Clinton Blames Sanders for Trump’s ‘Crooked Hillary’ Attack

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is blaming Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for doing “lasting damage” to her campaign and “paving the way” for President Trump’s attack against her as “Crooked Hillary.”

According to excerpts of Clinton’s new campaign tell-all book, “What Happened,” Clinton claims that she wanted to fight back against Sanders’s characterization of her as beholden to corporate influence but that then-President Obama and others advised her to stay quiet.

“Throughout the primaries, every time I wanted to hit back against Bernie’s attacks, I was told to restrain myself,” Clinton writes. “Noting that his plans didn’t add up, that they would inevitably mean raising taxes on middle-class families, or that they were little more than a pipe-dream — all of this could be used to reinforce his argument that I wasn’t a true progressive. My team kept reminding me that we didn’t want to alienate Bernie’s supporters. President Obama urged me to grit my teeth and lay off Bernie as much as I could. I felt like I was in a straitjacket.”

Clinton ripped Sanders’s supporters — the so-called "Bernie Bros" — claiming that some of the attacks against her were “sexist” and arguing that Sanders’s attacks against her for raking in tens of millions of dollars for paid corporate speeches made it impossible for her to appeal to progressives during the general election campaign.

"Some of his supporters, the so-called Bernie Bros, took to harassing my supporters online,” Clinton writes. “It got ugly and more than a little sexist.
"When I finally challenged Bernie during a debate to name a single time I changed a position or a vote because of a financial contribution, he couldn't come up with anything," Clinton wrote. "Nonetheless, his attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump's 'Crooked Hillary' campaign."

The excerpts were posted online by a pro-Clinton Twitter account and first reported on by CNN.

In post-election interviews, Clinton has blamed her shocking loss on Russian interference, former FBI Director James Comey’s handling of the criminal investigation into her private email server and latent sexism.

She has been criticized for refusing to take responsibility for her campaign’s shortcomings.

Clinton’s latest explanation for why she lost — blaming Sanders and his supporters — will reopen old wounds from the bitter primary between the two.

Sanders’s enthusiastic base of supporters has long felt that establishment Democrats, led by the Democratic National Committee, conspired against them to give Clinton the nomination. They say they’ve been treated as interlopers by Democrats, who didn’t take them into the fold and so failed to capitalize on their grass-roots energy.

According to the latest Harvard-Harris Poll survey, Sanders is the most popular active politician in the nation, at 54 percent favorable and 36 percent unfavorable. Clinton’s favorability has not improved in her time out of the spotlight. She remains underwater at 42 percent positive and 53 percent negative.

What's interesting to me is that Clinton referred to Bernie's positions as a "pipe dream" after she lost the general election. The reason I find that interesting is that she had adopted some of those positions at the Democratic Convention. I had my doubts that she would follow through since it was so far removed from her usual brand of moderate corporatism. This just reinforces my belief that she would have been business as usual.

And as per usual, she's laying blame on someone else. She always acts like she's the victim of sexism, despite using the sexist term "Bernie bros" in regards to Bernie supporters. First off, not every Bernie supporter is a "bro." Secondly, I've seen Clinton supporters rip Bernie supporters to shreds on various Internet sites. The difference is I've never linked it to sexism. Like Clinton, her fanbase's grievances seem to be that Bernie told the truth about her policy record and ties to Wall Street, and that he didn't drop out of the race before the convention. Never mind that Clinton also refused to drop out before the convention while running against Obama.

I've taken a lot of guff for continuing to talk about Hillary, but she's the one trying to make herself relevant now. If she thinks attacking the most popular politician in the country and his supporters is somehow going to bring her popularity up, she's got another thing coming. "White privilege" is a term used far too loosely these days, but it most definitely applies to people like Hillary Clinton. Here's a woman who's been first lady, senator, Secretary of State, and won the presidential popular vote by three million votes, yet she always acts like the victim of sexists. Or worse, people who dare expose her neoliberal record and ties to Wall Street. Woe is Hillary.

And for someone who didn't want to "alienate" Bernie supporters, I don't think saying they all have dead end jobs and live in their parents basement really helped any.

Your opinion of Hillary is essentially correct. That's not why you taken some guff here -- but you've injected her name, and slams for her, into the most inappropriate places, out of context, and a bit bizarrely.

I've owned up to some of that, although I dispute that my Hillary criticisms were out of context as often as I was told they were. Sometimes it was a stretch, but other times I felt there was a valid comparison to be made.

But I've admitted before to having my bitterness influence a number of my posts. The only reason I mentioned the guff I've received is because I was told Hillary is no longer relevant, yet here she is trying to make herself relevant. I haven't mentioned her much at all lately, as I said I would try to widen the scope of my posts. But when she says something like this, she makes herself a relevant talking point once again.

No one's blamed you for mentioning her on this thread. It's about her and her comments, so context isn't a problem.

As more excerpts from Hillary's book are released, she comes across a bit schizophrenic. First she claims that she was restrained from attacking Bernie's "pipe dream" positions. She admits he pointed out the differences between their policies in order to show that she's not a true progressive. She even mentions him pointing out her paid speeches. While this is indeed what Bernie did, she's basically upset with him for telling the truth.

She also leaves out the fact that she adopted some of those positions at the convention. But what's really interesting is there's another excerpt where she claims she and Bernie had similar policies. She said "Because we agreed on so much, Bernie couldn't make an argument against me in this area on policy, so he had to resort to innuendo and impugning my character." Now she's just making stuff up. She was correct the first time when she said Bernie went after her on policy and her paid speeches as a means to undermine her alleged progressive credentials. But they agreed on very little, and his criticisms of her were kept in the realm of policy.

She also claims Bernie couldn't point to a single time she changed her vote due to a financial contribution. However, Elizabeth Warren said in a 2004 interview that Hillary flip-flopped on a bankruptcy bill after being influenced by the financial services industry. She also supported the bailout of Wall Street. Regardless, Hillary and establishment Democrats continue making these disingenuous attacks against Bernie and progressives.

The funny thing is that Bernie ultimately ended up campaigning for her, but the corporatists still won't lay off of him. It's as if they hate him simply for running against her in the first place.

And as for Bernie being responsible for Trump calling her "crooked Hillary," has she also forgot that he called Sanders "Crazy Bernie?" Trump called all of his opponents dumb names because he's a man child.

I didn't realize Obama hit Hillary so hard over NAFTA and taking money from lobbyists. I wish that reflected his Presidency, as opposed to the guy who supported the TPP and took money from the healthcare industry.

Bernie was attacked simply for criticizing Hillary on policy, even though Obama went after her harder. Was Obama called a sexist for his criticisms? Were his supporters called "Barack bros?" If so, I must have missed it.

SJW's reliance on identity politics is poison. Criticize a white man on policy, and it's politics. Criticize a woman on policy, and it's sexism. Criticize a black woman like Kamala Harris on policy, and it's racism and sexism.

Bernie was just on Stephen Colbert's show a few minutes ago and was extremely delicate, as I expected. He wouldn't take the bait, even to rightly defend himself. He simply said "we need to move forward and not re-fight 2016" and that we need Hillary Clinton do help achieve our goals, etc...

I love how Hillary starts off with "No matter how bold and progressive my policy proposals were..." Um, like saying single payer would never come to pass, not supporting a $15 an hour minimum wage, referring to free college as pie in the sky, calling the TPP "the gold standard," and supporting a hawkish foreign policy? Who is she trying to kid with this blatant revisionism? And to top it off, she said Bernie stole her ideas and took them to extremes. Like Bernie said in the video, "Does anybody really believe that?" Does she really expect the people who followed the primaries to believe that, or is she just so insincere that she can't keep from lying?

Here's a video of talking heads on CNN agreeing with Hillary. Apparently, you're not supposed to distinguish your policies from your opponent's in a primary, nor are you supposed to bring up their paid speeches to banks.

It's interesting to see how Hillary and Bernie each handled their losses. Bernie could have been rightly pissed at the DNC for rigging the primaries. He could have campaigned against Hillary for being to his right. Instead, he campaigned for Hillary and went on a unity tour with DNC chair Tom Perez. He also helped push Hillary to the left by staying in the race until the convention. Despite a bitter primary, Bernie has done nothing but bust his ass for the Democratic Party. He supports a progressive agenda that benefits the poor and working classes, rather than just wealthy elites. And how do the Democrats repay him? By shitting on him every chance they get.

I honestly don't think Hillary cares one way or the other about policy. It's always been about political expediency for her. Since loosing to Trump, she's spent her time playing the victim and looking for scapegoats.

Well, certainly Hillary did.
As have establishment political consultants and media personalities like Joy Reid, Joan Walsh, Neera Tanden, etc. There are also many Democratic politicians who remain dismissive of his positions. I'm talking about those who refer to the party as a "big tent," but only welcome those with a corporatist and militaristic point of view. Even the unity tour was bogus. Bernie was there as a prop, but Perez wouldn't back any of his ideas.
