It does happen in real life though, and as soaps like Emmerdale are supposed to reflect real life, they have every right to cover such issues.
And to think that only last year, viewers branded such happenings in Emmerdale as "SICK"!
It's amazing what short memories many viewers seem to have, and how much their tolerance levels have gone down in 23 years...
It's not that amazing that people don't carry twenty-three years worth of storylines around in their heads.

I was referring to the ones who have said they watched in the 1990s, and claim that nothing like what happens today happened back then.
Probably the same people who watched Coronation Street in the 1980s & 1990s, and only recently think that domestic abuse is a new thing in the programme
I see. My bad.
Which people are these? People you know?
People on forums in general. The snowflake brigade. One rule for the 1990s, another for the 2010s. Quite interesting actually.
Have you spoken to them directly about it? What have they said?
About things that happen now(domestic abuse, teachers getting off with pupils, suspicious deaths, extramarital affairs, etc.), didn't happen in the old days. Which is not true.
So what did they say when you pointed that out to them?
Some have even criticised a character and storyline in Emmerdale that hasn't even happened yet.
I remember when it was announced Peggy Mitchell was coming back to Walford to die, someone on an Enders fan forum started a thread: "50 Ways in Which Dominic Treadwell Collins Will Ruin Peggy's Death." I tend to stay away from soap spoilers and speculation and internet discussions about ongoing storylines because they tend to be overwhelmingly negative.
New people in soaps aren't given a fair chance to breathe these days by some people. And that's another point in that the producer's name always pops up in comments about soaps these days.
