Every 4 years, we get the worst choices. It can't be by accident.

Kamala Harris appeared in the cold open sketch on Saturday (and 2016 VP nominee Tim Kaine did, too).

I was watching live (or as close to "live" as I qualify as being today) and I wondered about the FCC "equal time" rule, a presidential election only hours away, with no representation of the other side ... Turns out it was indeed an apparent violation of that rule. Producer Lorne Michaels said weeks ago that he was aware of the rule and would not violate it, and yet the show did, in a possible better-to-ask-for-forgiveness-than-permission strategy.

That said, I thought the cameos, though fawningly inappropriate and I didn't like it, mostly worked... It was a weird episode -- it had a really strange, hypnotic vibe: comedically competent (and host John Mulaney is always pretty funny) but I recall thinking, "We have now entered into a different era," and I'm honestly not sure what I meant by that.

Kamala's cameo, alongside "Kamala":

Completely unrelated to the campaign, but odd:

My fear is that Trump may get the popular vote according to exit polling, but Kamala will be named the winner, and the schism between the two tallies will be pronounced enough that a huge blow up might result, with each side claiming victory.

That's actually what happened in 2004, but in reverse in terms of party: the Democrats fought the roll-out of the electronic voting machines (because they couldn't be audited or leave a paper trail) and the Republicans wanted them. As a result, there was the greatest discrepancy in history between the exit polls and the "official" popular vote -- but only in the states with those electronic voting machines, always favoring Dubya -- while the exit polls, usually favored John Kerry, the Democrat. (Even the Diebold voting machine creator said publicly that he would help the Dubya campaign any way he could. And the final vote came down to Ohio, the home of Diebold).

The quasi-liberal media gasped that night -- and then never mentioned it again.

So Dubya stole both elections and served two terms.

I'm not a Trump fan and have never voted for him. And, yes, the man is full of hot air... But if there's a problem at the polls, and a schism between the exit polls and the final count, the media will be loath to report the ugly implication (as they were even when a Democrat was robbed, as in 2004) and will only focus on Trump's indignant reaction to it; and they'll call it "conspiracy theories" (which may not be entirely theories).

If so, what a mess.

The establishment -- the deep state -- doesn't want Trump because he's a live wire and gives away the game too easily (although he almost always gives them what they want in the end). While Kamala is more compliant (while verbalizing concerns for the working class she doesn't feel at all, to help shmooze the public, as most of the Dems do nowadays). And that deep state has so many ways to undermine the elections.

Either way, we're screwed. Again. The only question this time is how volatile the public's reaction will be.

I think Kamala will win comfortably and the result will be apparent within 24 hours, not the drawn out process everyone went through last time. People have recently been getting excited about Iowa but I think they should be more excited about Florida because I think she might even win that state.

Which is why I went against both of them (Libertarian), like I did in 2016 (when Trump first came on the scene to possibly be President), and should have done in 2020.

It's been hard to predict the outcome of presidential elections lately, but I'll take a shot at it. I'm guessing it will be like 2016, with Harris winning the popular vote and Trump squeaking out a victory as a result of the electoral college. Whatever the outcome, it will no doubt divide the country because these elections have become so polarizing. I despise both mainstream candidates, so the outcome isn't going to affect me either way. As George Carlin said, we only have the illusion of choice. Garbage in, garbage out.

I used to be a loyal Democrat voter until I realized the con game they were playing. They use progressive issues as campaign fodder, and then never deliver on them.

I don't believe voting for Trump is a solution, as he's also loyal to Netanyahu and supports policies that favor the super-rich.

These days, I go with my conscience. For me, that means voting for a third party or not at all. That's why it pleases me whenever other people buck the two-party system.

There's a lot to dislike about Trump, but some of his critics do themselves no favors by playing dirty like this.

I'm sure Michaels knows they'll get a slap on the wrist at worst, if they even get that. I wouldn't be surprised if a stern talking to by the FCC commissioner is the extent of it.

I would have voted third-party/Jill-Stein, but I was too lazy.

Instead, I'm just sitting at home munching on a bag of something with probably too many carbs, waiting for death.

Which, all in all, is not bad way to spend an evening.

And the numbers can't be trusted anyway. The integrity of many elections has been compromised many times, and today there are so many ways to skew the numbers

When JFK ran against Nixon in 1960, the result was the slimmest in history. There have always been rumors -- and assumptions -- that mob votes were stolen (mostly in Illinois and West Virginia) on behalf of JFK, but what's lesser-known (because he ostensibly lost and because he didn't get assassinated --- overtly) is that Nixon also had mob-stolen votes in Louisiana and east Texas. So we'll never know what the actual tally from 1960 really was. (Or who stole the most).

And today, the technology just makes it even easier to play games with the end result.

So Trump may have reason to be paranoid, but it's hard to feel sorry for him. Because whether he has the election stolen from him or loses legitimately, he'll just say the same thing.

There's a lot to dislike about Trump, but some of his critics do themselves no favors by playing dirty like this

Oh, yeah. They're as bad as he is -- maybe worse in certain ways, if such a thing is possible.

I'm sure Michaels knows they'll get a slap on the wrist at worst, if they even get that. I wouldn't be surprised if a stern talking to by the FCC commissioner is the extent of it.

Especially if the Dems stay in.

Go and vote!
It's not too late until they close the voting place. Even if a vote for Jill Stein won't have the same impact as one for any of the major party candidates it's still a way of showing that you don't like either of the major candidates and would prefer another option.

Beautifully said and can be applied to all forms of politics around the world. Political parties has always been about division because regardless if a party is out...the other side is in.

What concerns me regarding the outcome of this election is if Harris wins the conflicts outside of America will escalate. Does anyone here honestly believe the likes of Putin, Netanyahu or Jinping is going to take any notice of Harris? Speak the truth because while the rest of the world blows up Harris will be tossing her words into this...

I think I know who is going to win but these elections are getting harder and harder to predict in the past decade. What really concerns me the most, no matter who wins, is the fallout. This country is so divided right now that I do worry about how certain individuals, or even groups, on either side will react. Years ago I had no worries about walking down the street the next morning after an election but now I do have that thought in the back of my mind.

And you're right to have it-- way back 48 years ago, Ford/Carter, once the election was done and dusted, life very much got back to normal; I hate that we can't have that now (or that the commentators can't talk straight up about it, as here from CBS at that time)...

Funny how that video begins with Cronkite talking about the polls closing in Kentucky and Indiana because as I’m watching that here we are 48 years later and on my TV right now they’re virtually saying the same thing as I’m listening.

Did not know they were still saying that now.

Professor Alan Lichtman (who's usually correct) has been predicting for weeks that Harris will win.

Michael Moore (who's usually correct) has been predicting Trump will win.

But Lichtman seems happy about his own prediction, while Moore seems unhappy about his.

Who is the more objective?

News flash: Trump is going to win.

Obama didn't want Kamala to be the nominee because he knew she couldn't win.
Yes, Trump is currently just 3 electoral votes away from securing the win. He's currently winning the popular vote by over 5 million votes as well, which I didn't expect.

I'm sure this will convince certain people that America is a racist and sexist country. Dems and their supporters always learn the wrong lessons. The fact is most Americans don't want to return to the George W. Bush era. Harris bragged about being endorsed by neocons and did campaign events with Liz Cheney, while progressives were told once again to kick rocks. Why do Dems continue to believe that's a winning strategy? The only reason Biden won in 2020 was because of Trump's mishandling of Covid, but we're in a new era of increasing economic hardships, escalating wars, and a border crisis. Not surprisingly, Harris was unable to convince people that she would solve these problems.

I'm sure some people are convinced that a Trump victory is the outcome I was hoping for. However, the real reason I'm so critical of Democrats is because I saw this coming. If the Dems returned to their anti-war roots and renewed their commitment to helping the poor and the working class, they would likely be winning decisively right new. Sadly, they became a party of wealthy elites and the military industrial complex. How anybody can still believe that the Dems haven't become completely corrupted is beyond me.

Of course, Trump is just as terrible when it comes to serving Israel and wealthy elites. The problem is Dems failed so bad that many people simply voted against them.
