Emmerdale Teacher/Pupil Relationships

A teacher getting off with a pupil in 1997!

And to think that only last year, viewers branded such happenings in Emmerdale as "SICK"!

It's amazing what short memories many viewers seem to have, and how much their tolerance levels have gone down in 23 years...

It is sick if the teacher is much older. Old enough to be the parent, like in Jacob & Maya's case. She dated his father while cheating with his son on top of being Jacob's teacher. Yucky on so many levels!!!!

If there is a tiny age difference, then it's not as bad. But wait until you're no longer pupil & teacher for heaven's sake!! Preferably many months. The younger one must at the very least have turned 18, while his or her ex-teacher shouldn't be much older. 3-4 years tops.

Being 36 and a teacher in upper secondary school, I seriously cannot understand what a teacher can see in a much younger pupil. It's perverted - they still look like kids!

It does happen in real life though, and as soaps like Emmerdale are supposed to reflect real life, they have every right to cover such issues.

Everything gets slated nowadays in Emmerdale... and Coronation Street... But if these soaps "only" showed people sitting around, drinking tea, smelling the roses and talking about how great life is... That would be so dull that no-one would watch!

And they should. To disgust viewers and create a debate.

I am not aware of any teacher-pupil case in Sweden, thank goodness. It would be on the news for sure, and I bet the teacher would get fired. However, I'm not naïve. Such a thing has probably happened - just not become public knowledge.

Imagine if Ofcom had been around in 1973... Rape & murder, tramps falling out of top floor windows, adultery, public flogging... All happened when Emmerdale was less than a year old.

Imagine if leading politicians thought that what you hear and see will trigger you to do the same. We'd have boring series, boring books - all things boring.

Hollyoaks had the Becca and Justin romance. They are repeating episodes from that next weeks. Their baby is currently getting sucked into drug-dealing More recently, they had the Neeta and Hunter story. Of course, both teachers ended up getting murdered. One stabbed in prison and the other being dropped from a great height by her fiancé.

It's not that amazing that people don't carry twenty-three years worth of storylines around in their heads.

I was referring to the ones who have said they watched in the 1990s, and claim that nothing like what happens today happened back then.

Well it clearly did.

Probably the same people who watched Coronation Street in the 1980s & 1990s, and only recently think that domestic abuse is a new thing in the programme.

I see. My bad.

Which people are these? People you know?

People on forums in general. The snowflake brigade. One rule for the 1990s, another for the 2010s. Quite interesting actually.

Have you spoken to them directly about it? What have they said?

About things that happen now(domestic abuse, teachers getting off with pupils, suspicious deaths, extramarital affairs, etc.), didn't happen in the old days. Which is not true.

So what did they say when you pointed that out to them?

Some have even criticised a character and storyline in Emmerdale that hasn't even happened yet.

I remember when it was announced Peggy Mitchell was coming back to Walford to die, someone on an Enders fan forum started a thread: "50 Ways in Which Dominic Treadwell Collins Will Ruin Peggy's Death." I tend to stay away from soap spoilers and speculation and internet discussions about ongoing storylines because they tend to be overwhelmingly negative.

My point exactly! New people in soaps aren't given a fair chance to breathe these days by some people. And that's another point in that the producer's name always pops up in comments about soaps these days. I've read hundreds of letters concerning Emmerdale & Coronation Street in old issues of TV Times from the 80s, and very few, if any, mention the producer... Just the storylines and characters.

Do you ever consider not reading those comments?
