Is an analysis even needed? I thought it was stating the obvious to point out that celebrity culture is centered around narcissism.

If 2021 comes into play at all, it's that the disparity between the rich and the poor has never been more apparent. A fact that the media seems to love shoving in our face.

Masked servants serving unmasked elites is grotesque to me. The photographers are just doing their job, but why is a fundraiser for a museum being treated as a red carpet event in the first place? They could have just cut a check if that was the case. No, this was just an excuse for privileged celebrities to gather and show off their designer duds.

The show itself (or is it not a show?) looks like Ryan Murphy on acid.

This what happens when you give gay lap-dances to Satan.

There have always been shifts in celebrity culture. Did the Royals ever deserve it? Did the 1990s supermodels ever deserve it? Was there a need for the DJ celebrity status back in the 2010s or the footballers narcissism back in the 2000s?
Isn't the celebrity for the sake of celebrity hood The Ultimate Celebrity?

Perhaps the actor who makes a great movie isn't interesting enough anymore. After all, in 2021 it's "just" a movie (quotation marks to indicate that *I* don't agree with that).
A fact that the media seems to love shoving in our face.
Before this thread existed I hadn't seen any of it and it's very unlikely I would have discovered it by myself. So...aren't we...kinda..helping...a little bit here?
Isn't it happening because we allow it to happen just by reacting to it?
Isn't this unjustified celebrity news the red carpet equivalent of the evil spree/serial killer who also shouldn't be in the news, let alone getting his mini-series story on netflix?
Modern media creates the news and our reactions, good or bad, allows them to make that "news" bigger and bigger. It's a product and only you can decide if you're going to buy it or not.
Just being righteous about it isn't going to change things. If anything, it's what they want you to be.
Masked servants serving unmasked elites is grotesque to me
And also kinda funny, as in: so stupid it's funny.
The photographers are just doing their job
I think that's a big understatement. They are as much part of it as the celebrities prancing around in hilarious outfits. The actor from Schitt's Creek looks like butterfly!

It could have been a rodeo or a funfair or a sexy calendar or a special episode of that slimy TV show The Voice. Who cares where the money or attention comes from?

That's true. I just think people have become increasingly tired of the spectacle of celebrities and how insufferable they can be. Then you have politicians and their performative displays that don't actually accomplish anything. They could all use a strong dose of humility, but they enjoy their sense of superiority and exclusivity too much for that.

People have been righteous about many things that will never change. Activists get arrested for protesting wars, yet the wars continue unimpeded. People often express their disgust for things they don't like when those things are shoved in their face. The product is sold to us whether we want it or not. You don't have to go looking for it because it will find you, especially if you're on social media. Not commenting on it won't change that. News of the Met Gala was pervasive because the media heavily promoted it.
And also kinda funny, as in: so stupid it's funny.
I think that describes a large chunk of modern life in general.

Of course, but I was speaking in terms of your statement that the celebrities were following their instructions.
It could have been a rodeo or a funfair or a sexy calendar or a special episode of that slimy TV show The Voice. Who cares where the money or attention comes from?
Because they're being lauded for donating to a museum while making themselves the focal point. Consumers of celebrity culture don't give a damn about some museum.

Oh, yeah. It's different now. Something's changed. The public is much more impatient with this kind of stuff right now.

True, it found me here. I thought I was safe on tellytalk

It looks like you've tangled yourself up in a no-win situation, Frank.

If only TNT had shoved their new Dallas a little harder in our faces (or somewhere else) maybe it would still be here today.
Oh, yeah. It's different now. Something's changed
But what, and why?
Celebrities can't afford to stand still because social media is happening so fast. Two weeks later, and nobody remembers you anymore.
Is that why they constantly scream for more attention?

I wasn't surprised. It was a big celebrity news story, and this is the celebrity scuttlebutt forum.

Hmm, I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at there. TV shows either succeed or they don't, regardless of how heavily promoted they are. It's not the same as celebrity culture. That's something that has never gone away, and likely never will. Nobody's coming to "cancel" events like the Met Gala. It obviously appeals to some people, but I also think the media gets off on promoting such events because they want to be part of that exclusive club. The only thing us commoners can do is express our distaste for it.

The occasional talk show appearance should suffice, although most late night hosts are crap today. It's the pretentious showing off that people are becoming turned off by.

I suspect it's because the public has caught on to their virtue signaling, performative bullshit. In many ways, Trump exposed the [moderator edit] for who they really are. They pretend to care about injustices, yet they support the dregs of both the Democratic and Republican parties simply because of their shared hatred of Trump. George W. Bush went from being reviled to loved by the neoliberal class. These days, many celebrities are on social media openly expressing their hatred of the plebs who refuse to fall in line and support their beloved "resistance" heroes. I think people are simply tired of being lectured by a bunch of wealthy, smug, self-righteous hypocrites who act holier than thou.

Even progressive darling AOC has thrown her lot in with [moderator edit] She made headlines with her "tax the rich" dress at the Met Gala, but that's the point. AOC is clearly an attention seeker who does these performative stunts so people will keep talking about her. When it comes to putting in the effort to put these policies in place, AOC's quickly shown to be all talk and no action. Apparently, AOC's ticket to the Met Gala was comped by the museum itself. I doubt they'd have done that if she was legitimately coming after the wealthy's money. In another twist of irony, the dress AOC wore was designed by a woman whose dating the son of a billionaire. Best to take it with a grain of salt.

Now I'm no fan of Ben Shapiro, but this doctored image of AOC's dress he put up does seem more appropriate:

Note: Post edited by moderator to remove inflammatory and derogatory slang term.
For anybody wondering why a moderator edited my post, it's because I used a word deemed "controversial, derogatory, and inflammatory" to describe establishment liberals.

The word "neoliberal" fits just as well where it now says "[moderator edit]". Hopefully that will remain politically correct enough.
