It's about the crew of a spaceship named Nostromo in a distant future. They stop at a planet on their way back to earth and find a spaceship that has crashed. While three of them goes to look at the ship a creature gets stuck on one of the crew members faces. They bring the crew member back on board and after a while a creature is hatched from their collegues dead body. Okay up next is another one of my favorite actors:

tumblr_lxuuxcTdkE1qcs4zto1_1280.jpg

Richard Burton was a Welsh actor who was born on 10th November, 1925 in Pontrhydyfen, Wales. He was the second youngest of 13 siblings. His father was a coal miner and his mother died when Richard was two years old after having given birth to his younger brother Graham. Richard then moved to his oldest sister Cecilia and her husband Elfed in Taibach, Port Talbot. The couple raised him together with their two daughters.

His given name was Richard Walter Jenkins. But he changed his surname to Burton in 1943 to honor his mentor Philip Burton who taught him how to speak English without a Welsh accent. Richard studied at Exeter College in Oxford. He studied on a scholarship offered by the RAF and he served with them for three years.

In 1948 Richard Burton moved to London and started his acting career in the West End where he gained a reputation of being a Shakespearean actor. In 1949 he did his first feature film which was “The Last Days of Dolwyn”. It lead to that he was discovered and was given a movie contract with Alexander Korda. Eventually Hollywood became interested in the young actor and he was given the lead role in “My Cousin Rachel” (1952) where he starred opposite Olivia de Havilland. He kept working steadily in films and on the stage for most of the 1950s. He was a celebrated actor in his own right but after he married Elizabeth Taylor he was catapulted to even greater levels of fame. In the 1960s and 1970s The Burtons collaborated on 11 movies.

Richard Burton’s life was cut short on 5th August, 1984. He died from a brain haemorrhage in Celigny, Switzerland. He was 58 years old. Richard Burton won the BAFTA award, Golden Globe and the Tony Award as best actor. He was also nominated for several Oscars without ever winning the award. In his career he made approx 60 movies in total. But which one of his movies is your favorite?

Totals on: Friday.

Here´s Da Pig in a photo from the audition
she did for "Cleopatra". She and another British
actress (...) were finalists for it, but as we all know,
the role went to the (equally) fabulous Elizabeth Taylor.
In her memoir, Da Pig explains that she also had an
affair with Burton, but "Dickie always wanted more
of everything and hey, Liz had a nose longer than mine!"

Okay this is not easy for me since I love most of his movies but let's give it a try:

1. Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)
Richard should have won an Oscar for this part and maybe he would have if it hadn't been John Wayne's turn.
Anyway he plays Henry VIII to a T and makes him look sort of mad and passioante all at once. I love historical dramas and have always been fascinated by the British Royal Family for some reason.

2. The Taming of the Shrew (1967)
Richard at his Shakespeare best and I love it how he and Elizabeth plays off each other. They are a delight to watch and funny too!

3. The Night of the Iguana (1964)
Excellent movie and he plays the tortured priest so well. Love the location too!

4. Cleopatra (1963)
The only reason this is not number one on my list is because Richard barely had anything to do in the first half of the movie...
But I love, love, love this movie. By far my most favorite of both Richard and Elizabeth's movies...

5. The Sandpiper (1965)
My guilty pleasure movie that I can just watch over and over again. The scenery is really beautiful and I think the movie says something about women's roles in the 1960s. I love how Elizabeth's character defies the norms of what is expected of her. Then at the end of the day realize she does want "the marriage trap"...

6. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966)
This is the movie that turned me into a Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor fan. It's so fascinating to watch. I hadn't seen any other movie like it when I first saw it. Their performance is awesome too. I love how you don't know the whole story but are kept guessing as the movie unfolds.

7. The Longest Day (1962)

The best war film about the Second World War. Richard's role is rather small. But the movie seems so realistic. It's a must see.

8. Where Eagles Dares (1968)
Great action movie. I love it and it's awesome how Richard had credit above Clint Eastwood!

9. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965)
I haven't watched this one in a long good while, but I remember I thought it was really good. It's about the cold war.

10. Massacre On Rome (1973)
A chilling movie based on a true events from the Second World War. Horrible, but worth watching.

Movies that are just below my list:

Becket
Look Back In Anger
The Robe
Alexander The Great
Equus
Doctor Faustus
Sea Wife
Brief Encounter
The Comedians
The Desert Rats

Seems like I could easily have made this one a top twenty... ;)
