast majority of violent crime in this country isn't committed by "illegal animals." That's nothing more than a campaign ploy to play on the fear, anger, and blatant racism of a certain group of voters. Frankly, that's exactly the kind of rhetoric that makes Trump so disgusting to about half of the voting public.

As to the economy, yes, prices have increased, but the US is in much better shape than the rest of the world and things are starting to improve already.

I would honestly consider a "protest vote" or a no vote of I lived in a safe state (either way). Unfortunately, I am in a purple swing state and every vote counts. A vote for anyone other than Harris (or whoever the Dem nominee turns out to be) is in reality a vote for Trump.

Sadly, that's true. And while I think it's important to have a record of people entering the country, I don't believe they should all be demonized. Many just want a better life.

Immigration is a complicated issue all around. It's not just about securing the border, although that's part of it. The other factor is US foreign policy, which has largely contributed to the immigration crisis. Of course, most people only focus on the effect. Undocumented immigrants are pawns caught between various competing agendas.

The Nation did an excellent article on the subject in 2017:

As his price for not deporting roughly 800,000 “Dreamers” who came to this country as children, Donald Trump demands an escalated war against immigrants, topped by his nightmarish 2,000-mile wall along the Mexican border. Democrats have said no. Whether or not some sort of deal is eventually struck, the country will remain deeply divided over undocumented immigrants from the south.

Unfortunately, though, that debate is entirely focused on domestic policy—how to treat the undocumented after they have arrived. Democrats, thinking Latinos will vote for them, want the newcomers to stay. Republicans, fearing Democrats are right, want them sent back. Employers want their cheap labor. Workers fear their wage competition. The clash of these agendas further inflames simmering social tensions over racism, police tactics, and cultural identity, which in turn feed Trump’s reactionary base.

Lost in these US-centric arguments is the role of our foreign policy in creating the conditions that push people in Central America and Mexico to make the long, arduous, and frequently fatal trek north.

That may be, but people will likely be focused on whether they feel that improvement by November.

Biden is likely both as well (he's definitely the latter.) His crime bill is a testament to that.

Harris brought up his praise of two segregationists he worked with to oppose bussing, but looked the other way when he made her VP. So there's that.

What you are describing is not comparable. A court of law agreed that Trump was a sex offender and Trump has said numerous racist things, including saying Congresswomen of colour should "go back to where they came from" and calling African countries "sh*tholes". But as always, when it comes to criticism of Trump, your defence of him is don't look at Trump, look at Biden instead.

I'm not defending Trump; I'm saying they're both racist pigs who've been credibly accused of rape. Biden's own daughter said he took inappropriate showers with her.

And what hurt people of color more, Biden's crime bill and his work with segregationists, or Trump referring to African countries as shitholes? Not comparable indeed.

That said, Trump's guilty of separating immigrant children from their parents and locking them in cages. Of course, the cages were built by the Obama Administration.

Regardless, I don't support either of them while you keep making excuses for Biden. I can at least respect the people who voted for Biden/Harris strictly for pragmatic reasons.

I don't see myself as making excuses for Biden, I agree with him on some things and disagree with him on others but I think Trump is a more vile and dangerous individual and for all his faults, Biden is a far better President and for that reason I would always support Joe over the felon.

Biden said his support of the crime bill was a mistake, Trump has never regretted his racism. In the debate a few weeks ago he made a comment about "black jobs" which I assume he meant low skilled, low paid jobs so he still holds his racist views. I would choose Biden over Trump any day of the week on issues of race.

Thank you for that reality check on crime: it is a Trump campaign ploy to play on fear and racism- most of the crime committed in this country is committed by Americans- It is unfortunate Biden gets blamed for the economy when the entire world's economy suffered due to the pandemic, but as you point out, the United States is in much better shape than the rest of the world.

I wonder why many voters don't seem to care about the character of our president. Trump is just nasty, mean, making fun of the disabled, name calling- and that's just for starters. I find him absolutely repugnant as a person and as a president.

NC and PA delegates have already pledged to Harris. Pelosi has endorsed her and Schumer and Jeffries are expected to endorse her tomorrow.

Pretty sure it's game over. Kamala Harris will be th nominee.

When hasn't the economy been shit for anybody other than the rich? Certainly not this century. It didn't start with Biden, but it sure as hell didn't get better under him either.

Character does matter, and Biden has a history of lying, plagiarizing, promoting racist policies, and being a craven war monger. It's not like we've ever had great choices.

I can't bring myself to vote for either of them, but all the best to those that do. No matter what, the "winner" will be the wealthy elites and the military industrial complex.

Fair enough. I feel they're both far too vile to support or vote for, but I understand if you find Biden more tolerable.

Certainly. As soon as you tell the grieving parents of all the dead children mowed down in their own schools by homegrown, American made young, white domestic terrorists how sorry you are the Republicans refuse to even consider common sense gun reform.

Very few illegal immigrants commit violent crimes. Trump and his minions publicize every case they can find to stoke hate and racism. Sadly, that works on a lot of people.

We have a mental health crisis in this country that the proposed gun reform is not going to magically solve. And if you can call publicizing who the suspects in the brutal rapes of 12 and 13 year old girls are "racist", all I can is say that I feel extremely sorry for you.

Both issues need to be addressed IMO, but mental health isn't focused on as much as it should be.

People are right to be angered by these vile acts, of course, but it's often used by bad faith actors as an excuse to demonize all undocumented immigrants.

It's obviously important to secure the border in order to ensure people enter the country legally, but it's worth noting that not everyone who enters illegally has ill intent.

Instead of focusing on the symptom, the government must focus on the cause of illegal immigration if they really want to solve it. That starts with reforming our foreign policy.

Valid points, but we also have to remember that we're told on airplanes to put on our own masks first before assisting others for good reason.

I don't disagree, but as long as the government asserts itself militarily and economically in the affairs of other countries, they're going to continue displacing people.

Simply put, if we don't want immigrants seeking refuge here, we shouldn't be inserting ourselves over there.
